“The Sun is 93 million miles from Earth. In 1610, Galileo observed sunspots on its surface, proving that the Sun was rotating and at different speeds. It also proved that you never know who's watching you.”

― Stewart Stafford

Stewart was born in New York City to Irish parents. The family moved back to Ireland when he was three years old.

His natural gift for writing appeared early (he is related to the Irish poet Austin Clarke). His first school report card when he was five had just one comment at the end: "Stewart writes very interesting stories."

He listened to his grandmother's tales of the Banshee in her kitchen and was enthralled and terrified. It was direct exposure to Ireland's Celtic storytelling tradition, and he got hooked. Stewart loves the folktales, traditions and superstitions of Ireland, the country that gave the world the festival of Halloween and Dracula author Bram Stoker. He went on to do an Irish Folklore course in University College Dublin. He also has qualifications in Theatre Studies, Criminology and Social Media for Business.

"The falling leaves drift by the window

The autumn leaves of red and gold

I see your lips, the summer kisses

The sun-burned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long

And soon I'll hear old winter's song

But I miss you most of all my darling

When autumn leaves start to fall."

~ Lyrics by Johnny Mercer and Jacques Prévert

Doc and our son-in-law John tackling our driveway early this morning.

Quite a lot of snow came down in a matter of a few hours. I think we will have well over a foot before it is all over. The big plows are out clearing our major roads, and many accidents have taken place by those who were not prepared or are inexperienced when it comes to winter driving.

Welcome to winter in Alaska everybody!

Since we are about to enjoy a long 4th of July weekend here in America - I thought I would take this time to wish everyone a very happy holiday - and as Yogi Berra would say - "When you arrive at a fork in the road, take it."

**(If you look closely - the mountain is looking back at you)

Jack Frost can take the tiniest leaf and turn it into a jewel.

Our temperature dropped to 26 degrees Fahrenheit last night, and the weather forecast calls for snow almost every day for the next six days. Winter is about to settle over Alaska, and most likely will remain for the next 6 months.

The larder is full - the wood pile is full - and the snow blower stands ready. Time for Doc and I to settle in and enjoy the most peaceful time of year.

As she ages

I watch i know

From a tiny child all those years ago

She will be who she wants to be

And at some point

All she will have is a memory of me.

A blustery day in Southeast Alaska. Time to settle in with a good book, and listen to the rain as it taps at the window panes.

This slider was used for Smile on Saturday theme: Needles or Spines. Original picture taken through glass was dull and lackluster. Sliders brought out the beauty of this fish. See original:

Taken at the Audubon Aquarium in New Orleans (new upload).

"Lionfish have fleshy tentacles above their eyes and below the mouth; fan-like pectoral fins; long, separated dorsal spines; 13 dorsal spines; 10-11 dorsal soft rays; 3 anal spines; and 6-7 anal soft rays."

Lionfish are considered an invasive species in the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean where they have no known predators. Unlike the Pacific Ocean where their enemies are sharks, tiger grouper, eels, cornetfish, and scorpionfish.

They are carnivorous and eat native herbivore fish which in turn leads to algae on coral reefs growing unabated.

"Their venomous spines can deliver a painful sting that can last for days. The sting can cause sweating, respiratory distress, and even paralysis."

Moral of the story: Don't mess with a Lionfish!

But Happy Smile on Saturday!

It wasn't just the old lady who lived in a shoe. There was also a middle aged photographer. (Be nice - I like to consider 42 middle aged).

Can't wait to see what they got on this year.

More info about it here: www.vividsydney.com/?gclid=Cj0KEQjwvuuqBRDG95yR6tmfg9oBEi...

Till then, I hope you enjoy this one.
