👩‍🏫 "Light on Life’s Difficulties" by James Allen is a self-improvement book that explores how to overcome life’s challenges through positive thinking, mental discipline, and self-mastery. Allen emphasizes that difficulties are opportunities for growth and that our attitude toward challenges determines our success and happiness. He highlights the importance of personal responsibility, inner wisdom, and living in harmony with universal laws. Through deep and inspiring reflections, the author encourages readers to cultivate resilience, self-control, and a higher understanding of life’s purpose.

When a man enters a dark room he is not sure of his movements, he cannot see objects around him, or properly locate them, and is liable to hurt himself by coming into sudden contact with them. But let a light be introduced, and immediately all confusion disappears. Every object is seen, and there is no danger of being hurt. To the majority, life is such a dark room, and their frequent hurts their disappointments, perplexities, sorrows and pains are caused by sudden contact with principles which they do not see, and are therefore not prepared to deal with. But when the light of wisdom is introduced into the darkened understanding, confusion vanishes, difficulties are dissolved, all things are seen in their true place and proportion, and henceforth the man walks open-eyed and unhurt, in the clear light of wise comprehension. - Summary by James Allen

Léon Bonvin was born in Vaugirard, just outside Paris in 1834. Despite displaying great talent in the medium of watercolor he was largely unrecognized by his contemporaries. In 1866 he hanged himself at the age of 32, apparently due to financial difficulties. Working at his family's bar or "cabaret," he sketched and painted watercolors only in his spare moments, yet in the seven year period between 1859 and his death he created numerous exquisite still lifes of flowers and fruits, and subtle landscapes capturing fleeting atmospheric effects. There is evidence that, despite his rural home, Bonvin did have knowledge of the art world in Paris. His half-brother was the better known artist, François Bonvin. In addition Bonvin's still lifes show the influence of Jean-Siméon Chardin (1699-1779), whose work was undergoing a revival in the 1850s and 60s.

During the 19th century an appreciation of Bonvin's work was confined to a small circle of connoisseurs and collectors, most prominent among them William T. Walters, father of Henry Walters, founder of the Walters Art Museum. For much of the 19th century William displayed and stored his watercolors in a deluxe leather-bound album with a specially commissioned frontispiece and tailpiece by the renowned flower painter of the Lyon school, Jean-Marie Reignier (see WAM 37.1501 and 37. 1531). William's collection of Bonvin's work was acquired between 1862 and 1891, and eventually comprised 56 watercolors and one, rare oil; today, this is the largest collection of Bonvin's work in existence.

[1] In a diary entry Lucas records that Bonvin made 12 watercolors for William T. Walters in 1863. The commission was likely given on 12 February (see Randall, Diary of George A. Lucas, vol. 2, p. 150), on 14 October of the same year Lucas records "Bonvin delivered the 12th flower for W's - paid him the remaining 100 fs making 300 fs for the 12" (Randall, Diary of George A. Lucas, vol. 2, p. 163).

Ely's had quite a few structural difficulties in the course of its history. The Cathedral is situated in the middle of the Cambridge fens, and the town was actually an island in the middle ages. So very boggy ground, and Romanesque builders were impatient with Church foundations!

As you can see here, the North West transept collapsed in medieval times and was never rebuilt. The Octagon on the left replaced an enormous central tower which also collapsed when the Lady Chapel was being built. And the huge West Tower leans as well, and has been subject to many attempts over time to strengthen it

Difficulties that have roosted in pride are, surprisingly, much harder to dislodge than those that have rooted.

There seems to be a malfunction in my sitting mechanism. Can I still have a treat?

-----------------------------------

"411 Tudor" is the designation for a specific glass product design made in Newark, Ohio by the Heisey Glass Company (1896 to 1957). Heisey glass designs are called "patterns". Pattern designations include a number (not necessarily consecutively numbered during the history of the glass factory) and a name. Some pattern names were given by the Heisey company, while others were given by Heisey glass researchers.

The source of silica for Heisey glass is apparently undocumented, but was possibly a sandstone deposit in the Glassrock area (Glenford & Chalfants area) of Perry County, Ohio (if anyone can provide verfication of this, please inform me). Quarries in the area targeted the Pennsylvanian-aged Massillon Sandstone (Pottsville Group) and processed it into glass sand suitable for glass making.

From museum signage:

Augustus H. Heisey (1842-1922) emigrated from Germany with his family in 1843. They settled in Merrittown, Pennsylvania and after graduation from the Merrittown Academy, he worked for a short time in the printing business.

In 1861, he began his life-long career in the glass industry by taking a job as a clerk with the King Glass Company of Pittsburgh. After a stint in the Union Army, Heisey joined the Ripley Glass Company as a salesman. It was there that he earned his reputation of "the best glass salesman on the road".

In 1870, Heisey married Susan Duncan, daughter of George Duncan, then part-owner of the Ripley Company and later full owner, at which time he changed its name to George Duncan & Sons. A year later, he deeded a quarter interest to each of his two children. A few years after his death, A.H. Heisey and James Duncan became sole owners. In 1891, the company joined the U.S. Glass Company to escape its financial difficulties. Heisey was the commercial manager.

Heisey began to formulate plans for his own glass company in 1893. He chose Newark, Ohio because there was an abundance of natural gas nearby and, due to the efforts of the Newark Board of Trade, there was plenty of low cost labor available. Construction of the factory at 301 Oakwood Avenue began in 1895 and it opened in April of 1896 with one sixteen-pot furnace. In its heyday, the factory had three furnaces and employed nearly seven hundred people. There was a great demand for the fine glass and Heisey sold it all over the world.

The production in the early years was confined to pressed ware, in the style of imitation cut glass. The company also dealt extensively with hotel barware. By the late 1890s, Heisey revived the colonial patterns with flutes, scallops, and panels which had been so popular decades earlier. These were so well accepted that from that time on, at least one colonial line was made continuously until the factory closed.

A.H. Heisey's name appears on many different design patents including some when he was with George Duncan & Sons. Heisey patterns that he was named the designer include 1225 Plain Band, 305 Punty and Diamond Point, and 1776 Kalonyal.

Other innovations instituted by A.H. Heisey were the pioneering in advertising glassware in magazines nationally, starting as early as 1910 and the first glass company to make fancy pressed stems. That idea caught on quickly and most hand-wrought stemware is made in this manner, even now.

The Explanation For Our Difficulties

"…that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us…" [John 17:21]

If you are going through a time of isolation, seemingly all alone, read John 17 . It will explain exactly why you are where you are— because Jesus has prayed that you “may be one” with the Father as He is. Are you helping God to answer that prayer, or do you have some other goal for your life? Since you became a disciple, you cannot be as independent as you used to be. God reveals in John 17 that His purpose is not just to answer our prayers, but that through prayer we might come to discern His mind. Yet there is one prayer which God must answer, and that is the prayer of Jesus— “…that they may be one just as We are one…” (Jhn.17:22). Are we as close to Jesus Christ as that? God is not concerned about our plans; He doesn’t ask, “Do you want to go through this loss of a loved one, this difficulty, or this defeat?” No, He allows these things for His own purpose. The things we are going through are either making us sweeter, better, and nobler men and women, or they are making us more critical and fault-finding, and more insistent on our own way. The things that happen either make us evil, or they make us more saintly, depending entirely on our relationship with God and its level of intimacy. If we will pray, regarding our own lives, “Your will be done” (Mat.26:42), then we will be encouraged and comforted by John 17, knowing that our Father is working according to His own wisdom, accomplishing what is best. When we understand God’s purpose, we will not become small-minded and cynical. Jesus prayed nothing less for us than absolute oneness with Himself, just as He was one with the Father. Some of us are far from this oneness; yet God will not leave us alone until we are one with Him— because Jesus prayed, “…that they all may be one….” Hallelujah, God bless

difficulty in maintaining the library. The shareholders finally offered to give the library, then consisting of 4700 volumes, to the town on condition that it be made free, and Gideon L. Spencer offered the use of a room rent free for five years. These offers were accepted, and in 1876 the Pawtucket Free Public Library was opened in the Spencer block. January, 1888, it was removed to its present quarters in the Sheldon building. The room occupied is 60 by 90 feet with large windows on both sides. A unique feature in the manner of conducting the library is that the books are accessible to all. So progressive has been the administration of this library in the inauguration of the open shelf system, the close relation of its work with that of the public schools, and its far-reaching influence with the children who frequent the reading room, that it ranks as one of the most important public libraries of the country. The library now contains 15,000 volumes. Mrs. Minerva A. Sanders was chosen librarian when the library became a public institution, and is still its active head. Her assistants are Fannie Collins, Annie I. Mooney and Edith H. Mason. The officers of the library at present are: Board of trustees—Ansel D. Nickerson, president, term expires 1897; William R. Sayles, vice-president, term expires 1896; Edmund A. Darling, secretary, term expires 1896; Erving Y. Woolley, term expires 1897; Fred Sherman, term expires 1898; Alonzo E. Pierce, term expires 1898; Ex-officio Henry E. Tiepke, mayor; Charles H. Jenks, president of common council; Henry H. Davison, chairman city library committee; Henry Barker, chairman school committee; Gilman P. Fisher, superintendent of public schools. The Hon. W. F. Sayles, Who died May 7, 1894, bequeathed the sum of $100,000 to the city of Pawtucket to purchase a lot of land and erect a library building for the Free Public Library. This legacy is to be payable three years after the testator’s death and according to the terms of the will “the gift shall not go into effect except my said son shall approve of the same in writing.” Mr. Sayles’s son, Frank A., who is chief heir, has signified his intention orally to the trustees of the library to erect a fine building, sometime in the near future. Consequently, Pawtucket will probably have a library building of which her citizens will be proud.
