GOAL 10: REDUCED INEQUALITIES

Reducing inequalities involves improving the regulation and monitoring of financial markets and institutions, and encouraging development assistance and foreign direct investment for regions where the need is greatest. Facilitating the safe migration and mobility of people is also key to bridging the widening divide.

The ‘De-Risking and Scaling-Up Investment in Energy Efficient Building Retrofits – Armenia’ project will build the market for energy-efficient building retrofits in Armenia, leading to sizeable energy savings and Green House Gas emission reductions (up to 5.8 million tonnes of Carbon Dioxide in direct and indirect emission savings over the 20-year equipment lifetimes). It will also lead to green job creation and reductions in energy poverty.

Small-scale women farmers in Karatu District, Tanzania are gaining fruitful results in influencing traditionally male-oriented structures of decision-making resource ownership. Merisiana Nade leads the way in papaya production on her family farm. By empowering women to take greater control over household income, CPAR is helping women to support their families with nutritious food on the table, access to health services and paying of school fees.

Earlier this month, the European Commission (EC) held its tenth ‘European Development Days’ (EDD) forum at the Tour & Taxis in Brussels. The stated aim for this annual gathering is to, “bring the development community together each year to share ideas and experiences in ways that inspire new partnerships and innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.” Recognizing a connection between this goal and the United Nation’s (UN) 17 newly adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, also known as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development), the EC made the 2030 Agenda this year’s focus.

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was invited to give the opening remarks and I was on hand with my press pass and camera to cover his address. He observed that the forum was “timely and influential,” and adding that, “[t]he UN counts on your ideas and your partnerships to build a better future for all humanity, for people, planet, peace, and prosperity.” Those four final ‘P’ words, along with ‘partnerships’ make up the 5 ‘areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet’ which the goals target.

Mr. Ban had been introduced by Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Vice-President of the European Commission. Someone I’ve had the chance to hear and photograph in the past. I was again left admiring her poise and grasp of the broad and ever challenging issues involved in foreign relations.

Following Mr. Ban’s address were reflections by world leaders and representatives from international organizations. Below are some of the people that I had the opportunity to hear and photograph. Also included are photos of interactive displays for participants, such as the virtual reality setup by the United Nations Regional Information Center (UNRIC) which allowed participants to see the world through the eyes of a refugee. UNRIC is also an organization I have worked for in the past and still shoot events with from time to time.

Vök Baths, a new development of geothermal baths in Iceland, opened 27 July 2019 on the shores of Lake Urriðavatn, near the city of Egilsstaðir in East Iceland. This region has no other geothermal baths so the creation of Vök Baths on the site of natural hot springs within the lake will be a new tourist attraction for the region. The pools and wooden walkways float in the lake and have water from 38 to 41 centigrade.

The building housing the changing rooms, showers and cafe has a traditional and environmentally friendly turf roof. The architecture is by Reykjavík-based Basalt Architects. The interiors are a collaboration between Basalt Architects and Design Group Italia.

Dragon was an experimental high temperature gas-cooled reactor at Winfrith in Dorset, England, operated by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority.

Its purpose was to test fuel and materials for the European High Temperature Reactor programme, and it was built and managed as an Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development/Nuclear Energy Agency international project.

It operated from 1965 to 1976, and is still in the process of being decommissioned.
