Yea, though Haringey families walk through the valley

of the shadow of Cllr Claire Kober's cuts, developers

and starchitects fear no retrieval. For thou art chosen

and public cash shall always comfort thee.

The photo above is part of the scale model proudly displayed at the publicly funded McAslan shop at 451-453 High Road, Tottenham. The model was also a freebie for the world renowned starchitect. We are told it cost some £18,000.

Despite horrendous cuts to Haringey frontline services there is always spare cash to scatter like confetti over a few privileged projects. So we also heard that - at a cost of another £3000 - the model would be shipped to Cannes on the French Riviera to attend MIPIM - International Real Estate Property Market. (Le marché international des professionnels de l’immobilier).

(N.B. Update: I later heard that plans to take the model to MIPIM were scrapped. It would be nice to think this was a response to criticism. But I suspect the reason might be that the model is not completely accurate.)

Haringey is not alone in frittering away public money in this way. In March 2015 many senior officers (staff) and Leaders (councillors) from local councils across the country will join this jolly junket with the "developer community".

In March 2014 two people attending MIPIM on behalf of Haringey Council had their air fares and hotel bills paid by "sponsors" - commercial interests who stand to benefit from the deals made. Haringey Cllr Alan Strickland was lunched and dined by Arup on the yacht Clara One. Sadly, in response to a Freedom of information Act request, Haringey told me they could not obtain the menu.

In Cannes in March 2015, elected representatives of local councils and their staff will again discuss deals to sell-off publicly owned land. In some cases this will result in demolition of their residents' homes and businesses. It will probably generate lucrative work for architects and substantial profits for developers.

In exchange, elected representatives are likely to receive warm promises that development projects will "kickstart", "unlock", or be "a catalyst" for "regeneration", "renaissance" , "revitalisation" , "mixed communities"; and other largely meaningless buzzwords. Noise which I think of as 'regenero-burble'.

It may not occur to many of the elected councillors that there are lessons to be learned from both the fabled and historical past. That it's not always the best plan to take such promises, proffered deals and gifts at face value. Whether in the form of wooden horses, strings of beads, bags of magic beans, or crocks of gold at the end of the rainbow.

I cross dimensions unseen to ride on the axis of dreams

As I drift on through the dark corridors of post mortem

The only light in the darkness

Is the flame that burns

In my soul

try it you will get hooked...

I just came across this old 3½ x 5 inch photo and decided to scan it for my flickr friends. Here I am working on my little Mac SE, trying to do something in a very simple b+w paint program. In the far right background is the 1988 calendar I designed for Sloan Paper Company. Just under my closed typewriter I can see the calendar sheet reads "November." Just behind my Mac you can see my old Apple Imagewriter, dot matrix, printer. I still had a lot of hair back then, but it was beginning to thin. I was forty-six years of age when I made this self-timed shot.

I like to punch a room with a single bold color, but all neutral tones are beautiful, too. Love the natural tone on tone: Camel, Black, White + Metallic Grey.

Colors: Black, Purple, Lavender, Silver Grey + White

Who doesn't want to feel like royalty on their wedding day! And the best hue to accentuate royalty is a purple.

Here's a little history on the color purple, and why it's simply known as the symbol for "nobility." Back in the medieval times, blue dyes (red + blue pigments when mixed, produced purple) were so expensive that only the wealthy, or the aristocracy could afford it. Naturally over time, the deep-bluish purple became the wardrobe color of Kings, and is often known as "royal purple". Not only is the purple hue associated with royalty, but damask and brocade silk prints were common, too, in the aristocratic wardrobe due to its high production costs.

So for this wedding inspiration board, I had to pair the royal purple shade with the ornate, but sophisticated print. Inspired by the damask pillow design with its varying shades of purple, I knew the event colors had to be black, royal purple, and the secondary accent colors to be lavender and a light silver grey. I could definitely see the damask pillow in a modern, white seated lounge area for the cocktail hour and post-dinner celebration. For the tablescape, it will be a combination of pewter-like drinking vessels, crystals, white silver-rimmed plates, silver chargers & candelabras, black/white damask votives, bunches of purple hydrangeas & irises, and all set on white runners and black linens.

And other great embellishments to make yourselves feel like true royalty: how about a customized monogrammed aisle runner, empty oval baroque frames to get your cameo portraits shot by the photographer, and invest in good lighting to set off the whole environment.

New & Improved....

What once was yucky, smelly commercial carpet is now pretty, shiny painted concrete floors. Walls are painted neutral greys & greens and everything (almost) has it's own place. This side of the office has most of the retail merchandise displayed where I an keep it organized and make sure I have it full.
