Dymaxion Deployment Units

Camp Evans

Wall Township, NJ

Of special interest is a collection of a dozen futuristic buildings designed by architect Buckminster Fuller. Fuller manufactured around 200 DDU's (Dymaxion Deployment Units) during 1940-41, and while most of the circular metal buildings have disappeared, approximately a dozen of them survive at Camp Evans. Preserved mostly through neglect, the buildings originally were linked to Radar research. You can access at least four of the unlocked buildings located in the back of the property. ~ [Paul McLeod, 03/31/2011]

Camp Evans

Wall Township, NJ

Camp Evans is a former military base associated with Fort Monmouth, in the U.S. State of New Jersey. It is located in Wall Township, although it is often said to be located in Belmar (its postal zip code is Belmar's, although it lies outside the borough). The property overlooks the Shark River.

Camp Evans is named after Lt. Col. Paul Wesley Evans of the Signal Corps, who worked in the development of wireless transmission at the Belmar Station in the early 20th century. After World War I, Evans was reassigned to the Panama Canal Zone as the presiding Signal Officer.

The original buildings were built by the American Marconi Company under a contract to the J.G. White Engineering Corp. between 1912 and 1914 as part of Guglielmo Marconi's "Wireless Girdle" around the Earth. It was then known as the Belmar Station.

The Belmar Station served as Marconi's receiving station, "Duplexed" with his New Brunswick high power transmitting station. An operator in Wall keyed the New Brunswick transmitter, 32 miles to the northwest, through a landline connection. Edwin Armstrong and David Sarnoff tested and perfected the regenerative circuit at the Wall site, on the night of January 31/February 1, 1914.

We’re continuing to ensure we’re prepared to keep you safe at the thousand-plus large-scale events that we police in Greater Manchester every year with the specialist training of hundreds of our officers.

Our rigorous week-long public order training programme has been nationally-recognised as properly equipping us for a whole variety of events – such as sporting fixtures, festivals, carnivals, and protests – to maintain order in circumstances where there is a risk to ourselves and the public.

Each year we police around 1200 such events in GM that mostly pass without any significant incident; however, we ensure that in the rare instances issues do arise, we have officers specially trained in maintaining order with the tactics and skills to keep the wider public and our officers safe.

As well as putting 500 new officers through their paces every year, we have many more experienced officers who also go through the intensive course to refresh their knowledge and skills so that we have the necessary number of qualified cops to be deployed to such big events.

Chief Inspector Kirsten Buggy, of our Specialist Operational Training, People and Development Branch said: “All our officers will police major events given the nature of serving for one of the largest communities in the country, but we also ensure that a high amount of those officers is trained in using the enhanced tactics that may be needed on some occasions.

“Part of the training our officers do here is very-much a last resort and can seem excessive to some, but we’ve seen in the past how valuably important it is that we can call on such an insurance policy for the rare situations where public order needs to be regained and maintained to keep you safe.

“This is the kind of policing that goes to show just how brave and committed our officers are at being on the front line and doing what they can to keep communities safe from those who may look to cause harm, and year-on-year we’re making sure that more of our officers gain the experience that this vital training can offer to the benefit of us all.”

We’re currently recruiting more officers than ever – fancy joining our team too? Find out how you can here: www.gmp.police.uk/recruitment

U.S. Air Force Capt. Matt Kettler, a C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft pilot assigned to the 17th Airlift Squadron, Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, conducts preflight checks during an Emergency Deployment Readiness Exercise at Green Ramp, Pope Army Airfield, N.C., Jan. 27, 2015. Five hundred U.S. Army paratroopers from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, were airdropped onto Wright Army Airfield, Fort Stewart, Ga., from five C-17 transport aircraft 18 hours after notification. As the nucleus of the nation's Global Response Force, the 82nd Airborne Division provides a strategic hedge for combatant commanders with a responsive, agile and operationally significant response force that is flexible in size and composition to accomplish missions anywhere in the world. Air Mobility Command's participation also illustrates the critical partnership between Mobility Air Forces and the U.S. Army by exercising Joint Forcible Entry: the capability of rapidly introducing forces into hostile environments to conduct operations—whether combat or humanitarian support. 10th Combat Aviation Brigade Soldiers leave for deployment Oct. 10, 2019.

From the Museum's website:

The failure of the General Dynamics F-111B to meet US Navy requirements for an advanced carrier-based air-superiority fighter led to a new design contest which was won by Grumman with its variable-geometry, two-seat, twin-engine aircraft designated the F-14. Named the Tomcat, procurement began in 1969 for 700 aircraft. Deliveries to the Navy began in June 1972, with the initial deployment of operational carrier squadrons in 1974.

The ability to sweep its wings aft 43 degrees, coupled with twin 21,000-lb-thrust engines enabled the F-14 to achieve speeds in excess of twice the speed of sound.

The F-14, with its Phoenix air-to-air missiles, coupled with airborne early-warning aircraft radar, was able to simultaneously intercept, engage and destroy up to five incoming enemy aircraft out to distances in excess of one hundred miles from a carrier task force. The F-14 was later used in the ground-attack role, as well.

Reduction of force requirements and concurrent cuts in defense spending necessitated the gradual replacement of the F-14s by F/A-18s in 2006.
