The Made in Portland walking tour was developed by Museum of Contemporary Craft and organized by Know Your City for Design Week Portland, 2014.

“Portland has always been a bit different. And within the last decade or so, the rest of the world has taken notice. Forever pushing forward, our compact city continues to emerge as a dynamic center of creativity, composed of a vital community of designers and makers at its core. We create. We collaborate. We try new things. We grow.” - DWP

This program came out of a desire to explore Portland’s maker culture – the industrial legacy that led us to where we are today, and the current entrepreneurial spirit and grassroots systems of support that allow design and craft to thrive. How is what is made here and how it is made informed by the history, geography, and infrastructure of Portland? In turn, how do our artisanal goods and the culture that supports them help produce the identity – the zeitgeist – of place?

This walking tour visited with makers and business owners in the neighborhood who represent the diversity within the design field – from boat builders to distillers, large factories to independent designers. The tour became an opportunity to discuss Portland’s industrial past, and how the city grew alongside its regional industries. Highlighting timber, steel, and textiles, the intent of this tour is to bring the past forward, examining how legacy and tradition have a role in giving shape to the present.
