fresh new 70s dining table, $50, care of Craigslist Swedes

Otherwise known as the dining room table and design studio, this multifaceted area also works as a home recording studio.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN - This is a great vintage teak dining table with slightly splayed pencil-shaped legs. We sanded all the wood down to the grain and oiled it, so that its natural beauty shines through. The new top of clean white laminate makes it fresh and inviting. Do a high-low by pairing this with a few chrome Bertoia chairs ;-D

The family and friends are missing!

oh isabel. please, for the love of god, give up your newfound passion for the outside world. stamp out the rekindled fire of five-year-old adventures.

i promise i will try to make sure the door is always closed, but i worry that if you do get out, you'll lose your way like you did five years ago, when you left your first home and wended your way to us.

please. keep napping in the chair right behind me, and put out of your head all thoughts of the hole under the shed.

but when you rook a running jump and literally leapt out the front door yesterday, i knew we might not have you for long. maybe the woods are calling you, even though they starved you half to death. just know this: you'll always have a place here, with food, warmth, shelter, love, and as many fleece blankets as your little body wants.

xoxo

TABLE:

80 in. x 50 in., Oak Eastern Dining Table, tabletop created from 1.5 in. thick hardwood, Add three 12 in. leaves, No drop legs, Standard rectangular Tabletop, Standard square edge, No fluting.

EIGHT CHAIRS:

8 Custom Oak Chairs without Arms, Eastern top (everything above the seat) with Railroad Bottom (the seat and everything below it), Standard wooden seats, No fluting.

WOOD FINISH: Blackened Oak

The color of the table is a rich dark brown. I achieved it by using brown dye and Sherwin William's black walnut BAC wiping stain. The color covered the green poplar quite well and is a pleasing color.

It is possible to still see the texture of the wood even in the photos if you click on a larger image of it.

I was asked what color it was. I replied "Java!"

The table top is real wood, and I couldn't get the rich tones to come out in the photo. The bad news about wood - is that it is easy to damage, hot cups, dropped plates, and nail varnish have all done their bit - but thats a part of it it's history now, so I guess like the blemishes and all - LoL.

I thought the darn pic was out of focus, but it's the grain - it doesn't have sharp edges !!

This table is made of stainless steel but I'm sure a plan could be created to make it out of wood.

The two legs are connected by means of a board that runs centrally, leaving ample legroom

You can see the beautiful slab of elmwood, and the evenly counter-matched frames of the sewing machine legs. Hand-made, and imperfect, and ready for many perfect parties to come.

This table gets rotated in while tables are taken to be refinished.

It is constructed of poplar and took about 10 hours to completely build. I did not spend time on mortise and tenon. I used pocket hole screws to join the aprons to the legs and also added corner braces.

This will be interesting to see how the joinery holds up in a commercial use area. I slammed this table out as fast as I could with materials in the shop.

I did add adjustable feet on the bottom for about $5.

Poplar wood is soft so it is already taking a beating on the surface, but the finish is holding up quite well. I used ML Campbell's MagnaMax satin and Sherwin Williams BAC wiping stain and brown aniline dye to get the deep color. It achieved a rich dark brown and covered up the green tones inherent of poplar wood.

Cosmonaut crews sat around and above this table to eat and work. Compartments contained different types of food, and heaters to warm them. In the centre there is a powerful vacuum pump to prevent crumbs from floating away and clogging vital systems.
