Freshly fallen snow clings to the side of a red 1967 Chevrolet Impala parked in Blanchardville, Wisconsin. From a distance I thought the pattern reminded me of Poland's flag.

Crystal covered trees outside of Big Sandy, Montana.

Christmas in Montana was beautiful, but lonely. I think it was the first time I ever spent the holiday away from friends and family. The only family member I had this Christmas was Steve...the cat. Which is just as well. He is real easy to buy for.

Given my situation here on Christmas day I decided to head out and do some photographing. What else would you expect?

Photographing on Christmas morning can be rather peaceful. It is the only time of the year when roads are absolutely empty. Thanksgiving morning is a close second. The chances of bumping into anyone early on Christmas morning is somewhere between slim and nil. Of course that's often the case every day on the country roads of Montana regardless what day it is. Christmas only makes it virtually certain you won't cross paths with anyone. Virtually.

I decided to scout some photo opportunities along the dirt roads along the perimeter of the Bear Paw Mountains south and west of Havre. I was absolutely convinced I was alone. I was 70 miles south of the tiny town of Chinook and 50 miles west of the even smaller town of Big Sandy. The sunlight was beautiful, the air was warm (40 degrees warmer than what I left behind in Havre), and there was nature all around. For a moment I forgot I was alone on Christmas day. There could not have been more than a dozen or so people between me and Havre at that moment here on the quiet Montana plains in the shadow of the mountains. And it was nice. Lonely, but nice.

Later that morning, when most people were probably making final preparations for their Christmas meal, I came flying around a bend in the road at a speed entirely too fast for the snow. That's when I spotted two trucks parked nose-to-nose in the middle of my road. Luckily I maintained control of my slipping and sliding truck as I shot past them on this narrow stretch called Cow Island Road. "Should I stop?" I asked myself. We were, after all, in the middle of nowhere. They might need help.

I put my truck it in reverse, slung my arm over the top of the seat, and piloted my trusty steed in reverse back to the spot in the middle of the road where these two trucks were locking horns. I rolled down my window and asked, "Do you need any help?"

Just then one of them emerged from behind the trucks, hoisted a can of beer into the air, and said, "No sir! Just two friends enjoying a beer...."

"....in the middle of nowhere at 11 o'clock on Christmas morning? I'll be damned." I said, finishing his sentence. Both men chuckled.

Even here, at the intersection of empty and lonely in the middle of nowhere Montana (where they have more deer than people), I found two buddies, who probably live more than 20 miles apart, and they were merrily sharing some Christmas cheer.

And then they offered me a beer.

I'll be damned.

Hand drawn flower illustrations by the "Audubon of Botany", Mary Vaux Walcott (1860–1940). Mary was a female American artist and naturalist known for her almost a thousand watercolors of North American wildflowers. She started experimenting with painting flowers at the age of eight. During her family summer trips to the Rocky Mountains of Canada, she developed her interest in botany and painting. Mary Vaux Walcott and her brother also studied mineralogy. Her success in painting a rare blooming mountain arnica encouraged her to concentrate on botanical illustrations. Mary Vaux Walcott also became an active mountain climber and photographer because she spent many years exploring the difficult terrain in the Canadian Rockies. As a remarkable botanist artist and an unconventional woman, she was elected as the president of the Society of Woman Geographers in 1933. We have digitally enhanced hundreds of her wildflower watercolor paintings into high resolution printable quality. They are free to download and use under the creative commons license.

A colorful tent at the Great Northern Fair in Havre, Montana.

It's that time of year once again. All over America 'tis the season for carnivals and county fairs. Havre, Montana is no exception.

I looked forward to the fair this year. I didn't know what to expect since this was my first Montana fair, but I hoped it would be a bit different than what I was accustomed to back home.

In many regards the fair in Havre was no different than the carnivals and fairs I experienced back home. About the only real difference was the fact that a rodeo was the seminal event. We don't ride cows in Wisconsin--we milk them. A demolition derby usually takes top billing back there. Then again, Havre has one of those, too. There weren't as many 4-H exhibits, and nor was there a single dairy cow in sight, but there were many more people...impressive given the fact that there are far fewer people in these parts.

The carnival rides were about the same, which caused me to wonder why someone isn't designing something new. Wouldn't it be fun dreaming up new fair rides? Then again, maybe familiarity is what makes the carnival so neat.

The food exhibits were kind of what I expected, too. What surprised me is that this tiny fair in Montana even had fried cheese curds! Then again, there isn't much they don't fry at the county fair. But imagine that...there isn't even a dairy farm for hundreds of miles! And most of the people around here don't delight in the taste of a good slice of cheese like they do back in Wisconsin. They were better than the average fried cheese curd served in the taverns back home, but nothing close to what one would expect to receive at the Green County Fair in Monroe, Wisconsin. It's good to know that the Green Bay Packers, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Liberace aren't the only exports known far beyond Wisconsin's borders.

A local group also sold another unhealthy concoction called a "scone." It was a thick slab of fried dough about the size of a loose leaf notebook. A double layer of extra absorbent paper towels was necessary to carry it because it was smothered in butter, honey, cinnamon, and sugar. Never mind the fact that it in no way it resembled a coffee house scone; it was still mighty delicious. And I didn't have the heart to tell them.

There will be other fairs in Montana between now and Labor Day--each of them unique in their own way; but most will share obvious similarities. Kids will run through the midway laughing and having fun. Parents will chase after them and shelve their diets for a day or two so they can enjoy some of the foods of their youth. And for a while, as the rest of the country still reels from never-ending saga that is the recession, everyone at that moment will forget about it all and try to have some fun.

As for me, the fair was a chance to feel like I was back home again. No, the cheese curds didn't taste the same and I missed walking through the dairy exhibits, but there were enough similarities for me to forget for a moment that I was a thousand miles from home.
