Solo: A Star Wars Story, or simply Solo, is a 2018 American space Western film based on the Star Wars character Han Solo. Directed by Ron Howard, it was produced by Lucasfilm and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is the second Star Wars anthology film following 2016's Rogue One. The plot takes place over ten years prior to the events of A New Hope, and explores the early adventures of Han Solo and Chewbacca, as the pair are involved in a heist within the criminal underworld and meet a young Lando Calrissian. The film stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, alongside Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Joonas Suotamo, and Paul Bettany.
George Lucas began development on the film in 2012. He commissioned Lawrence Kasdan to write the screenplay, which was completed by his son Jonathan after Kasdan was hired to write Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Principal photography began in January 2017 at Pinewood Studios, under the direction of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The pair left the project in June 2017 after reportedly being fired over "creative differences" with Lucasfilm, and Howard took over directing duties. With an estimated production budget of around $275 million, it is one of the most expensive films ever made. Having grossed over $388 million worldwide, it is considered the first Star Wars film to be deemed a box office bomb, with estimated losses for Disney of up to $80 million; it will need to gross at least $500 million to break even.
The film had its world premiere in Los Angeles on May 10, 2018, and also screened on May 15 at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, before its United States release on May 25, 2018 in RealD 3D, IMAX and IMAX 3D. It received generally favorable reviews from critics, with praise for the cast (particularly Ehrenreich and Glover), visuals and action sequences, although many noted that the film added "nothing new" to the Star Wars franchise.

A Paris, Al Gore donne le coup d'envoi d'une émission de 24h sur le climat
L’ancien candidat à la présidentielle américaine et prix Nobel de la paix a lancé vendredi une émission de 24 heures à Paris. A deux semaines de la Cop21, Al Gore veut mobiliser autour de la question climatique.
Le groupe Duran Duran a donné le coup d’envoi du show vendredi soir dans un studio éphémère en forme de bulle, sous la tour Eiffel. Al Gore est aux manettes de cette émission mondiale, diffusée en direct sur le site de The Climate Reality Project, une organisation dont il est le président fondateur.
Pendant ces 24 heures, scientifiques, politiques et chanteurs se relaient pour interpeller sur les enjeux du climat, à quelques jours de la Conférence sur climat de Paris. "Cette émission vise à mettre la pression sur les dirigeants mondiaux pour qu'ils concluent un accord sur le climat le plus solide possible à la prochaine conférence de l'ONU à Paris, et aussi pour encourager chacun à agir dans sa propre communauté", expliquent les organisateurs.
Baptisée "24 heures de réalité et la Terre en direct: le monde regarde" (24 Hours of Reality and Live Earth: the World is Watching), l'émission se déroule en direct depuis Paris mais aussi depuis d'autres régions du monde: Etats-Unis, Chine, Australie, Philippines, Afrique du Sud, Canada, Kenya, Antarctique, Mexique, Malaisie, Inde et Bangladesh.
Dans le studio de la tour Eiffel, François Hollande sera reçu samedi, seul avec Al Gore, "pour un entretien exclusif". Vendredi soir, Ségolène Royal, la ministre de l’Écologie est déjà intervenue sur le plateau de l’émission et a plaidé pour un accord mondial en faveur du climat. "Il faut que les pays les plus pollueurs de la planète améliorent leur contribution, a déclaré Ségolène Royal (…) et que les pays riches tiennent leurs engagements".

Parmi les autres intervenants, les organisateurs ont annoncé le président mexicain Felipe Calderon, le Premier ministre du Québec, Philippe Couillard, le gouverneur de Californie Jerry Brown et l'ancien secrétaire général de l'ONU Kofi Annan. Ces 24 heures sont aussi animées par des concerts de plusieurs chanteurs. A l’affiche, Elton John, Pharrel Williams ou encore Neil Young, mais leurs concerts seront uniquement retransmis.
En 2007, Al Gore avait reçu le prix Nobel de la paix avec le Giec pour son engagement dans la lutte contre le dérèglement climatique. En 2006, il avait notamment réalisé Une vérité qui dérange, un documentaire sur les conséquences du dérèglement climatique, récompensé aux Oscars. Avec ce rendez-vous, l’ancien candidat à la présidence américaine souhaite de nouveau interpeller sur les enjeux climatiques.

L'ex-vice-président américain Al Gore, qui organisait vendredi et samedi au pied de la Tour Eiffel à Paris une émission mondiale de 24 heures sur le climat, diffusée sur internet, l'a interrompue en raison des attentats survenus en France, par "solidarité avec le peuple français".
"Nous interrompons notre émission en raison des tragédies qui se déroulent ici à Paris, en raison de l'état d'urgence mais surtout parce que nous voulons exprimer notre solidarité avec le peuple français et la ville de Paris", a-t-il déclaré.
"Nous voulons exprimer nos condoléances aux familles de ceux qui ont perdu la vie, ceux qui sont gravement blessés, ceux qui souffrent des conséquences de ces terribles attaques terroristes", a-t-il dit. "Nous sommes solidaires".
"Nous continuerons à parler des sujets de cette émission, la crise du climat et ses solutions", a-t-il ajouté.
Dans cette émission organisée depuis vendredi en début de soirée sur un plateau installé sous un dôme transparent au pied de la Tour Eiffel, Al Gore accueillait scientifiques, politiques et chanteurs pour tenter de mobiliser la planète sur les enjeux du climat, à deux semaines de la Conférence de l'ONU sur le climat organisée à Paris à partir du 30 novembre.
Plus d'une centaine de chefs d'Etats sont attendus à l'ouverture de cette Conférence.
François Hollande devait intervenir dans l'émission d'Al Gore, samedi en début d'après-midi.
Le programme devait être diffusé pendant 24 heures sur le site de The Climate Reality Project, organisation fondée et présidée par M. Gore.
La conférence de l'ONU sur le climat (COP21), du 30 novembre au 11 décembre, est censée d’aboutir à un accord mondial pour limiter le réchauffement climatique.

La 21e Conférence des Parties
Chaque année, depuis la signature de la Convention-Cadre des Nations Unies sur les Changements Climatiques en 1992, les 195 Etats signataires se réunissent pour définir ensemble des objectifs concrets de lutte contre les dérèglements climatiques. Aux côtés des représentants des Etats, les ONG, les collectivités territoriales, les syndicats, les entreprises et la communauté scientifique, participent aux débats.
Du 29 novembre au 11 décembre, Paris accueillait la 21e Conférence des Parties (COP21). Cette conférence est une échéance cruciale qui représente la fin d’un cycle de négociations, en s’inscrivant dans le prolongement direct de la grande COP de 1997, qui avait permis l’adoption du protocole de Kyoto.
La COP21 a établi les bases d’un nouvel accord international applicable à tous les pays. Il engagera l’ensemble des Nations dans une réduction globale des émissions de gaz à effet de serre (GES), dans l’objectif de maintenir le réchauffement mondial à 1.5°C.

François Hollande a évoqué les trois priorités après l’adoption du Programme de développement à l’horizon 2030 et en vue de la Conférence de Paris sur le climat en décembre. La première priorité est la préservation du climat, le Président français estimant qu’il faudrait signer un texte qui engagerait l’ensemble de la communauté internationale sur des décennies. Si notre planète subissait un réchauffement supérieur à 2°C, cela signifierait la disparition d’un certain nombre de pays, a prévenu le Président français, pour qui le caractère urgent de ce problème nécessitait des changements dans les modes de consommation et un financement approprié pour sa mise en œuvre. À son avis, 100 milliards de dollars seraient nécessaires pour assurer la transition énergétique et pour la lutte contre le réchauffement climatique. La deuxième priorité est la lutte contre la pauvreté, qui devra être menée avec le fonds de la transition énergétique. La troisième priorité concerne la mobilisation de ressources pour la réalisation des trois piliers du développement durable pour assurer que tous les peuples de la planète jouissent pleinement de leurs droits fondamentaux en toute égalité et dignité dans un monde pacifique.
Le Président a par ailleurs annoncé que la France avait décidé d’augmenter son aide publique au développement à partir de 2020, à 4 milliards d’euros. Il a aussi annoncé la réforme de l’APD française en conjonction avec l’Agence française du développement et la Caisse des dépôts, qui deviendrait ainsi la plus grande banque européenne pour le développement. Il a également évoqué la mise en place de la taxe sur les transactions financières à partir de 2017, dont une partie serait affectée à la lutte contre les inégalités et contre la pauvreté.

Le dérèglement climatique vu par Jean-Louis Etienne
En partenariat avec Universcience.tv, nous poursuivons la publication d’une série d’entretiens en vidéo sur le changement climatique, dans la perspective de la COP21, la conférence internationale qui se tiendra à Paris du 30 novembre au 11 décembre. Cette conférence tentera de parvenir à un accord contraignant sur la transition vers des économies sobres en carbone.
Dans cette vidéo, Jean-Louis Etienne, explorateur de l’Arctique et de l’Antarctique mais aussi médecin, voit le réchauffement climatique comme une maladie, une fièvre qui touche la planète et s’aggrave aux pôles. Il prescrit l’arrêt des énergies fossiles – tout particulièrement le charbon avec lequel les pays du Sud se développent – et se demande si l’homme saura stopper à temps son addiction à ces énergies.
Cet entretien a été réalisé à l’occasion de l’exposition temporaire « Climat, l’expo à 360 ° » qui vient d’ouvrir à la Cité des sciences et de l’industrie de Paris.

Chacun de nous se doit de répondre maintenant à la question : est-ce qu’il m’importe que l’aventure de l’humanité sur Terre puisse se poursuivre ? Est-ce que je suis prêt à modifier dès aujourd’hui mon mode de vie pour que nos enfants et leurs enfants puissent vivre dans des conditions supportables ?

Il est fondamental que les consciences des hommes et des femmes de cette planète s'expriment ensemble, quelques soient leurs conditions, leurs religions, leurs philosophies.
La campagne "Why do I care ?" invite chacun à témoigner, et à faire savoir autour de lui, pourquoi la lutte contre le réchauffement climatique est importante et nous concerne chacun.

Forty-eight artists have been invited to exhibit responses to IMAGING THE APPLE.
The exhibition is scheduled from March 25 to May 1, 2010 at AC Institute [Direct Chapel] 547 West 27th Street, 5th & 6th floors, New York. www.artcurrents.org
IMAGING THE APPLE is a development of a successful show that toured the Eastern states of Australia in 2004 . 2005. The original exhibition was organized by artist/curator John R. Neeson who is co-curating the New York version with Elizabeth Gower also a Melbourne based artist/curator.
The New York show includes Artists from Stockholm, Beijing, Pittsburg, New York, Toledo, Hollywood, Auckland, Plymouth, Melbourne and Sydney; and in the case of Billy Tjampijinpa Kenda from an area in Central Australia as geographically remote from New York City as it's possible to get.
The Artists represent a cross generational group, with established and well known Artists such as Yoko Ono and Billy Apple, exhibiting alongside mid-career and emerging Artists, using a diverse range of media including text, photography, installation, video, sound and painting.
The conceptual basis for IMAGING THE APPLE references Paul Cézanne's ambition to 'astound Paris with the painting of a single apple'.
The apple has been a significant and reoccurring emblem in factual stories, legends and myths throughout western history.
Never actually identified as the guilty 'fruit of temptation' in the Garden of Eden, an apple nevertheless has been universally represented as the culprit for twenty centuries.
The 'apple' features in the Judgment of Paris from Ancient Greece; in the various legends of William Tell and Snow White and the poison apple from central Europe, in Isaac Newton's revelation on gravity from England, in the origin of the Granny Smith apple from Australia, and from America, Johnny Apple seed.
There is also considerable mythology surrounding why New York City became known as the .big apple.. One story is, that in the jargon of US jazz musicians a gig was an .apple. and a gig in New York City, the big apple. A second tale. dating from the 19th Century concerns a high-class bordello, run by Eve, who had the best .apples. in town.
In colloquial Australian "she'll be apples" translates, as "it will be fine" while 'an Apple a day keeps the doctor away', 'an apple for the teacher' and 'the apple of my eye' are epithets common in the English-speaking world that associates the apple with health and goodness.
Finally 'apple' has become an enduring contemporary icon associated with the legendary Beatles company, the personal computers and ipod.
All these associations resonate in various degrees of intensity through the forty-eight responses in IMAGING THE APPLE.
IMAGING THE APPLE is accompanied by a catalogue, documenting the works, and including a project essay by John R.Neeson. It is published by AC Institute and distributed by Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
IMAGING THE APPLE has received a grant through the Dame Joan Sutherland Fund from the Australian American Association and in-kind sponsorship from Chapman & Bailey, an Australian based Art materials company.

The international popularity of the New Year's Concert gives the impression as if the Strauss reception of the ensemble went back to Johann Strauss I and thus seamlessly to the beginning of the history of the orchestra. In fact, the Philharmonic long ignored this "most Viennese" music that was ever written: Obviously the social advancement they experienced through their Philharmonic concerts them seemed threatened by relationships with the "popular music". This attitude towards the Strauss dynasty changed only gradually. Crucial for rethinking were besides the fact that the members of the unique composer family were enjoying the highest recognition of the great composers such as Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner and Johannes Brahms, several direct encounters with Johann Strauss II giving the orchestra the opportunity the importance of this music and the whole of Europe compelling personality of its creator to get to know.

The first meeting immediately brought a premiere: For the in the Great Hall of the Musikverein held Vienna Opera Ball on 22 April 1873 Strauss composed the waltz "Wiener Blut" and directed it "authentically" with the violin in his hand. On 4 November 1873 brought Strauss works of his father and Josef Lanner and the "Blue Danube Waltz" as part of a gala concert organized by the Chinese World Expo Commission to performance, the next meeting there was at the occasion of a soiree in the Court Opera (11 December 1877), in which Strauss the premiere of his "reminiscences of old and new Vienna" conducted, an unfortunately lost potpourri of topics from own or from compositions of his father. On 14 October 1894, the orchestra took part at the gala concert on the occasion of the fifty-year career anniversary of the master, and Strauss thanked with the presentation of a commemorative medal and a telegram: "For the nonce written warmest thanks to the great artists to the famous Philharmonic for both your masterly performance as well for the manifestation of Your sympathy which has given me great joy... Johann Strauss". The next encounter should have tragic consequences. On May 22, 1899, the composer had at the occasion of a performance of "Die Fledermaus" conducted for the first and only time in the Court Opera. By doing so, he got a cold subsequently leading to that pneumonia of which he died on 3 June in 1899.

Even after the death of the "King of Waltz" advanced the Philharmonic not immediately to his convinced interpreters. A turning point began to emerge in 1921: At the occasion of the unveiling of the Johann Strauss monument in Vienna's Stadtpark conducted Arthur Nikisch (1855-1922) the waltz "Artist's Life" "on the Beautiful Blue Danube" as well as "Wine, Women and Song", and the example of the world-famous artist apparently made ​​school. The final breakthrough brought the celebrations to mark the 100th birthday of the master (25 October 1925): Felix von Weingartner conducted the "Blue Danube Waltz" in the Philharmonic subscription concerts on 17-18 October and conducted on October 25 a concert, exclusively consisting of works of Strauss.

The real Strauss tradition of the Vienna Philharmonic but established that artist, to this day as perhaps the most important apologist of this music considered: Clemens Krauss (1893-1954). From 1929 to 1933 he conducted at the Salzburg Festival every year a Strauss program and thus anticipating the New Year's Concert.

The origin of this concert falls in the darkest period in the history of Austria and the orchestra. In the midst of barbarism, dictatorship and war, in a phase of constant trepidation for the lives of individual members or their relatives, the Philharmonic on 31 December 1939 put an ambivalent accent: The net income of one the Strauss dynasty dedicated extraordinary concert, conducted by Clemens Krauss, was entirely the Nazi fundraising campaign war winter charity (Kriegswinterhilfswerk) dedicated. In 1941 the Philharmonic Academy "Johann Strauss Concert" was organized on January 1, and in the midst of war by many people as "real Viennese festival of joy" understood but also by the Nazi propaganda in the "Greater German Broadcasting" captured. Clemens Krauss was in charge of the newly created institution until the war ended. During the years 1946 and 1947 was Josef Krips (1902-1974) at the conductor's stand, in 1948 returned Krauss after lifting his two-year Dirigierverbotes (prohibition to conduct an orchestra) by the Allies and headed until 1954 seven other New Year's concerts.

The unexpected death of Krauss on 16 May 1954 created for the Philharmonic major problems in terms of a successor, and it took several orchestra meetings before just before 1 January 1955 it was decided to entrust with the artistic leadership the concertmaster Willi Boskovsky (1909-1991). The choice proved to be a stroke of luck: Twenty-five times, from 1955 to 1979, Boskovsky conducted this concert and formed it so sustainably that his resignation marked the end of an era - in his camp was that old Austria that outside nostalgic dreams only exists in the magic of Strauss music.

As Boskovsky in October 1979 had to cancel for health reasons for the New Year's concert in 1980, the Philharmonic took again a fundamental decision: with Lorin Maazel an internationally acknowledged conductor he was elected, who directed the concert until 1986.
After that it was decided the the artistic director had to be changed every year. The first was in 1987 Herbert von Karajan with an unforgettable concert, followed him Claudio Abbado (1988 and 1991), Carlos Kleiber (1989 and 1992), Zubin Mehta (1990, 1995, 1998 , 2007), Riccardo Muti (1993, 1997, 2000 , 2004), Lorin Maazel (1994, 1996, 1999 , 2005), Nikolaus Harnoncourt (2001, 2003), Seiji Ozawa (2002), Mariss Jansons (2006, 2012), Georges Prêtre ( 2008, 2010 ), Daniel Barenboim (2009, 2014) and Franz Welser- Möst (2011, 2013). "Todo el humo que afectaba directamente a Rosario está absolutamente controlado", aseguró este mediodÃa el director de Protección Civil de la provincia, Gabriel Gasparutti, respecto a los focos de incendio que estaban activos frente a las costas de Rosario y que generaban gran cantidad de combustión y tornaban nocivo e irrespirable el aire en Rosario y el resto de las ciudades costeras.
El funcionario se refirió a los focos ubicados hacia el sector norte de la conexión vial Rosario-Victoria, a la altura de Capitán Bermúdez, donde 65 brigadistas vienen trabajando de manera intensa junto a la colaboración de los tres aviones hidrantes para combatir las llamas y poder sofocar los incendios en las islas.
De hecho, esas tareas perjudicaron la salud de los brigadistas, a tal punto que uno de ellos, Mario Flores (40 años) tuvo que ser rescatado en helicóptero y trasladado hacia el Hospital de Emergencias Clemente Alvarez (Heca) el pasado martes por una descompensación por principio de asfixia.
"Todo el humo que afectada directamente a Rosario está absolutamente controlado", le confirmó Gasparutti a La Capital luego de sobrevolar este mediodÃa toda la zona lindera a la conexión vial hacia la ciudad entrerriana, donde estaban los focos más rebeldes.
En ese sentido, Gasparutti precisó que esos focos estaban controlados desde ayer a las cinco de la tarde, pero admitió que la lluvia -cayeron 12 milÃmetros- les dio la mano que necesitaban para "enfriar el terreno, ya que la tierra se mantiene caliente". Sin embargo, el directivo provincial dijo que a la altura de Alvear aún hay "cuatro focos importantes que están activos", por eso ya pusieron en macha otro operativo para sofocar esos incendios isleños que aún se mantienen pese a las lluvias. Gasparutti resaltó, por otra parte, que personal de Prefectura Naval controlará la zona para evitar que se produzcan nuevos incendios en las islas.
Por su parte, el titular de la secretarÃa de Articulación Federal de la Seguridad, Gabriel Fuks, expresó a través de las redes sociales su satisfacción por el trabajo realizado. "Luego de seis dÃas de trabajo intenso de las y los brigadistas, más las lluvias, logramos, junto a Entre RÃos y Santa Fe, minimizar los focos Ãgneos. Ahora es necesaria la acción de la Justicia y la toma de decisiones polÃticas de fondo para frenar estas quemas", celebró.

Chapter 8-The Jaws of the Jungle

Because American soldier-of-fortune Richard Grant is falsely accused in the murder of an Indian nobleman, he disguises himself as an Arab goes to sub Saharan Africa in search of a valuable diamond field. Along the way he meets beautiful Muriel Armitage and searches for her missing brother, Tom, supposedly murdered by the seductive femme fatale Mrs. LaSalle, who's murdered herself. An ocean liner carrying all the principals and the villainous big game hunter Harris catches fire and founders although his cargo of deadly big cats escape to the mainland. Harris is aided by Mustapha, his sinister Arab accomplice and Bimi the Ape Man, a ghastly missing link who obeys his evil master's every command.

Set in India, Arabia, and Darkest Africa, this 12-chapter Mascot Pictures serial had been created for Harry Carey and Edwina Booth, the stars of MGM's highly anticipated Trader Horn (1930). That film, however, needed quite a bit of re-tooling and producer Nat Levine had to settle for lesser names Walter Miller and Nora Lane. A top serial leading man of the 1920s, Miller played a soldier of fortune, falsely accused of murder, who tracks the real killer to the jungles of Africa. Once there, he aligns himself with a young girl (Lane), whose brother (Carroll Nye) has stumbled on a secret diamond mine. Boris Karloff, in his fourth and last serial for Mascot, played one of the villain's henchmen. In the serial's second chapter, "Man-Eaters," the future Frankenstein monster flings poor Carroll Nye into a pit containing -- of all things -- the first and only African tiger. The redoubtable Nye survives not only this surprising encounter, but is also confronted with a bizarre half-man, half-beast creature named Bimi and played by Cyril McLaglen, brother of Victor. Containing one of the more eclectic casts in any serial, King of the Wild also featured the delightful Mischa Auer as an escaped lunatic, Laurel and Hardy regular Dorothy Christy as a society dame, veteran action star Tom Santschi as the killer, and real-life explorer/actor Albert DeWinton. In a case of life imitating art, DeWinton disappeared and apparently perished during an expedition to the Amazon River shortly after finishing this serial. King of the Wild was filmed at Yuma, AZ, and Bronson Caverns (the future "Bat-Cave") in Los Angeles' Griffith Park. A seven-reel feature version was released under the title Bimi.
