The Samuel MacKenzie Elliott House, also known as the 69 Delafield Place House, was built around 1840. This beautifully proportioned stone house was built as a real-estate investment by Scottish-born Samuel MacKenzie Elliott, who began purchasing property in the area that it became known as Elliottville.

Achieving fame as one of America's earliest oculists and eye surgeons, Elliott's New York practice boasted patients like John Jacob Astor, Peter Cooper, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Horace Greeley. Active in the Abolitionist movement, he reputedly harbored many slaves in his cellar, which was set up with a special fireplace for cooking, and organized the Seventy-ninth Highlanders, a regiment of volunteers, to fight for the North during the Civil War.

The house itself is an excellent example of country Gothic Revival architecture. Constructed of locally quarried random stone. One of more than 22 designed by the doctor, they were all executed in the same style of similar design. The walls measure inches in thickness and today, the Elliott House is covered in trumpet vine and Viriginia creeper, enhacing the picturesque quality. The house has eight spacious rooms, an attic and a cellar. A large entrancement at the gable end of the building is framed by diamond-shaped colored glass sidelights in blue and organe, and crowned by a transom displaying glasswork in a fan pattern. The gables are trimmed with attractive, scalloped, wooden vergeboards. The windows have sandstone lintels and are double-hung wit the wide vertical central muntins, simulating casements. The second floor of the two and a half story residence is accented by the Gothic pointed arch window, which once provided light for the attic.

The Samuel MacKenzie Elliott House was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1998.

Auditorium in the "Amusements" building. (ca 1920) Entertainment was provided weekly to the staff and patients of the sanatarium (bands, speakers, movies, skits put on by staff, etc.) Male and female patients had their own section to sit in as well as attending staff.

The following is an excerpt from the Patient rulebook 1944: "Male and female patients are allowed to sit together at church services, movies, entertainments, and in the dining room. In the Amusement Hall, paitents are asked to occupy the center section of seats. Petting parties and improper conduct will not be tolerated and anyone who violates this rule will be refused social privileges or discharged."

This is a cottage that housed young tuberculosis patients or children of TB patients at Statesan. They went through the same regimen as adults. The children's cottage was closed to patients in the 1920's or so and after that it was used for staff housing.

Two of the men's cottages at Wisconsin State Sanatorium at Wales Wisconsin for the treatment of Tuberculosis. Men and women were kept in cottages in different parts of the Sanatarium and didn't get to mingle much if at all. The cottage to the rear in this photo was given up for staff housing shortly after the sanatarium opened because it was up on a small rise and the tuberculosis patients found it hard to climb the hill.

Kitchen workers on holiday at Wisconsin State Tuberculosis Sanatorium also known as Statesan. Must have been quite the holiday to warrant the paper hats. I've been unsuccessful in finding where this structure was in relation to the rest of the sanatorium. It may be the building I referred to in a photo taken 10 years earlier. (see my other photos).

Main kitchen and dining hall (refectory) at Wisconsin State Sanatorium at Wales just as it was being completed in 1907. Had a large dining room to the left (refectory) and kitchen facilities to the left. Staff housing on the second floor. Torn down in about 1990.

Two employees of the tuberculosis sanatorium in 1926. The one on the left was referred to as "Hawley" in other photos. No info on the person

on the right. Not sure what part of the institution they worked, but do not believe they were nurses. They were possibly orderlies or kitchen workers.

Edmée Elizabeth Monica Dashwood, née de la Pasture (9 June 1890 – 2 December 1943), commonly known as E. M. Delafield, was a prolific English author.

She is best known for her largely autobiographical Diary of a Provincial Lady, which took the form of a journal of the life of an upper-middle class Englishwoman living mostly in a Devon village of the 1930s.

In sequels, the Provincial Lady buys a flat in London, travels to America, attempts to find war-work during the Phoney War, and tours the Soviet Union.

Original Infirmary/hospital at Wisconsin State Sanatorium at Wales. Later used for Nurse housing. Torn down in about 1991.

The West Point Ordnance Compound was completed in 1840 to house the offices, laboratories and quarters for West Point's ordnance detachment as well as guns used for cadet instruction. In this building from 1840 until 1913, cadets were taught the many technical aspects of ordnance and gunnery in support og their military education.

The Ordnance Compound was designed by Major Richard Delafield, who served as superintendent from 1838 to 1845m and again from 1856 to 1961. Architecturally, it was one of the first examples of the stone Gothic Revival style seen in other buildings at West Point and at other military institutions. At West Point, its most significant influence was on the Cadet Chapel, built in 1910 and considered one of the nation's most important historic structures.

Since 1913 the compound has served a variety of needs. It has provided a workshop for creation of instructional ordnance models, storage for ordnance equipment and more recently has become the activities center for the Cadet First Class.

Experimental ordnance and standard issue cannon have been installed in from of the compound. Some of these guns have been used for cadet instruction for more than 150 years.

West Point, NY

Women's cottages at Wisconsin State Sanatorium. The cottage in the upper right (Kewaunee Cottage) was originally designed for children with the center area being used for school classes. Having child patients at the sanitorium was stopped at sometime in the early years. By 1926 this cottage was used to house female employees. I'm not quite sure what the playing area to the bottom right is. Possibly a badmitton court? The road at the upper right led to Lapham Hill (highest point in Waukesha County) and a road from there led to the town of Delafield which is about 2 miles to the north.

On the eve of the Packer's stellar Superbowl victory, I took some rollers of my car as a "farewell". The car is now parted, and I will soon part with it. I hope these pictures can do the car justice, as the car has done so much for me over the past 3 years. Enjoy! More shots to come ;)

I have no idea why they decided to call this strip mall Wal-Mart Center, other than Walmart was up the hill. The strip mall actually has quite a bit of chains located here. DQ Grill & Chill, Dollar Tree, Petco, AutoZone, Subway, Office Max, and Rocky Rococo.
