Der Rumpf der Fähre “Ellen” (IMO 9805374, MMSI 219023531, Rufzeichen OWJQ) wurde 2017 von Morska Stocznia Remontowa Gryfia in Stettin gebaut, der Endausbau erfolgte 2018 auf der Søby Værft. Am 15. August 2019 wurde die Fähre auf der rund zehn Seemeilen langen Strecke zwischen den süddänischen Häfen Fynshav (an der Ostküste der Insel Als) und Søby (auf Ærø) in Dienst gestellt. Die Fähre war zu diesem Zeitpunkt die vermutlich weltgrößte vollelektrische Fähre. Die Baukosten betrugen einschließlich der neuen Hafeninfrastruktur und der Ladestationen knapp 30 Millionen Euro.
Die “Ellen” ist 59,5 Meter lang, 12,80 Meter breit, hat eine Seitenhöhe von 3,70 Meter und einen maximalen Tiefgang von 2,50 Meter. Auf dem 458 m² großen Hauptdeck befindet sich ein 8,5 m breites, durchlaufendes Fahrzeugdeck mit 145 Spurmetern. Hier können 31 Pkw bzw. vier 18,5 Meter lange Lkw sowie zusätzlich acht Pkw auf drei Fahrspuren befördert werden. Die Fähre ist für 196 Passagiere zugelassen. Zuzüglich der vier Besatzungsmitglieder ist an Bord Platz für 200 Personen. In den Wintermonaten stehen die Plätze auf dem Außendeck nicht zur Verfügung. Dadurch reduziert sich die Passagierkapazität auf 147 Personen. Das Schiff wird dann von drei Besatzungsmitgliedern gefahren
Die Fähre wird von zwei Elektromotoren mit jeweils 750 kW Leistung angetrieben, die über Wendegetriebe auf zwei Festpropeller wirken. Sie erreicht damit eine Geschwindigkeit von rund 14 Knoten (ca. 26 km/h). Die Dienstgeschwindigkeit beträgt 13,5 Knoten. Die beiden Antriebsmotoren wurden in zwei unabhängigen Maschinenräumen untergebracht. Das Schiff ist mit zwei von Elektromotoren mit 250 kW Leistung angetriebenen Bugstrahlrudern ausgestattet. Für die Stromversorgung der Motoren und des Bordbetriebs stehen Lithium-Ionen-Akkumulatoren des Schweizer Herstellers Leclanché mit 4,3 MWh zur Verfügung. Diese werden während der Hafenliegezeit in Søby automatisch aufgeladen. Die Fähre kann mit vollständig geladenen Akkumulatoren rund 60 Seemeilen zurücklegen. Auf einen Dieselgenerator zur Stromerzeugung für den Notfall wurde verzichtet. Stattdessen wurden die Akkumulatoren auf zwanzig Einheiten aufgeteilt, so dass im Falle einer Störung nicht die gesamte Stromversorgung der Antriebsmotoren ausfällt.
Der Verbrauch der Fähre beträgt pro Rundreise rund 1.650 kWh. Der Strombedarf des Schiffes soll mittelfristig vollständig aus regenerativen Energiequellen gedeckt werden, so dass die Fähre CO2-neutral betrieben werden kann.

Die Fertigstellung erfolgte am 18. Dezember 1988. Anschließend lag die Fähre bis November 1990 auf, wurde aber zwischenzeitlich in “Mercandia IV” umbenannt. Vom 1. November 1990 bis zum 30 Mai 1996 diente sie auf der Route Kalundborg – Juelsminde, seit 1. Juni 1996 auf der Øresundroute Helsingør – Helsingborg. Sie ist 95,8 Meter lang, 15,0 Meter breit und hat einen maximalen Tiefgang von 3,60 Meter. Sie kann 170 PKW transportieren und ist für 400 Passagiere zugelassen. Die Besonderheit der vollkommen symmetrisch aufgebauten Doppelendfähren liegt im Konzept ohne Maschinenraum. Statt einer herkömmlichen Antriebsanlage sind auf jeder Seite des Schiffes fünf Cummins-Dieselgeneratoren mit einer Gesamtleistung von 2.750 kW (3.739 PS) in schallgedämpften Gehäusen an Deck aufgestellt. Sie liefern den Strom für die vier Schottel-Ruderpropeller.
Im Sommer 2025 verkehrt die "Mercandia IV" auf der Alslinjen Bojden - Fynshav, bis der Neubau "Nerthus" auf dieser Route eingesetzt wird.
