Micro-resonators are small optical devices designed to trap light. To guide light into these devices, we use a taper—an optical fiber that’s been stretched so thin it’s almost invisible to the naked eye. In the image, the thin fiber shown is the taper. Perpendicular to the taper is a micro-resonator made of optical fiber, with a diameter of 125 µm. As the red light passes through the taper, it reaches a point where the fibers meet. The taper is so thin at this junction that the light can "jump" from the taper into the micro-resonator. Once inside, the light circulates, and its intensity is amplified. This amplification leads to various nonlinear effects, such as the generation of optical frequency combs. My project focuses on studying these nonlinear phenomena.
