Dawn view at the main overlook at Dead Horse State Park near Moab, Utah. A remarkable park, but unfortunately one that these days is determined to scare away photo groups by having outrageous insurance requirements. Oh well, lots of other places to go.

The quality of the airport and perhaps even the affluence of the country easily can be determined by the quality of the motor vehicles on display in the food court. So I set up for this wide shot of ONT 214 passing through Tamagami, but another photographer ended up in my shot at the last moment. Determined to salvage the otherwise perfect photo I spent a solid 4 hours editing out the person. I used a test shot I took before hand to clone stamp over the area he was standing in. If anyone can guess where he was in the shot, you get an internet cookie.

Faneuil Hall, part of the Boston National Historical Park and a well-known stop along the Freedom Trail, has served as a marketplace and meeting hall since 1742. Known as the "Cradle of Liberty", it was the site of several important events of the American Revolution.

"The Samuel Adams statue stands behind Faneuil Hall on Congress Street, and is the work of Miss Anne Whitney. It represents the Revolutionary patriot, clad in the citizen's dress of his period, standing erect, with folded arms, and with a determined look in his finely chiseled face.

The inscription on the monument states "Samuel Adams 1722–1803 – A Patriot – He organized the Revolution, and signed the Declaration of Independence. Governor – A True Leader of the People. Erected A. D. 1880, from a fund bequeathed to the city of Boston.

I still haven't verified if this member of the Sandpiper family is a Willet or not. But I am going to say he is. I captioned a shot of another one as "Willet or won't it?" For this guy, the answer would be yes, He WILL! He was a bird on a mission.

Explore Jan 1/2008 Bald Eagle (Immature) Just learning to fly, note the pine cone he knocked off trying to land on a branch behind him that was to small to support his weight. Happy New Year All, may it bring good health and happyness to you. And some more great images! IMG_8595

A nice morning spent in a professional hide (Sakertour) in the Great plains of Hungary.

It was amazing so watch these small and super fast predators capturing their prey and feeding the young.

I wanted to make this image as I first pre-visualized it before I snapped the shutter (always a good thing to do), so I wanted to process it with a velvety glow while still retaining a subtle sharpness toward the flower center. I pictured it very much unblemished which directed me to remove a few scratches and way too many pollen spots. This little, rather plain pansy, literally enchanted my soul.

“Without a doubt the sense of beauty does not lie determined in the concreteness of an individual beautiful thing or person. Rather its purpose is much more the enchantment of the soul, for there is nothing physical that is not made with the intent of affecting the soul, and there is no soul that does not intend to dazzle everything physical with its sensations.”

A female Pileated Woodpecker.

Identification is determined by a cheek stripe. Males have a bright red stripe, females lack the stripe. This particular female was searching for ants under the tree bark.

MANY THANKS FOR YOUR VISITS, COMMENTS AND FAVES

THEY ARE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!

He has been such a bad dog today! It's been raining, but he has found some mouldy old apple windfalls, and is determined that we will be out there throwing them for him to fetch. He wouldn't come inside, he wouldn't let me dry his feet, he didn't want to do anything that was asked of him - he has learned the power of "No", and, it seems, there is nothing we can do right now. He was so muddy as well...all the floors have needed a good clean as well as the dog himself! It may be, of course that he can't see a lot - he is booked in for a haircut next week....

Gallinago delicata, presumably. (Common Snipes are very similar and cannot be easily determined, and were once considered the same species as the Wilson's.) [Sibley Guide to Birds]

Life at White Sands cannot be easy as the dunes march relentlessly over anything in their path. To find this delicate looking bit of pink, in the early morning light, was such a welcome surprise.

I've seen some amazing cloud formations from this point over the years but still nothing to surpass this particular moment. I remember being quite determined to sit it out come what may but there really was no point in the end the wind and rain making it impossible to continue capturing the progression of the storm and my lens and graduated filter already covered in rain spots. As soon as I saw the fishermen run I too legged it trusting they knew something I didn't!

Thank you for breezing by :)

No. 11.~ We've practically reached the end of the first leg of the trail, the Sassafras Creek Ford, but before we ford the creek, we'll stop by to see the remains of this deteriorating Victorian era, bullet-ridden vehicle sitting to the side of the trail. Why, how and when, it was driven this far down the logging road at creek-side begs the question. Whoever was driving must have been determined to say the least!... And what about those bullet holes? One could conjure up a half a dozen or more imaginative scenarios easily. ... Stories about "Moonshine Ridge Runners and their battles with the Revenuers as well as each other. It really stokes the imagination! I suppose we'll never know the real story behind it and that's OK too. Sometimes it's best to leave some questions unanswered.

On an early AM walk, I found this eagle working on a carcass. The pond has beavers, muskrats and nutria, so I'm not sure which one was prey.

“ I twy to do a handthand! Is this wite Aunties?”

This cow belongs to a friend who lives in Hawaii. Her family have been ranchers for generations. She told me that there is an electric fence in front of this cow, but it has figured out how to reach the "greener grass on the other side," and still avoid getting shocked, by kneeling down and putting her head under the wire! None of the other cattle do it.

Kainoa gave me permission to share this.

Running to the water trough at Polesden Lacey. There is definitely a pecking order among these sheep and I think this one was sneaking in before its turn on an unusually hot day for this time of year.

A Little Blue Heron stares determinedly at the flooded field, willing frogs to appear.

A new storm is bearing down on us even as we rebuild from the outskirts of Helene which left home and some of our favorite natural places forever changed. We’ll work on being safe (and hopefully still be sharing with you all here!) but there may be slowdowns. Already I see a change in behavior by the wildlife here.
