In a biogeographic definition, paramo is any intertropical mountain ecosystem, characterized by shrubby vegetation that generally occurs from altitudes of about 3,000 to 4,000 meters or up to 5,000 meters, that is, in regions above the forest line. continuous but still below the permanent snow line. It is found in East Africa, New Guinea, and Central and South America. However, since in each of these regions this ecosystem has a specific name, when discussing Paramos, we refer specifically to Andean Paramos.
In this strict sense of the term, all Paramos are located in the neotropical zone, mainly in northwestern South America, present in Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador. The ecosystem occupies over 30,000 km² of South America and represents 7% of Ecuador's territory. In absolute terms, Colombia is home to 50% of the extent of Paramos (in its three branches of the Andes) and the largest Paramo in the world (Sumapaz).
Paramos' climate is characterized by wide daily fluctuations in temperature and humidity. In general, cold and humid, can undergo a sudden and drastic change in which temperatures fluctuate from below freezing to 30 ° C plus in a daily freeze-thaw cycle. High altitude in tropical locations produces a special, cold, low air density atmosphere that allows for greater dispersion of ultraviolet radiation (light and heat). In Paramo ecosystems, soils are generally recent, of glacial and volcanic origin, and many are still in formation. Its structure is a combination of organic material that decomposes very slowly in cold weather with volcanic ash. These characteristics contribute to soil water retention, which in turn is the basis of an essential environmental service: the constant storage and distribution of clean water to lower places.
The largest and most known area is the Páramo grass, which covers large areas of the mountain ranges. It extends from approximately 3,500 to 4,100 m in height, and is mainly composed of grasses and small shrubs.

Whatever definition we use for heroism, these firefighters more than amply qualify. The helicopter in this image was in rotation with the Canadair CL-415 Super Scooper planes as they battled an advancing wildfire (Rock Fire on West Mountain, just south of Tamarack Resort near Donnelly, Idaho). When the Super Scoopers had doused the flames and were on their return flight to skim the surface of the lake for more water, this helicopter would fly in and douse hot spots with water using an enormous bucket suspended on a long cable. What’s your definition of 'slipper orchid'? This Paphiopedilum Tony Saab is redefining it. Personally, I think this looks more like a high-end designer pouch than any footwear I’ve ever seen. The main color is this gorgeous, almost dramatic, dark glossy red, and then it’s adorned with those intense, raised shiny spots, looking like an avant-garde leather jacket or a pair of fabulous, studded boots.
The head-on view reveals a symmetrical, almost "robotic-meets-organic" creature. You’ve got the pointed dorsal sepal, the spiky, fuzzy lower petals, and that smooth, central body. If an alien spaceship and a deep-sea creature had a very stylish baby, it might look like this. I love how the lighting from behind shows off the veins and texture. It's beautiful, but also kind of ready to take over the world with its unparalleled gloss.

The fourth in my series wherein I attempted to define the 'space' of a particular location, not necessarily trying to take a picture of any one subject or element.
Here a fenced off demolition site where I had to lean in through an opening in the fence.
So I went Spider Hunting last night and thankfully, despite the frequent thunderstorms as of late, a good few webs with occupants were still available. Albeit some were at incredibly awkward angles, this ferocious girl was tucking into its most recent capture as I came by, her fangs are quite visible which I was happy about, as so often I come across them and they're already masticating down on whatever they caught that day, so I end up with an interesting face but the fangs are occupied with a half devoured bug.

A couple of weeks ago the leaves were starting to pop but now as you can see they are bursting into full bloom....high definition.

Speedway races take place on a flat, oval track with a subsoil of calcareous sandstone. According to the official definition, this is a "surface of granite, slate, brick granules or similar unbound material on a subsoil of solid earth". Racers lay their machines sideways into corners (known as powersliding), with the rear wheels "kicking out" to steer them around corners with the front wheels. When cornering, riders brace themselves with their left leg to maintain balance. During this process, the foot is usually protected by a steel sliding shoe (steel shoe).
In a speedway race, four or six riders start at the same time in a standing start. Their bikes must weigh at least 80 kg, have no brakes and only one gear. The engines are 500 cc single-cylinder four-strokes with methanol as fuel. Speeds of up to 130 km/h are reached on the straights.
A race over four laps takes about one minute with a track length of 300 to 400 meters.
On Whit Monday 2023, MSC Abensberg traditionally held one of four qualifying races for the 2024 Speedway Grand Prix.
