There is just something about the older cameras, whether it's less MP's that make for a better artistic interpretation [softer look] or what I just cannot say.

This 14.6 mile railroad line, known as the "Savatran Rail Spur", was completed from Delafield (near McLeansboro) through Macedonia, Illinois in 2011. It terminates with a loading loop north of the Akin Junction on CN's existing Edgewood Cutoff line.

The Savatran train of empty hoppers are about a 1/4 the way down the branch to the Sugar Camp Mine where it will run through the loading loop for another load of coal. It will return east in the night across the Evansville Western Railway and head down another spur to the generating plant at Abee, Indiana where again it runs around the big circle to feed the giant electric monster. And the process continues......non stop. The Evansville Western participates also in this short haul as part of the railroads bread and butter making them a really big short line.

No more than a minute after taking this photo from the lookout tower it started to rain cats and dogs. I ran back to the truck as I was getting hammered with rain and waited out the storm. I wanted to go back up to the top of the lookout tower and catch the backside of the storm once it passed. I did just that, but the storm's backside wasn't that entertaining. Then I spotted some humidity drifting in the forest below so I quickly made a mad dash back down the tower and wandered through the forest for awhile. It smelled so, so good.

What Makes Rain Smell So Good?

If you're too lazy to click the link, here's the gist of the article:

"In that study and subsequent research, they determined that one of the main causes of this distinctive smell is a blend of oils secreted by some plants during arid periods. When a rainstorm comes after a drought, compounds from the oils—which accumulate over time in dry rocks and soil—are mixed and released into the air. The duo also observed that the oils inhibit seed germination, and speculated that plants produce them to limit competition for scarce water supplies during dry times.

These airborne oils combine with other compounds to produce the smell. In moist, forested areas in particular, a common substance is geosmin, a chemical produced by a soil-dwelling bacteria known as actinomycetes. The bacteria secrete the compound when they produce spores, then the force of rain landing on the ground sends these spores up into the air, and the moist air conveys the chemical into our noses."

Constructed in 1907, the hatchery stands as a reminder of Wisconsin's fishing heritage. In the early 20th century concern over fish deletion led to the creation of a fish propagation program. The fieldstone building contained two concrete tanks for hatching walleye-pike eggs. The grounds included six holding ponds; two were used for hatching bass eggs.

Boats below waited hours for the show, as they will to funnel off the lake afterwards.

CSXT 2502 leads what I believe was the J731 southbound through Enfield, IL. Back then it was a one train a day operation. Northbound (geographically west) out of Evansville, IN as far as needed and then back to Evansville the next day. This was once the L&N mainline to St. Louis but was downgraded and truncated to New Memphis, IL and then later to Okawville, IL by CSX . The line was then leased to Evansville Western and traffic has picked up substantially since then with the construction of the 12.6 mile spur to the Sugar Camp mine near Akin, IL. and the opening of the White Oak mine near Delafield, IL. along with additional coal traffic interchanged from the NS at Mt. Vernon, IL. The current EVWR local train MCL based out of Mcleansboro is the replacement for the train pictured. Kodachrome Slide scan.

One of my sisters has a little cactus corner that she started a few years ago in her yard. I was there right after it rained and managed to get a photo of with the water drops still clinging to portions of the blooming plants.

Two days prior this was a beautiful fall scene. However winter came early to the southeastern region of Wisconsin. Some trees did not even get a chance to shed their leaves before the wet snow matted down the field of tall grass. The sudden shift to winter did leave a beautiful contrast of orange on white.
