The California Department of Insurance yesterday, led a statewide enforcement outreach focused on providing information to businesses that may operate in California’s multi-billion dollar underground economy. The multi-agency team, which included the Contractors State License Board, the Employment Development Department, Franchise Tax Board, Department of Industrial Relations and local district attorneys visited dozens of locations across the state to educate business owners of their obligations to comply with insurance, licensing, workplace safety, labor laws and tax codes.

Each year the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) hosts an Annual Ministerial Review (AMR) where Government Ministers look at the progress countries are making toward reaching internationally agreed development goals (IADG), including the Millennium Development Goals.
This year’s theme is Education.
UNICEF, UNFPA, and ECOSOC teamed up to ensure that the voice of young people also continues to be part of this important dialogue.
Young people from around the world were invited to contribute their ideas through a Facebook discussion page. Seven participants were chosen to speak directly to the ECOSOC Ministers via teleconference at a July 7 meeting.
The meeting was opened by Ambassador Frederick Barton, U.S. Vice Ambassador to ECOSOC and Dr. Paulette A. Bethel, Ambassador of the Bahamas to the United Nations.

(Edgar Martins for The New York Times) In May 2006, Credit Suisse issued the developers of this new all-season ski-and-golf resort in Idaho $250 million in loans and credit. With the money, the property’s owners began to construct an elaborate European-style village that was to include luxury restaurants and condominiums; in the foothills of the mountains, hundreds of properties were erected, including private chalets, cottages, town homes and large estates. Sales began to slow, however, during the credit crunch. Last March, Tamarack closed, and the resort’s 200 workers were laid off. Foreclosed chalets sit in the foothills, and the European-style village now lies dormant and only half-finished.

Breakout panel discussions will foster dialogue on topics including private sector partnerships, capacity building and workforce development, innovative finance, the post-2015 global development agenda, Ebola recovery in West Africa, and the strategic role of development in overall U.S. foreign policy. GDF will feature over 40 speakers, including key stakeholders from U.S. government agencies, leading multilateral and non-governmental organizations, foreign governments, and the private sector.
With a significant reduction in extreme poverty and an increase in private financial flows to the developing world over the past two decades, the face of development is rapidly changing. Meeting today’s challenges calls for innovation and effective partnerships across sectors, with an emphasis on improving governance and leveraging the role of the private sector.
The 2015 Global Development Forum will be held on Thursday, April 23, from 8:00AM – 3:45PM at the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ headquarters.

Women Group – Star of Hope, Ghana
In Ghana Star of Hope is supporting around 20 nurseries and schools. In addition Star of Hope Ghana is supporting village development projects, one of them is in Osae Krodua.
In Osae Krodua the local women group received economical and other support to start a small agricultural project. From cassava the women produce gari, which is used for cooking. From harvesting the cassava until the final product reaches the local market, several steps are involved. The 40 women share workload and income.

My character was Budai and the dichotomy was Excess and Contentment.
