I think most people see sailboats and think of a relaxing endeavour, soaking up the sunshine as the soft winds blow, the vessels like immense swans gliding along the water blissfully.
Perhaps that’s actually the case for most folks out on their boats, however, my experience with sailing was quite different. I was only ever on a sailboat a handful of times but each of those were with Barnacle Bill. Bill (his real name) was my father and he bought a sailboat shortly after I was married so sailing wasn’t something with which I grew up. That meant I hadn’t been properly trained to be a sailor and neither had Norm.
Our first time out Dad issued the rules and we were more than willing to learn and abide. Yet as the outing progressed Bill’s barking grew more and more intense.
“Don’t sit there!”
“Grab that line!”
(What line? What do you want me to do with it?)
And so it went.
There seemed to be a very real possibility that we were going to be keelhauled or, at the very least, made to walk the plank. If you ever saw the ‘Friends’ episode where Rachel was trying to teach Joey how to sail you’ll have a clear idea of what I’m trying to describe.
I do know that his high anxiety was his concern for everyone’s safety and thus was quite forgivable but truth be told ever since those experiences I have been quite content to simply get the occasional photograph of a sailboat. :-)

Even though this fascinating geological formation is named for it's color, orange, I liked the way the textures and definition stood out in b/w.

Seed heads inside the cookie jar with a mid blue wrapping paper behind the jar.
Shot wide open as usual to lose definition of the actual jar but at the same time making it difficult to get a seed head in focus...by the way the lens is actually protruding inside of the jar for this shot which shows how close this lens can focus.

This is my definition of perfect lighting in a photograph. It couldn't get any better if it wanted to. The natural fog in the background allowed the light to fill so much of the frame. The contrasting warm waters and five degree air temperatures certainly helped with that effect. Light is a beautiful thing and an underestimated gift. For the opposite of light is darkness. They cannot and never will coexist. When the light shows up, the darkness hides away and is kept at bay until the light stops shining. For the perfect Creator, Christ Jesus, is the Light of the world and there is no darkness in Him and His light casts out ALL darkness!
When I checked out this area in the daylight, I was just ecstatic - I was imagining endless compositional possibilities for my nightscapes. So, hours later, as I arrived again around midnight at this VERY dark place, I could hardly see my hand in front of my face let alone set up a couple of lights to give me a little foreground definition. I do have experience in this area, so I was pretty dumbfounded. I suppose it seemed darker than ever because of the dark and black lava rock that just sucked up my light. It was a magnificent clear night after a rain though, full of fresh scents, and I thanked my lucky stars I could see them.

......... The clarity and definition in this photo, are not as good as I would like them to be. But I thought some of my Flickr buddies would enjoy seeing it anyway.
I had to do more editing than usual to pull out what light and definition were available. I have a couple more images I may be able to tweak and post in a day or two.
Commentary below for those who like a back story.
This mamma and three cubbies showed up in the barnyard yesterday afternoon just about the same time as a sleet and wind storm. I managed to snap about 12 or 15 shots before the whole hilltop was enveloped in a huge steely gray cloud, accompanied by horizontal rain, sleet and wind gusts that flattened the standing hay and goldenrod stalks.
She came down out of the pinewoods and trotted through the barnyard urging the cubs along at a fairly brisk trot. But she stopped briefly to investigate a pile of apple peels I had tossed on the lawn after making apple butter. If it hadn't been for that little interlude, I don't think I would have managed to get a lens on her. As it was, the first several shots were through the window; Until I realized she was going to nose through the apple peels and I opened the porch door and stepped out..
She never did actually bolt and run ........... she left the cubs nose through the compost pile and then they slipped over the bank and down into the lower woods. ...... About half a minute later the cloud burst hit.
