Development Partnerships VIP Events - 10 June 2019 During the 18th World Meteorological Congress: public.wmo.int/en/eighteenth-world-meteorological-congres...
Earlier this month, the European Commission (EC) held its tenth ‘European Development Days’ (EDD) forum at the Tour & Taxis in Brussels. The stated aim for this annual gathering is to, “bring the development community together each year to share ideas and experiences in ways that inspire new partnerships and innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.” Recognizing a connection between this goal and the United Nation’s (UN) 17 newly adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, also known as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development), the EC made the 2030 Agenda this year’s focus.
The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was invited to give the opening remarks and I was on hand with my press pass and camera to cover his address. He observed that the forum was “timely and influential,” and adding that, “[t]he UN counts on your ideas and your partnerships to build a better future for all humanity, for people, planet, peace, and prosperity.” Those four final ‘P’ words, along with ‘partnerships’ make up the 5 ‘areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet’ which the goals target.
Mr. Ban had been introduced by Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Vice-President of the European Commission. Someone I’ve had the chance to hear and photograph in the past. I was again left admiring her poise and grasp of the broad and ever challenging issues involved in foreign relations.
Following Mr. Ban’s address were reflections by world leaders and representatives from international organizations. Below are some of the people that I had the opportunity to hear and photograph. Also included are photos of interactive displays for participants, such as the virtual reality setup by the United Nations Regional Information Center (UNRIC) which allowed participants to see the world through the eyes of a refugee. UNRIC is also an organization I have worked for in the past and still shoot events with from time to time.

Now proudly proclaiming itself as Edlogan Wharf. People will soon be moving into this high density, overpriced development.
Looking between the Runnymede Civic Centre and the new Waitrose and Premier Inn development. Part of a series of night photos of my home town. I thought I'd capture some of the new development (Addlestone One) and record how Station Road looks in 2018.
Some developments have brought improvements to this area south of the river, well known for drug junkies and seedy night clubs. Friends of mine live nearby in Bonnington Square. They hate the developments along the river which you can see peeping up behind the railway lines. I was much too kind, giving the title I did, I was told.

Street frontage, 79-121 Canongate in Edinburgh’s ‘Royal Mile’. The gap between the blocks gives access to Reid's Court and the eighteenth century Canongate Manse.
Part of the 1960s redevelopment of slum areas by Edinburgh City Corporation. Three blocks of one and two-bedroom flats, shops and a pub (Jenny Ha’s) by Basil Spence, Glover & Ferguson (1966-9). Rubble, concrete and harl with concrete arcades to front and concrete balconies to rear.
Described as ‘aggressive architecture’ in the Edinburgh volume of the buildings of Scotland. In fact the scale is in keeping with the general streetscape and the way in which the Old Town’s urban pattern has been formed and changed through four centuries.

IIED and pastoralism specialist Saverio Krätli are developing a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) funded by Misereor. The MOOC will provide an entry point for understanding pastoralism, and a valuable tool for navigating the available knowledge. It will be rooted in empirical observation and the latest breakthroughs in research and theoretical reflection.

These houses are at the top end of what has now been called Canal Street. Work has already been started on the opposite bank of the canal, as evidenced by the Heras fencing along the western bank. Residents will be able to wave at each other across the canal. As can be seen, the caisson dam erected for construction of the new canal bridge, has not yet been removed.
