A photo session with my Zorki camera 4K (USSR year 1977) at Parc de la Tête d’Or on Wednesday January 3, 2024.
The Zorki-4K camera was loaded with a 36-exposure Rollei film Superpan 200 (former Agfa Aviphot 200 used in aerial photography) sensitized in the red to 760nm in the near-IR band. Rollei Superpan is coated on a mask-less PET support with anti-halation layers that should removed by two presoaking bathes before the developer.
The camera was equipped with its normal lens Jupiter-8 1:2 f=50mm with a Hoya anti-UV filter (40.5 mm screw-on), a metal shade-hood Genaco (42mm push-on) and a FOCANOX f=5cm external finder (Optique & Précision de Levallois, O.P.L. SA, France). This external finder helps in precise framing in low-light conditions.
Focus was obtained using the camera range-finder and expositions were determined for 200 ISO using an Autometer III Minolta light meter fitted with a 10° finder for selective measurements privileging the shadow areas.
Shutter speeds from 1/125s or 1/60s were used from the full aperture to f/8.

After exposure, the film was revealed using Adox Adonal (Agfa Rodinal) developper at dilution 1+25 and 20°C for 8 min. The film was then digitalized using a Sony A7 body fitted to a Minolta Slide Duplicator installed on a Minolta Auto Bellows III with a lens Minolta Bellow Macro Rokkor 50mm f/3.5. The RAW files obtained were processed without intermediate files in LR and edited to the final jpeg pictures.
About the camera :
This camera was manufactured in 1977 by KMZ company ( Красногорский механический завод, Krasnogorskiy Mechanicheskiy Zavod) located in the Moscow region. KMZ also manufactured the ZENIT SLR's among many other productions. Zorki 4K was produced between 1972 to 1978 and the previous Zorki models were inspired by the Leica II since 1949. This model « Made in USSR" is branded in roman characters, intentionally for exportation. Other Zorki 4K were also branded in Cyrillic as "Зоркий". Zorki 4K was sold basically either with this Jupiter-8 lens 1:2 f=50mm or the Industar lens1:3.5 f=50mm. The Jupiter-8 derived from a Sonnar Zeiss optical formula calculated before WWII for the Zeiss Ikon Contax camera. It fits to the Zorki body using the screwing L39 Leica mount.
Its was sold to me in August 2022 from Austria with its original ever-ready leather bag, a front lens cap and a small shade hood accessory Minolta D42KA. The shade hood and filter of my FOCAFLEX also fit to the Jupiter lens that fits the standard 42 mm push-on and 40.5 screw-on accessories.
About the FOCANOX finder :
The finder FOCANOX is a model-2 produced by O.P.L. SA in France from 1957 (the first model was produced starting from 1954). The box is the original one stating the same serial number. The finder covers the field of the normal lenses f=5cm on any 24x36mm camera.
The FOCANOX finder is of the Albada type, designed by the Dutch inventor L.E.W. van Albada in the 1930’s.An Albada viewfinder is a viewfinder that has a special mirrored lens that creates the illusion of projected viewfinder frame lines when looking through the eye piece. It does this by reflecting white rectangular lines that are printed on a transparent bit of “plastic” near the eye piece. The mirror reflects the frame lines so that they are in focus when looking through the finder at an object. This creates the illusion of a white frame line floating magically around your subject.
The projected lines in the Albada finder were intended to help a photographer to become more aware of the edges of the image and work as an aid to create better composition. A translucent body enlightens the collimation. The FOCANOX was a very clear collimated finder used in subdued light scenes or any general purpose photography.
