In 2017, I took the winter interterm class in Dharamshala, India. This was my first trip out of the country after I moved to the U.S. My friend and I went to India a week before the class started. We left on Thanksgiving and I still remember our Thanksgiving dinner which was Einstein's sandwiches with a Netflix movie.
I learned so much about the Tibetan culture. I got to connect with Tibetan people who escaped Tibet by crossing the Himalayas. It was really cold when we were there and I loved going out to different coffee shops around the area for hot tea and Tibetan soup. This trip helped me find my passion for traveling and learning about the world!
Dharamshala is a compound Hindi word formed by combining dharma and shala, and can be translated as spiritual dwelling or sanctuary.
Traditionally, dharamshalas were built as shelters or rest houses near pilgrimage destinations to give visitors a place to sleep for the night.
These were typically built by philanthropists or charitable organisations, and were either free or very cheap to stay at for short periods of time. As times have changed, many dharamshalas have transformed into low-grade commercial hotels while maintaining "dharamshala" in their names.
Our lodging for the next three days is none other than the residence of Raja of Kanoch (Kangra, H.P) who is married to Princess of Jodhpur, Rajasthan (from where she is presently the Member of Parliament).
The Raja has converted his property in HP and Rajasthan as tourist resorts, both by the name, Clods End Villa.
The cottage in the background is where i stayed during this trip.
