Cuba St., Palmerston North

The Evening Post (May 1919) reports the registration of this new company: [paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=EP...]

...and an early photograph in the PNth City Library Collection is worth a peek: [digitallibrary.palmerstonnorth.com/awweb/awarchive?item=3...]

The Manawatu Standard sang the praises of these industrious gents in 1927, thus: "To commence in a small building with a staff of only two, and to grow to the extent of having 14 hands, in seven years, is a fair criterion of good service to the public and the gaining of their confidence. This has been accomplished by Messrs. Beattie and Procter Ltd., plumbers, gasfitters and sanitary engineers...expert workmanship and considerate attention is the slogan of this enterprising firm."

=====

In 2011, creative designer Stacey Cottrill bought the building, and spent as much as the building is worth on earthquake strengthening.

The single-storey brick building with a distinctive facade and beautiful lead lighting was recently a computer shop - now it's home to Black Sheep Design, and part of the Northwest Square heritage area included in the PNth 2011 district plan.

2323 Mc Kee Road

Closed 2004 with the remaining San Jose K Mart stores.

The building remains today, though heavily remodeled by Kohl's in their (at the time) first entrance into the Bay Area.

Of note in the images, the Mc Donald's and other shops in the parking lot did not exist yet. Interstate 680 also was no more than a dirt patch next to the parking lot and there was no Independence High School (to the left of K Mart)
