2323 Mc Kee Road

Closed 2004 with the remaining San Jose K Mart stores.

The building remains today, though heavily remodeled by Kohl's in their (at the time) first entrance into the Bay Area.

Of note in the images, the Mc Donald's and other shops in the parking lot did not exist yet. Interstate 680 also was no more than a dirt patch next to the parking lot.

Entitled: Men With Leopard At The Dongan Mission, China [1932] Fr. O Rauschenbach [RESTORED] Minor spot removal, image size doubled, tonal and contrast adjustments. minor edge restoration, a Sepia and then fake Blue - Yellow Duotone.

This image was found on the University Of Southern California Library's Internet Mission Photography Archives. The following is from their title page:

"The Internet Mission Photography Archive offers historical images from Protestant and Catholic missionary collections in Britain, Norway, Germany, and the United States. The photographs, which range in time from the middle of the nineteenth to the middle of the twentieth century, offer a visual record of missionary activities and experiences in Africa, China, Madagascar, India, Papua-New Guinea, and the Caribbean. The photographs reveal the physical influence of missions, visible in mission compounds, churches, and school buildings, as well as the cultural impact of mission teaching, religious practices, and Western technology and fashions. Indigenous peoples' responses to missions and the emergence of indigenous churches are represented, as are views of landscapes, cities, and towns before and in the early stages of modern development."

According to their information about this image:

"This is a photograph of a group of five men proudly displaying the leopard they shot in the mission compound at Dongan. It was the second leopard shot on the compound and it weighed 66 lbs."

Further, about the sad fate of the photographer, who was in China as a Clergyman:

"Born in Missouri, Fr. Rauschenbach entered Maryknoll in 1918 and was ordained to the priesthood on June 15, 1924. He was assigned to South China, where he spent the next twenty-one years in Maryknoll's Kongmoon Vicariate. Fr. Otto used dispensaries and radio broadcasts to interest people in Christ's message. He was also responsible for many buildings, including the compound at Nanfau and hospital at Toishan. During World War II, while the entire Kongmoon Territory was encircled by the Japanese, Fr. Otto remained with his people during their time of need. On May 14, 1945, he was killed by bandits while ministering to the Christians in the area."

Altawandron Locked in Ice

Fate of Tug Off Long Point, Lake Erie is Still in Doubt

BRANTFORD, Ont., March 29.- The fate of the tug Altawandron and its crew of five men, locked in the ice on Lake Erie some miles from Long Point, remained in doubt today. It was stated by the light keepers at Long Point, that the visibility was so poor owing to a heavy haze that it was impossible to see any sight of either the Altawandron or the tug Jean F., which was reported to have been ice-locked Itself when going to the aid of the Altawandron yesterday. Word has been received at Long Point, however, that another tug had put out from Port Dover in an effort to reach the stranded fishermen and the light keeper reported hearing sounds of heavy explosions as though efforts were being made to dynamite a passage through the ice.

George Fink (1891-1975) • the French/Italian inspired architecture was, “a combination of what seemed best in each, with an added touch of gaiety to suit

the Florida mood.” -George Merrick

• Merrick's team: architects, landscape planner, artistic advisor, real estate officer, engineers • Supervisor of Color Phineas Paist (1873-1937) became supervising architect, responsible for ensuring aethetic consistency through codes, established Board of Architects Review Panel that still functions • Paist bioPhineas Paist & the Architecture of Coral Gables (pdf)

• opened with strong sales, Merrick invested profits in expansion, founded U. of Miami • for unknown reasons, Merrick decided to diverge from consistent Mediterranean aesthetic at peak of land boom in 1925 • sold former OH governor Meyers Y. Cooper (1873-1958) hundreds of acres for express purpose of building houses/villages in traditional designs of other states, nations • goal was authenticity, not imitation, each of 14 planned villages to be designed by architect familiar with chosen style

• "Seven Miami architects and five New York architects are uniting in working out the details of the great planning of house construction. Thirteen styles are being used, drawn from various regions and nations which harmonize with the Mediterranean style now in use." -Meyers Y. Cooper • before 1926 Great Miami Hurricane & land bust ended construction, 7 villages completed: Dutch South African, Chinese, French Normandy, Florida Pioneer/Colonial, French Country, French City, Italian • fewer than 80 of the 1000 planned residences built

Entitled: Leuchtturm im Cantonfluss (Lighthouse In The Canton River) [c1891] CR Hager [RESTORED] I removed very minor spot and scratches, evened the tone of the sky, and enlarged the image. I selectively added shadow depth by darkening the interior and undersides of the larger boats, along with the shadow side of the lighthouses. This effectively boosted the contrast range on what was arguably a very flat original. I also lightened the tone of the water to provide better separation for the boats. A final sepia tone for warmth and appearance of age.

The original was found in the University of Southern California Library's Internet Mission Photography Archive:

The title refers to a lighthouse (but there are actually two, one obvious in the left center, and a distant one along the right edge of the photograph) that was found in the Pearl River around the turn of the 20th century. One has to remember that during those days, there really weren't any lights at night unless one provided it, and lights on the river itself delineating hazardous landmarks probably saved many vessels from smashing themselves against the various rocks or land features that were apparent in a winding river system. This image of a permanent man made navigation aid in the Pearl River is the first one that I've ever seen for that era. If anyone has more images like this, or know of any, please provide a link.
