27th August 2018:

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

"The first person to use it in the form we know today (“beauty is in the eye of the beholder”) was an author called Margaret Wolfe Hungerford. She included the phrase in her book 'Molly Bawn' (1878). It is another way of saying that beauty is subjective. “It's true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

I thought of doing this for today's theme, my only problems was Rufus, he wan't happy with the camera being so close to his face. Even treaties weren't helping. So when I got this photo, although it wasn't quite what I was after, it's getting used.

Better viewed large and thank you for your favourites. :O)

"Beauty without virtue is like a rose without scent"

proverb

The title quotation is meant as a humorous play on words. An egg does indeed make a fragile gift. (unless hard boiled, or better still a Faberge egg !)

But it does not really address Janets thought provoking and challenging theme of 'defining beauty'.

So my serious quotation is from the landscape artist John Constable

"I never saw an ugly thing in my life: for let the form of an object be what it may, - light, shade, and perspective will always make it beautiful." John Constable

Constables quote is a bit of a 'catch all' and I dont claim to have done justice to light shade and perspective.

I was tempted to feature a 'painted lady' butterfly (see my photostream) which most people will regard as beautiful. But decided to remain with the hens egg, even though as Confucius pointed out some will not see it as beautiful.

I think it is. There are eggs with a prettier colour or pattern. But a hens egg still shows a beauty of form, and is one of natures beautiful and practical designs. Wonder and beauty are close kin.

I can look at a painting or a piece of art and find it beautiful. But I get amazed when I look at a flower, butterfly, bird or a colorful fish. Nothing beats Mother nature.

Macro Mondays: Defining Beauty.

"Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit..." 1 Peter 3:3-4a.

This shot, though close to what I was aiming at, isn't as obvious as I was hoping it would be.

The hand is an elderly lady's hand, and belongs to a friend of mine. She has terrible arthritis, which you can barely see in the swollen joints shown. In spite of this and other health setbacks, she is one of the most vibrant, enjoyable and active people I know. With a down to earth sense of humour, she never ceases to bring a smile to my face.

The hand also shows signs of hard work. She owns, and manages a six horse stable and helps her daughter run a twenty-one horse stable. Active every day, and helping where she can, she continues to be a source of inspiration to me.

Beauty will fade. Who our characters are in life, is how we will be remembered in death. I want to aim to be a person with an inner beauty that will supersede the fading of my outer shell...in essence, someone worth remembering. HMM

That means that every one of us find beautiful items in different things. May be when you are a city dwelling you are eager for nature, so you tend to be attracted for nature and their manifastations. May be when you live in the countryside you feel more attracted to man-made objects. The appreciation of beauty also depends of people instruction and culture.

There is no exquisite beauty without some strangeness in the proportion.

“True beauty radiates not from outer cosmetics, but from the simple joy of making a difference for those that need your voice, passion, and time without expecting or wanting anything in return...” Deborah Barnes

-------------------------------------------------

I have been a volunteer for the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) in Raleigh, North Carolina for many years. The NCMA has a fantastic and dedicated team of volunteers that over the past year has donated over 200,000 hours of time and service to the art museum and Museum Park.

Today at the Volunteer Appreciation luncheon I was among five volunteers recognized for volunteering a high level of service, above and beyond what was required, during the 2018 fundraiser, Art In Bloom. We were given 'Art Heart' gift cards, a newly designed badge lanyard that will identify volunteers of their special recognition and a huge bouquet of flowers.

The Art In Boom fundraiser takes many hours of behind-the-scenes and guest facing volunteerism. During the two days of preparation before the fundraiser is open to the public, volunteers help to prepare the galleries in front of each piece of art that will be featured with a floral design and the next day they escort the floral designers into the galleries with flatbeds of flowers, tools, vases, etc... and help them with any additional need required. The fundraiser is open to the public for the next four days and is mostly serviced by the NCMA volunteer teams in many capacities. This year, over 15,000 people attended the Art In Bloom fundraiser in the four days it was open to the public.

I have always felt that volunteerism is a most beautiful 'gift of the heart'. As a volunteer at the art museum and witnessing other volunteers there, we have one common goal - to help our guests have the best possible experience during their visit. The above quote by Deborah Barnes so perfectly defines the level of grace, beauty and service we as volunteers give to the NCMA.

HMM, everyone ! !

Macro Mondays Defining Beauty Challenge

"I believe the world is incomprehensibly beautiful - an endless prospect of magic and wonder."

Ansel Adams

Beauty is such a difficult subject. As another saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and much of what I find beautiful others almost certainly won't. I am a firm believer that all nature is beautiful so have opted for a classically beautiful rose.

beauty is ephemeral but our memories make it eternal

Macro Mondays.. You will always find beauty in navie..

Macro Monday - Defining Beauty

I had trouble with this one. The theme seemed so serious, I thought about just skipping MacroMonday this week, but then I decided to just try to have fun with it.

So, my Beauty Quote is,

"Beauty is in the pie of the beholder",

or, to paraphrase my paraphrase,

we tend to find beauty in what gives us pleasure.

Pie gives me pleasure, pleasure is beauty, pie is beautiful!

This little crystal ball is just under two inches in diameter.

The pie, some may say, is much larger than necessary,

but, contrary to another common saying,

size does matter and I enjoyed making this silly image.

Cheers, and have a Beautiful and Happy Macro Monday!

p.s. Coffee is also beautiful 8-)

Macro Mondays - Defining Beauty

"The beauty of chess is it can be whatever you want it to be. It transcends language, age, race, religion, politics, gender and socioeconomic background. Whatever your circumstances, anyone can enjoy a good fight to the death over the chess board." – Simon Williams

Chess is a game that I have enjoyed since I was a young boy. I have never been very good, but I do find beauty in the game. It is both subtle and sublime.

This week’s Macro Mondays assignment – “Defining Beauty” – has ended up so surreal and far from beauty it’s unbelievable.

Remarkably I found a cornflake that looked uncannily like an angler fish, which must be about the ugliest creature that God created, the cornflake corresponding to the following quote about beauty:

“That's always seemed so ridiculous to me, that people want to be around someone because they're pretty. It's like picking your breakfeast cereals based on color instead of taste.” (John Green, Paper Towns)

Blüht eine Blume, zeigt sie uns die Schönheit. Blüht sie nicht, lehrt sie uns die Hoffnung.

Zitat von Chao-Hsiu Chen

If a flower blooms, it shows us the beauty. If it does not bloom, it will teach us hope.

Quoted by Chao-Hsiu Chen

Schön ist eigendlich alles, was man mit Liebe betrachtet. Je mehr jemand die Welt liebt, desto schöner wird er sie finden.

Zitat: Christian Morgenstern

Beautiful is eigendlich everything, which one considers with love. The more someone loves the world, the better he will find it.

Quote: Christian Morgenstern

"Die Schönheit der Natur ist Komfort für die Seele"

"The beauty of nature is comfort for the soul "

Have a nice day :-) HMM

"Beauty is not flawless, it shines even through your flaws". Found this quote on the internet, I have to admit. I thought I could create something where a pretty flower would shine through something. But the fabrics I'd used made the flower look very faint and boring. So I used my trusted layers again. I copied layers and used different blending modes until I thought it was usable.

A single flower here is tiny, perhaps 3 mm across. They use these as fillers for bouquets. As usual, I didn't know how pretty they were until I looked on the big screen.

"I decided that if I could paint that flower in a huge scale, you could not ignore its beauty." Georgia O'Keeffe.

Macro Mondays: Defining Beauty

HMM!

This is a Japanese proverb. It's means Beautiful women are often short-lived. Of course I don't think it's true, but In the case of flowers it may be so. Flower life is short, it may be beautiful because it is ephemeral.

In this picture, I express short-lived beauty that the Morning-Glory blooms summer morning but withers in the afternoon.

He has made everything beautiful in its time (Ecclesiastes 3 :11)

American feminist writer Gloria Steinem

Beauty is harmony and proportion.

And in nature it is where we can best find it.

La belleza es armonía y proporción.

Y en la naturaleza es donde mejor podemos encontrarla.

Beauty lies in the eye of beholders.

-Yves Saint-Laurent

The quote is an adage I have heard a number of times over the years at different times and in different places. Is there beauty in this macro closeup of the small pebbles I used in a landscaping project? To me there is; rough hewn as it may be. But as you behold this photo, what do you see?

Happy MM!
