The leather leash I use is 6 feet long (1.8 m), and Blanca knows exactly how long that is and keeps herself comfortably within that range.
However, when she is off leash, she adjusts herself to the much stronger and invisible bond of love. She will vary according to points of interest to investigate, but generally the distance shown in this photo is her self-determined default distance from me when we are walking together. According to the EXIF info, our love bond measures 22.4 meters (73.4 feet).
An unusual sight .. a wombat at the beach. He was pretty determined, moved at quite a pace and swam across a small creek to get there.
A masia in Catalan (or Spanish: masía and Aragonese: pardina) is a type of rural construction common to the east of Spain: Catalonia, Valencian Community, Aragon, Languedoc and Provence (in the south of France). The estate in which the masia is located is called a mas.[1] They are often large but isolated structures, nearly always associated with a family farming or livestock operation.
Through the ages, the materials used to construct masies varied, often determined by their location. In mountainous areas, rough stone was often used, except for doorways, windows and arches, where stone was worked. During the Middle Ages, mud was used as mortar, though later on it was replaced by quicklime or cement. In places where stone was hard to come by, adobe was more common as a construction material.
For the most part, masies are oriented to the south. Constructions older than 16th century have an arched main entrance while those built after the 18th century usually have lintel entrances. Masies were typically constructed with wooden beams placed perpendicular to the facade and covered by tiles. In the Pyrenees and other mountainous areas, the roofing would often be made of slate.
They tended to be at least two-story buildings, with the ground floor reserved for farming tasks and even housing livestock, with the upper floor reserved for the family's living quarters. If there was a floor above that, it would often be used as a granary, or occasionally to house pigeons.
Occasionally, masies include an annexed private chapel.
In modern times, many masies have been converted into residential villas, restaurants, bed and breakfasts, or centers for rural tourism. Some house museums (i.e. Vil·la Joana, Jujol Centre - Can Negre) or have been restored and adapted for cultural uses.
Some early works of the Spanish painter Joan Miró depict his family's own masia as well as Catalan peasants.

This stump was an ancient white cedar. They cling to these cliffs and have been determined to be 600-800 years old. Although protected in this conservation area there is ample evidence along the cliff of those who have succumbed to the elements in this harsh and very exposed location.

I decided to post this as a less “faded” companion to my previous image, Shadow to my Light. This photo was taken in my neighborhood, on one of those winter days when the weather is cloudy and dreary all day and then the sky suddenly lightens along the horizon and the sun makes an appearance just in time to illuminate a beautiful afternoon sunset.
These unexpected sunsets, in a time of year marked by long nights and skies seemingly perpetually arrayed in endless shades of gray, always spark a sense of joy for me. And I can feel a lightness rising in my heart as I watch the sun determinedly burn its way through the clouds and thread the sky with ribbons of light and color in a triumphant celebration of victory over winter’s gloom.

I was determined to wring something painterly from my Helios 44-2 58 amd mounted it on my Nikon D850 using a Nikon PK 11A teleconverter with the thin type m42 adapter. I used a wide open aperture for this shot but did stop down as far as f/5.6 for some shots. I honestly thought I had some wonderful painterly bokeh when checking the LCD.. sadly I didn't notice that the tiny flowerhead of the Stitchwort in all my shots had a sort of glow around them..I have noticed the same thing from other lenses but hadn't used the Helios in years and never on the Nikon. The only way to stop this looking a bit err, a lot spectral imho, was to use the paintbrush in photoshop and carefully paint away the offending glow from just around the white petals and burn the detail back into the petals. The annoying thing was the histogram looked perfect with no blown highlights. The spectral glow simply a feature of that lens...
I started to catch up with everyone yesterday btw but as I cook dinner as my family come on a Wednesday as well as fetching Leo from school and collecting his guitar from his home on the way etc etc, I am still behind as time was short so my apologies....Sue :)

ONE BILLION RISING 2021: RISING GARDENS CAMPAIGN
1 in 3 women across the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. That’s ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. Every February, we rise – in countries across the world – to show our local communities and the world what one billion looks like and shine a light on the rampant impunity and injustice that survivors most often face. We rise through dance to express joy and community and celebrate the fact that we have not been defeated by this violence. We rise to show we are determined to create a new kind of consciousness – one where violence will be resisted until it is unthinkable.

For some reason, people have been telling me what they think of me recently. I've had scary (x2), determined, disciplined, amiable, enthusiastic and anally retentive. Don't I sound like a barrel of laughs 😂 Here I employed determination to get out of bed at 1:30am 😁
Don't think I've posted this one before, the wider view from my amazing morning on Latrigg.

A young American Avocet must quickly learn to find food on its own and this one was foraging actively, albeit with the protective presence of a parent. (In this case, the adult is the male as determined by the slightly upturned bill — that feature is strongly curved in females.) This endearing scene unfolded at Weed Lake near Langdon in southern Alberta, Canada.
The water tower in the middle of the chapel bridge is part of the historic city fortification of Lucerne and is considered a landmark of the city.
The 35-metre-high octagonal and slightly leaning tower complements the city fortification towards the lake. Its construction time cannot be determined with certainty, but certainly after 1262, so even before the chapel bridge built. It has long served as a defensive and watchtower, as well as a cornerstone of the city's fortification. Over the years, he was a city archive, treasury, dungeon and torture chamber.
It is mentioned for the first time in 1367. The existing roof chair dates back to 1339. Since 1939 the tower has been rented to the Lucerne Artillery Association. The tower is rarely open to the public, usually only in summer.
On the lower floor of the tower is a dungeon. Its walls are three meters thick, there are neither windows nor doors. Access is only possible via an opening in the floor of the room above. The dungeon was probably used as a prison until 1759 and then abandoned. On the first floor is the so-called treasury. It served as a prison and as an interrogation and torture chamber until 1759. From 1759 to 1798 the state treasure was kept here, from 1798 to 1803 the room served again as a prison and from 1804 to keep the securities of the community. The second upper floor was until 1759 the place of storage of the Lucerne State Treasury and the State Archives.
When it was discovered in 1758 that money had been stolen for years, it was converted into a prison (until 1802). From 1804 to 1919 he again housed the municipal archive. The striking stork nest on the top of the tower has not been used for over 100 years. The 15-metre-high attic served as an interrogation and torture chamber. Since 1892 alpine sailors have been breeding here in a colony, which is supervised by the Ornithological Society of the City of Lucerne (OGL), since 1959 on behalf of the City Council of Lucerne. The Alpine sailing colony in the water tower is the largest Alpine swift "Tachymarptis melba" colony in central Switzerland.

* In part as an antidote to the dark days of December and to the onset of Christmas. I thought I would retrieve from the archives a few mixed travel shots to post this month . It will be interesting to see how many countries I can fit it in before the end of the year .
This one is from 2019 taken at Dutch Lake in Clearwater, British Columbia . We had been staying in the Wells Grey Park , and while it is very beautiful but does rather lack facilities . The previous evening we had a meal so bad it is still unforgettable. We were determined to find something better though it did mean a long drive out of Wells Grey to the little town of Clearwater. The Painted Turtle restaurant was excellent, good food and we could sit and watch the light fade over Dutch Lake . I checked it out yesterday and it looks like its still going strong

Hello to all my Flickr friends. As many of you know, just over a year ago my beautiful wife Marilyn had a stroke. Her road to recovery has had its ups and downs. Last February, she came home from the rehab hospital in a wheelchair, but by late spring she was able to walk short distances with the aid of a walker. She was gaining strength and more independence with each passing day. Unfortunately, this past November she had two falls, with the second one putting her back in the hospital. But again, her strong determination has resulted in her fighting through the pain as a result of the falls, and the limitations caused by the stroke. Another Christmas and New Year day in hospital, but she will be home soon. I took this photograph over forty years ago when I was shooting and developing black and white film with my Canon 35 mm SLR camera. I love her look of determination, which has been one of her qualities ever since I’ve known her. This determined spirit has been very strong over the course of this past year.
For all of us, this past year has been difficult, but we must always look forward to the New Year and tackle any challenges, good or bad, that come our way. So, to all of you, a very Happy and healthy New Year.
My participation on Flickr will continue to be limited in the coming new year, but hopefully by the summer I will return on a more regular basis.
The film that I used for this photograph was Kodak Tri-X pushed to 1600 ISO using Diafine developer to process the negatives.
