Through a €2.15 million project funded primarily by the European Union, UNICEF has constructed a water well and installed solar panels to operate desalination plants at two clinics in the Gaza strip. The use of solar energy allows for a reliable source of power despite daily electricity outages throughout the Gaza Strip. It also provides contingency power in the event of airstrikes and escalations of conflict. When violence erupts, the clinics provide care for conflict-related trauma and injuries. Otherwise, the injured would have to be referred to hospitals.

For Badam-Ochir and his wife Bolortuya, who make a living from herding goat and sheep in eastern Mongolia, knowing the weather forecast is a matter of survival. In the winter, the temperatures here can drop to minus 40 degrees – an extreme climate for which one needs to plan ahead, for their own family but also for their herd, which often roams far away in the steppe, and which they therefore need to bring back close when the weather threatens. Thanks to a disaster preparedness project funded by the EU, they now have the necessary information at their fingertips via an SMS service which provides them with a bi-weekly localised weather forecast, as well as information on snow depth and pasture degradation, helping them better manage their herd. “We are nomads, we change locations at least four times a year, explains Badam-Ochir. This service is extremely useful as it is accessible anywhere, anytime. We take real time decisions thanks to this”. Overall, the project will reach 6700 herders in Mongolia.

Daniel Hobohm, Head of Product Lifecycle Management, Siemens AG, delivers a presentation at the ITF Open Stage Café event: "Stream–digitalisation of the road and the beginning of Vehicle2Infrastructure", Presented by the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG), taking place during the International Transport Forum’s 2016 Summit on “Green and Inclusive Transport” in Leipzig, Germany on 19 May 2016.
Until recently, the climatic phenomenon known as dzud – characterised by a very harsh winter and other conditions which limit access to forage for animals in the Mongolian steppe - occurred once or twice in a decade. Today, climatic changes and human induced environmental degradation have intensified the frequency and intensity of the dzud, which results in the death of millions of livestock – from starvation. As part of a disaster preparedness project aimed at building up the resilience of Mongolian herders, the EU’s partner People in Need (PIN) has created an SMS service in order for them to access the weather forecast and data on pasture degradation, thereby providing them with a crucial tool to take precautionary measures and better manage their herds in case of dzud. The project also supports local authorities in remote districts in the development of disaster management plans.

Madagascar and Mozambique are a natural fit for a practical UAS training partnership as they are separated by 400 km of Indian Ocean and face similar natural disaster risks: cyclones, earthquakes, and floods. Both countries also rank high in terms of socio-economic vulnerability.

Malawi is a small country in southern Africa with a population of 14 million people who mainly rely on agriculture as a means of subsistence. In 2017, drought in the country affected more than half the population. EU humanitarian support enables Malawian communities to build resilience against natural disasters such as floods and drought.
This EU-funded project uses drones to create maps. The maps help to locate resources such as hospitals, schools, and roads which are all vital in providing safe shelter for the population in case of a disaster. When any population is trained and aware of disaster risks and safe spaces, lives are saved.

Residents of different ages have different needs.
Condensation, ageing of society, digitalisation are current realities that have an impact on our living environments.
We research the connections and effects and develop solutions. The focus is on the question of how we create or maintain quality of life - for whom, in what way and why.
Mobility is, for example, an important factor of quality of life with increasing age in terms of independence. Spatial references and connections have a direct influence on infrastructure planning, which in turn has a retroactive effect on the daily quality of life. The visualization shows a rich data basis based on the object of observation 'Zurich'. Households are linked to specific infrastructures (points of interest) and bundled into common 'corridors'. The different needs of young and old (coloured red and blue respectively) become visible.
