Let's Do 52/Week 4: Unexpected Perspective

Crops in: August

Rootstock: St. Julien A (semi-dwarf)

Tangy orange American variety, delicious eaten straight off the tree, preserves well and makes wonderful jam. The beautiful pink-tinged flowers in early spring are selffertile. For best results plant in a sunny sheltered spot - ideally against a south or south-west facing wall.

This apricot tree is growing on a semi-dwarf rootstock, ideal for the average garden. Apricots need a sunny site and a neutral soil to crop well, a ph. of 6.0 - 7.5 is ideal.

Pollination: Self-fertile.The major cause of poor pollination is bad weather at blossom time, limiting the activity of insects, particularly in the case of apricots which usually bloom in February or March. In a bad year a soft paint brush can dramatically improve results.

Planting distance: 4m (13ft)

Approximate height 4m (13ft) after 10 years.

Nous sommes arrivés en France! We are staying in this lovely country for two months this spring. Our primary residence is Lyon, the third largest city in France, located to the southwest. It is a historical, cultural, and very picturesque city founded as the Roman city of Lugdunum, spread out over two hills and two rivers -- the Saône and Rhône.

With side trips to locations as diverse as Paris, Perpignan, Aix-en-Provence, and more, Steve and I aim to get our fill of a country neither of us has seen in a decade, and enjoy the cuisine, culture, language practice, scenery, and generally, la vie quotidienne.
