Art déco vs. Jugendstil (Art nouveau)
Jugendstil und Art déco sind zwei bestimmende Strömungen des 20. Jahrhunderts, die alle Elemente der visuellen Kultur beeinflusst haben – von der bildenden Kunst und Design über die Architektur bis hin zur grafischen Kunst.
Während der Jugendstil elegante Kurven und langgeschwungene Linien feiert, stehen im Art déco spitze Winkel und geometrische Formen im Fokus.
Auch wenn die beiden Strömungen häufig miteinander verwechselt werden, bezeichnen sie doch vollständig unterschiedliche Richtungen der modernen Kunst.
Beide Stile eint jedoch ihre enorme Reichweite und die Tatsache, dass sie die Zeit widerspiegeln, in der sie entstanden sind. Jugendstil und Art déco befassen sich mit der vorhandenen kulturellen Stimmung und den Themen der Gesellschaft, weshalb sie so viele Aspekte der heutigen visuellen Kunst geprägt haben.
Jugendstil
Der Jugendstil entstand in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Die „neue Kunst“ bzw. „Art nouveau“ wird häufig als die erste moderne Kunstrichtung bezeichnet, die den Weg für die darauffolgende Avantgarde ebnete. Inspirationsquelle des Jugendstils – geboren aus dem Wunsch, alle Kunst zu vereinen und die bestehenden Grenzen zwischen bildender und dekorativer Kunst zu öffnen – ist weniger die Vergangenheit, sondern vielmehr die Gegenwart und das Versprechen der Zukunft. Den Blick auf kommende Zeiten gerichtet, ließ der Jugendstil alle Beschränkungen der traditionellen Kunst hinter sich und kennzeichnete einen neuen Stil für das neue Jahrhundert.
Die industriellen Ursprünge des Jugendstils
Die Geburtsstunde des Jugendstils kommt zu einer Zeit der Industrialisierung, als die moderne Identität Europas durch eine arbeitssame Einstellung und eine stetig wachsende Steigerung der Massenproduktion definiert wurde. Der Jugendstil begrüßte die industrielle Revolution zwar, verwehrte sich aber auch gegen sie: Man feierte die Kunstfertigkeit und das Können des Künstlers bzw. der Künstlerin, bediente sich jedoch auch stilisierter Formen der Automatisierung und Industrialisierung.
Farben und Bildmotive
Insbesondere die Natur als Inspiration macht den Jugendstil aus. In Kunstwerken, in der Architektur und im Design des Jugendstils findet sich mit seinen sanften Kurven, anmutigen Übergängen und tanzenden Linien häufig ein Widerhall der Formen und Strukturen organischer Gebilde.
Jedes Designelement fügt sich nahtlos in eine harmonische Ästhetik. Den Formen und Linien scheint eine größere Bedeutung zuzukommen als den Farben; die neutrale Farbpalette dient im Wesentlichen dazu, die Komposition und Muster zu unterstreichen.
Die Farbgestaltung ist kein definierendes Merkmal des Jugendstils, auch ist sie nicht besonders auffällig oder markant. Im Jugendstil werden vorwiegend gedeckte Farben verwendet: von Terracotta und Senfgelb über Olivgrün bis hin zu sanften Blautönen.
„Der Kuss“ von Gustav Klimt
„Der Kuss“ von Gustav Klimt wird häufig als eines der berühmtesten Beispiele des Jugendstils genannt. Das Gemälde entstand in der späteren Phase der ersten Welle dieser Kunstströmung und enthält organische Formen, gemusterte Motive und eine dekorative Qualität, die den Konventionen des Wiener Jugendstils entspricht, einer lokalen Variante des Art nouveau.
Das Kunstwerk kennzeichnet außerdem eine entscheidende Zeit in der Entwicklung des Jugendstils, als sich die einst lineare Kunstbewegung aufteilte und die zukünftigen Avantgarde-Bewegungen beflügelte.
Art déco
Nach 30-jähriger Vorherrschaft des Jugendstils ebbte dessen Faszinationskraft ab und die Kunstwelt wandte sich neuen aufstrebenden Stilrichtungen zu.
Der Art déco trat erstmals 1920 in Erscheinung. Ein großer Impulsgeber war hierfür die Weltausstellung des Kunstgewerbes und des Industriedesigns 1925 in Paris. Zunächst wurde die Strömung nach dieser bedeutsamen Ausstellung benannt und erst in den 1960er Jahren erhielt sie die Bezeichnung „Art déco“.
Technik als Inspirationsquelle
Elegant, stromlinienförmig und symmetrisch: Art-déco-Kunst ist dekorativ und ausgewogen. Vieles an der Optik des Art déco war von der Technik inspiriert, mit Schwerpunkt auf vertikale Linien, Zickzack-Muster und rechteckige Formen.
Darin spiegelt sich das Aufkommen der maschinellen Produktion sowie der Fortschritt in der Materialbearbeitung, unter anderem Aluminium, Edelstahl, Glas und Kunststoff. Der Art-déco-Stil verkörperte den rasanten, kühnen und aufregenden Geist des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts.

Aufstieg des Art déco und Zurückdrängung des Jugendstils
Der Art déco markiert einen Wandel, während gleichzeitig an bestimmten zentralen Themen der Jugendstilbewegung festgehalten wurde. In vielerlei Hinsicht entsprang der Art déco aus dem abnehmendem Interesse am Jugendstil.
Art déco hält an der Wertschätzung der modernen Handwerkskunst fest und verband die kreative Fingerfertigkeit mit technischem Fortschritt.
Der Art déco war zudem beeinflusst von der ägyptischen, aztekischen und mittelamerikanischen Kunst, die während dieses Jahrhunderts von der westlichen Welt nach und nach entdeckt wurde.
Einflüsse der Avantgarde
Im Gegensatz zum Jugendstil entwickelte sich der Art déco zu einer Zeit, als die Kunstszene von der Avantgarde dominiert wurde.
Der Kubismus war mit seinen scharfen Kanten und seiner geometrischen Ästhetik ebenfalls sehr einflussreich, ebenso wie die Faszination mit dem Maschinen- und Industriezeitalter.
Stilistische Elemente des Art déco finden sich zudem in der gewinkelten und dynamischen Anmutung futuristischer Kunstwerke.
Der Art déco verband wie kaum eine andere Stilrichtung Kunst, Design und Architektur und fand insbesondere in den USA zahlreiche Anhänger. Berühmte Gebäude in New York, wie das Chrysler Building und das Empire State Building, verkörpern den Art-déco-Stil und zählen zu den bekanntesten Exemplaren moderner Architektur.
Aktuelle Trends im Art déco und Jugendstil
Im Art déco und Jugendstil kamen und gingen immer wieder unterschiedliche Trends. Beide Stilrichtungen sind jedoch nach wie vor ein wichtiger Bestandteil der modernen Designkunst.
Beispiele für Jugendstil und Art déco finden sich in ganz Europa und in den the USA. Sie sind ungebrochen beliebt im Innen- und Möbeldesign, aber auch in der Ölmalerei und Keramik. Auf der ganzen Welt bedienen sich Künstler*innen der Stilelemente des Art nouveau und Art déco. Sie werden adaptiert, kombiniert oder auch treu übernommen. Dies macht deutlich, dass beide Stilrichtungen auch in der Gegenwartskunst und -kultur eine vorherrschende Rolle spielen.

Oldies but Goldies
Die blaue Glasscheibe ist als Designelement für den Garten gedacht und steht im Freigelände eines Baumarkts. Der kleine helle Punkt ist die durchscheinende Sonne.

A minimalist, high‑key scene inside the Van Gogh Museum, where sweeping curves, bright surfaces, and clean architectural lines shape the experience of moving upward. The staircase forms a graceful geometric rhythm—glass, steel, and soft light working together to create an almost floating impression. A solitary figure ascends through the airy, sculptural space, adding scale and contrast to the museum’s modern interior design. In this moment, structure becomes serenity, and ascent becomes contemplation.
Fun fact: The Van Gogh Museum's newer architectural sections were designed to emphasize openness and movement, using curved staircases and large illuminated surfaces to guide visitors seamlessly between exhibits.

a motorcycle hums through the lattice of a morning reflection. two riders suspended in motion, framed by pattern and chance — and in the background, someone walks on, unaware of the quiet geometry unfolding behind the glass.
Making of, one of the ideas, the inside of one sqaure would fullfill the requirements for size of 75 x 75 mm for Macro Mondays size restriction. Therefore the title.
Other then this, fine dark chocolodad, pralinees from a well know german brand, and not eaten. So close to food fotography, but not some extra calories , not yet eaten.

In architecture, a vault is a self-supporting arched form, usually of stone or brick, serving to cover a space with a ceiling or roof.
The ribs of a fan vault are of equal curvature and rotated at equal distances around a central (vertical) axis, forming the conoid shape which gives rise to the name.
The initiation and propagation of this design element and innovation is strongly associated with England - not seen in the churches of continental Europe. It developed in the 14th century as a shell form that was inserted into existing Norman or Romanesque structures as an alternative to the Gothic arch.
Bath Abbey is located in the English county of Somerset. There has been a place of Christian worship on this site for well over a thousand years.

Has been a museum for several decades. Amtrak 3x per week beginning 1991. Art Deco design is acknowledged to this day as best example of such railway architecture.
