The difficult part of taking pictures of some insects is that they scurry so quickly, making it difficult to get a clear image. This little critter was zipping up the tall stalk of a flower and I followed his progress all the way to the top. Once there, he sat motionless. Only his antennae waved back and forth as he surveyed his new kingdom. I could imagine him shouting...I AM KING OF THE MOUNTAIN!

Difficult light conditions, but great for bathing

A very difficult species to find because of their nomadic life style constantly looking for a bumper crop of pine cones. Regardless of the time of year when a bumper crop is located they will nest and raise a brood. It is not uncommon to find them singing and building nests in the middle of winter. They have been known to nest as far south as Georgia in their errant wanderings searching for that good cone crop. If we do find a good flock of them on a given year because of a good supply of food there is no guarantee they will return again another year.

Eight different forms of crossbills have been identified and all share the same colouring but differ in body size, bill shapes and sizes but they rarely interbreed.

This female is foraging in the salt on the shoulder of a parking lot.

A difficult fungus to identify, there are quite a few similar species that grow on the same substrate. A possibility is: Pholiota adiposa is a slimy, scaly, yellow-brown mushroom. It is found in North America and Eurasia. It grows parasitically or saprotrophically, most often on beech species, fruiting in bunches between August and November. Several compounds produced by this mushroom, for example methyl gallate, are of interest for their medicinal properties. (Wikipedia)

A medium-sized songbird endemic to New Zealand, restricted to predator-free offshore islands and North Island mainland sanctuaries. Male has a black head with conspicuous white ear tufts and a white wingbar. Note the vibrant yellow neck and shoulder band. Females and juveniles only have the white wingbar. Curious by nature, confidently approaching people at close range. Despite this, the species can be difficult to spot due to its rapid movements. Both sexes give a high-pitched, single-noted “titch” warning call. Males also produce whistled calls of 2-3 notes. Females can be distinguished from bellbirds by lack of green coloration. Also note the constantly cocked tail and the white wing patches. (eBird)

Twice seen and only in tightly protected reserves, the Stitchbird prefers the darker sections of the forests. This is not a great photo, but it is the only one that I managed to get that was not just a blur of noise. It is so sad to me that NZ's native birds have to be confined to these protected areas in order to survive. It is also the only member of its family, so if NZ loses the Stitchbird, it loses an entire bird family.

“In order to see birds it is necessary to become a part of the silence.”

I've said before that I'm no bird photographer - I don't have the patience or the long lenses to do it well. My better half is in the same boat equipment wise, but is willing to put in the time and is good at teasing out some nice results. Consequently, I would be remiss if I didn't come along and at least give it a try. We didn't see any birds at first - that quote above is very true - you have to stand still, watch, and listen. These quiet little yellow rumped warblers were not far away and constantly flitting around - making them visible but difficult to capture in camera. After several shots of empty branches, I did manage to get a couple that might work. Thanks, Lynn!

After a difficult week...

Found it a little difficult to rationalise my favourite read! Decided to opt for one of my fairly recent favourites, Hugh Howeys excellent dystopian future ‘Wool’. Only originally written as a short story, the author extended the story into a novel then a trilogy of books. Apparently optioned as a movie that hasn’t been filmed yet!

Posting early as I’m back to work this week, will catch up later!

HMM!

A juvenile, size 02-03mm, from the same place as where I found the springtails from 21-07-2019. This one found in a handful of mud...

A very difficult and special picture.

Taking a picture of the Milky Way is not easy because you depend on many external factors: Night without moon, no clouds, no light pollution and right time of the year, but trying to take this kind of pictures in the North of Poland is even harder, since the Sun light never “disappears” from the Sky. Between 22 and 3 AM you got a huge ball of light that goes from West to East very close to horizon. Sunrise was at 3:30 that day.

You can see this light on the left side, by the way my first Milky Way since I arrived to Poland one year and a half ago.

This picture was taken in Mazury, North East of Poland, close to Russia, a region with more than 2.000 lakes like the one in the picture, under the Milky Way, the little peninsula with bungalows were we stayed.

Difficult birds to identify unless they are heard and this one never made a sound. I was thinking Least Flycatcher but the eye ring doesn't seem bold enough.

A difficult bird to get a clean shot, was quite lucky to sight two of them - a pair - on some nice perches. It belongs to the large cuckoo family, but non-parasitic, i.e. it doesn't lay its eggs in other birds nests. The bird is easily recognizable by the bluish eye from which it derives its name. I had seen this bird dart off into trees where there were other birds nests several times, but I am not sure if it is a nest raider. Incidentally the bird is only found in South India and Sri Lanka.

Thanks in advance for your views and / or feedback. Much appreciated.

Past couple of years was incredibly difficult for many of us, yet, as a human race, together we have marched on.

On the years ahead we will face many more challenges, but again, as a human race we will move forward.

The irony is that many in the privileged world is denying the opportunity they have in hand. Whereas, the underprivileged can only wait and watch and suffer.

Many of us will have to pay the price for their sins, perhaps not in this lifetime but the next. Many of them are already paying the price in this lifetime for the sins of ours.

From all of this, we will move on, at least for now. In all of this we forgot that Knowledge and Wisdom are not the same. Today we all know everything, yet be none the wiser.

No one has seen tomorrow, but we all know it will come. I wish we all could do something better today such that we have a better tomorrow.

I wish all of you a Very Happy New Year of 2022. Lets act together, however small it is, to make a better tomorrow.

With this I will post the last image of this year, which I was extremely fortunate to witness and capture. I have already posted a few of them before, but this one is the culmination of exposure blending of 51 images (17 images each of -1, 0, +1 EV).

Once again, Best Wishes for a Happy New Year.

It is very difficult to cope with this feeling, not knowing where you belong and not being able to internalize the place you live in is one of the heaviest burdens, it is not good for mental health, it is very difficult to struggle alone, but the nature and animals that surround me are always good companions for me.

If you want to see the statue up close, you can visit it from here. Who knows, maybe it will awaken completely different feelings in you.

'Biblical'. I enjoyed a wild camp on Kinder Scout on Tuesday nigh. For the whole day, the weather pattern was repeated cycles of hail-storms, high winds and rainbows. It made photography extremely difficult, but what an experience it was to be amongst it!

This is certainly no compositional masterpiece, however it difficult enough just taking the image.

Thanks for looking.

Difficult to accept that in a country as wealthy as ours that some actually seek out places such as this for shelter.

Always sad news to hear that one of our heritage railway's reluctantly have to cease trading. Hopefully this can get sorted and we can see scenes like GWR Collett 5643 leaving the Berwyn Station again

One of the most difficult dragon shots because of the background that matches the subject, the perch, the dead vegetation, and the foreground. it took me months to determine that, (1) this was a female, (2) a meadowhawk - though that was easier, and (3) a Western Meadowhawk because it couldn't be anything else. While not a new species, it was the first female Western Hawk I ever photographed and, since they're so darn hard to see, probably the last.

Though a little noisy, view large to see the pattern on the abdomen.

Suddenly another bird arrived and he/she fluff up the feathers to look much larger than they really are and face an attacker boldly.

Momotus aequatorialis (Andean motmot / Barranquero)

Bird in freedom. La Ceja, Colombia; Central Andes; 2.300 meters above sea level.

The Andean Motmot, as the English name implies, is the Andean representative of the "Blue-crowned Motmot" complex. For many years, all members of this group were considered to be conspecific, but this group now is reclassified as representing five different species. The Andean Motmot occurs in humid montane forests of the Andes mountains of South America, from Colombia south to Bolivia. Andean motmot is a big bird about 50 cm from beak to tail.

These birds often sit still, and in their dense forest habitat can be difficult to see, despite their size. They eat small prey such as insects and lizards, and will also regularly take fruit.

Difficult to escape a puddle of water for this springtail. Helped with a tip of kitchen paper that absorbed the water so that the springtail could get away. Also seen the same problems with Lipothrix lubbocki.

Capturing this scene was easy, just being right place right time. Then spent some time cleaning the dirt from my sensor.

The difficult job here is that hook that was probably installed more then 100 years ago, no hydraulic, pneumatic or electric to help. With the man power...that was difficult, we have it so easy now, dont event realise it !

This photo is the first in a series from my off-trail / bushwhack hike a couple of weeks ago up into the wilderness of Roaring Fork in the Smoky Mountains. This point marks the furthest I've hiked as I found some beautiful cascades that I spent a good hour at least exploring and photographing. Have these cascades ever been photographed before... somehow I doubt it. On this trip I also absolutely learned why this creek is named Roaring Fork - it was definitely roaring due to recent rain and made the trek through the water a little more difficult (& scary) than normal. :) -H3

being knowledgeable is essential, because, to me, nothing appears quite so difficult as to pose a model well and light him correctly, for the very reason that it seems so simple to do.

In the interest of photography and photographers I cannot urge amateurs enough to understand that photography is not a trade but an art and that, as a consequence, their feeling and their knowledge must be reflected in their works just as the feeling of a painter is reflected in his paintings :-)
