The display home was completed in November 1975 at 1 Colonial Drive, Vermont South and was owned by Macquarie until early 1979.

 

A newer, updated version of the design was opened by Macquarie at 2 Mont Court (Formerly Weeden Drive) in October 1978.

 

Macquarie Builders was established in 1973 as the Australian home building division of international developer Kaiser Aetna and was headquartered at 812 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn.

 

Extract from page 16 of The Age, 27/5/1977:

 

"When you first walk into Macquarie Lodge you know you’ve entered a house of substance. You expect it to have everything, and a bit more, and it lives up to it.

 

Macquarie Lodge is the creme-de-la-creme in the range of houses presented by Macquarie Builders of 812 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn.

 

Priced at $53,380 (on your land), it’s easily recognised from the road as “that two-story house with the shutters on the windows”.

 

The house is displayed at “Pioneer Ridge”, the company’s estate in that golden mile of display homes in Burwood Highway, Vermont (just beyond Springvale Road).

 

Floor plan covers 231.62 square metres (24.9 squares) including verandah. Macquarie names all of its homes after famous Australians, hence the John Eyre, Lawson Manor, Hume Homestead, etc.

 

After inspecting Macquarie Lodge it is east to see why the company chose this man’s name for this house. Although obviously not on the large and elaborate scale of the original Macquarie houses in Sydney it certainly, in its present day, family oriented context, is not put to shame.

 

With four bedrooms, study, two showers and three toilets it’s been designed for the second home buyer who has established himself, now has a number of children and wants to be able to accommodate his family in a little more luxury and convenience.

 

Along the lines of most two storey designs, all the bedrooms are upstairs with the living and entertaining areas on ground level.

 

The house is entered through a solid carved front door opening into a large entry foyer, with the staircase to upstairs directly before you. To the left and through double doors is the living room. The doors have been removed in the display house for convenience.

 

The Macquarie Lodge display house is centrally hated by gas (an extra $1100) but the designers have also included, as standard, a fireplace. It’s one of the first things you notice when you step into the living room.

 

Not so noticeable us the alcove just inside the door to the right which is designed to take a bar. It’s in a sort of “out of your way area” behind you as you enter the room.

 

From the dining room to the kitchen we were surprised at the large walk-in pantry. It actually backs on to the staircase which appears to be the logical place to put it. It means the maximum use of an area which is too often wasted. Although there are plenty of shelves, there is room for more smaller special item shelves to be put in if the lady of the house wants.

 

The kitchen has space for a dishwasher, double bowled sink, wall oven and hot plates and plenty of cupboards. The cupboard doors are teak veneer with timber arched-shape mouldings.

 

A wide and more than equate breakfast bar or servery leads to the family room. Above the bar is an exposed Oregon beam. We thought the living and dining areas being placed on one side of the kitchen and the family room on the other meant a numerous number of activities could take place without everybody disturbing each other.

 

This is obviously what the designer has in mind. For instance if the adults re entertaining with a dinner party, the guests don’t have to know the children are still up, watching television or whatever.

 

The family room opens on to the pergola and decking as well as the dining room. It also opens at the other side to the back yard. Again, if the “oldies” are barbecuing on the deck, the younger ones have their own access to the inside of the house.

 

An opening at the top of the family room leads to a short passage off which is the laundry, with its own outside door, and next to that a powder room.

 

This is a good sized room with toilet, hand basin and a long full mirror with indirect lighting. It is adequate for downstairs requirements for both family or guests.

 

Also off this passage but opposite the laundry is a broom cupboard, which backs onto the coat cupboard which faces the entry foyer.

 

Also off the foyer is the study. This is a feature room of its own. Again it is far enough away from the other living areas of the house to be a quiet private room in which to read or study, or to take a quick visitor without disturbing the rest of the house.

 

Often you don't like to take the fleeting caller "into" the house and a room like this, situated just inside the front door, is ideal.

We thought that for formal entertaining and just day-to-day living the downstairs area is well thought about and well laid out.

 

There are also a number of small things about the house that just give it that "touch", like the canister shelf above the refrigerator space in the kitchen. These are the sort of things you glean over but you are glad you've got them when they are there. They also indicate that space has been put to work wherever possible.

 

The upstairs of the Macquarie Lodge has been similarly well thought about. Bedrooms two and three are on the left-hand side (and have built- in robes), bedroom four is at the back of you after you've climbed the stairs and the master bedroom is to the right.

 

The master bedroom has a walk-in (walk-through) robe. The en suite has two basins (his and hers), toilet and shower tucked away at the other end.

 

This area takes up the entire right-hand side of the upstairs section. The other bedrooms are serviced by a bathroom and toilet at the top of the stairs. The entrances to these rooms are off-centre so that when you walk up the stairs you are not confronted with the toilet, but in fact the wall of the bathroom.

 

We feel the upstairs rooms are of adequate size and airy. Although bedroom four doesn't have a built-in, there is an alcove with a shelf which can be converted if you want. The bathroom has a shower, bath and vanity with cupboards with louvred doors under the vanity benchtop.

 

Throughout the house, except for the double glazed doors leading to and from the living room, the doors are mirror finished. Many are sliding doors.

 

The windows are western red cedar with glazing bars, stained on the inside and painted outside. The display home is in a Glen Iris brick called "Hawthorne Brown".

 

The verandah is included in the initial price, but the double garage, including door from the verandah, would cost an extra $4500.

 

Macquarie Builders, which is a division of Kaiser Aetna Pty. Ltd., still has a number of allotments on its Pioneer Ridge estate at the rear of the display centre.

 

If a buyer wants the Macquarie Lodge built on one of these blocks then, complete with land, concreting, landscaped gardening and central heating, it would cost about $80,000."
