Description of Historic Place

Built in 1919-20, the William T. Wesgate House is a stately two and a half storey, red brick Colonial Revival style home located along the “Victoria Avenue corridor” at 225 Giles Boulevard West in central Windsor. Recognized for its heritage value by City of Windsor Bylaw 142-2002, it typifies the quality of residential development in this upscale neighbourhood.

Heritage Value

The William T. Wesgate House is an excellent example of the fine homes built in this central Windsor neighbourhood from 1890 to 1930 for some of the city’s most influential and prominent families. Merchant James Dougall, who developed the area, imposed stiff restrictions on buyers of the original lots. These restrictions included minimum setbacks and house values, as well as a promise that no building would be used for commercial purposes.

The building’s association with William Thomas Wesgate, for whom it was constructed in 1919-20, adds to its historical value. Best known as a maker of fine ice cream, Wesgate owned the Wesgate Ice Cream Manufacturing Plant from 1911 to 1938. He was active in municipal politics, business and fraternal societies, and lived in the house until 1966.

The house is an excellent and well-preserved example of a fine Colonial Revival style home. Representative features include its two and a half storey symmetrical design with gable roof, double-hung wooden sash windows, and prominent arched entrance porch boasting paired Doric columns and pilasters. Other architectural elements of note include the dentil moulding on the cornice and gable ends, the three attic dormers with arched roofs, the two single-storey side wings with balustraded decks, and the original red tile roofs on both the house and the matching hip-roofed garage.

Located at the corner of Giles Street and Victoria Avenue, in what is known as the “Victoria Avenue corridor,” the William T. Wesgate House contributes to a heritage streetscape of exceptionally fine homes of distinctive and diverse designs.

Character-Defining Elements

Character defining elements that contribute to the aesthetic and architectural value include:

- its symmetrical, two and a half storey design with gable roof

- prominent front doorway with arched entrance porch

- detailed cornices and gable ends

- three attic dormers with arched roofs and 6/1 double hung windows

- two, single-storey wings with balustraded decks

- window groupings

- wooden shutters

- stone sills,

- brick voussoirs with cast-stone keystones

- Palladian style windows on the gable ends

- small decorative shallow wooden ell on the west facade

- original red tile roof on the house and matching hip-roofed garage

- diamond-shaped panels in some windows, including the bay on the north facade

- half-timbering on the gable ends.

Character defining elements that express the building’s historical and contextual values include its:

- prominent setting along the Victoria Avenue corridor of central Windsor

- 1919-20 outstanding design, materials and workmanship

- its visual contributing to the heritage streetscape.

In spite of cutting the red saturation by 50% in post, these roses still look THAT pink. They similarly saturated my eyes while in the garden.

Vancouver Lookout, constructed in 1977, is the defining feature of Vancouver’s skyline, and its flying saucer design offers sightseers 360-degree views of the city. Myth, Dance and Music

To this day, the Tao have preserved their ancient musical tradition that features a variety of songs and ballads performed in a narrowly-defined register. The different styles and techniques, including solo singing, chorus singing (featuring a lead singer), unison singing, duet and canon singing, have been passed down from generation to generation. Along the lines of the singers’ gender and status, the occasion and time, as well as the song’s form and content, strict distinctions were made between magical and ritual songs on the one hand, and work songs and other tunes related to everyday life on the other.

Most Tao singing falls in the category of recitative solo singing, while in terms of content the focus is on prayers and ritual songs addressed to the gods and spirits. At the same time, religious themes are closely connected with everyday work and mythical legends. About 80% of traditional Tao ballads and songs fall into the male domain. Women have much fewer opportunities to sing: dance is their domain.

Among most of Taiwan’s indigenous peoples, singing is usually an activity performed by men and women together, but Orchid Island’s Tao are different. Men and women rarely sing together, and if they do, it is almost exclusively limited to work songs, such as tunes related to land clearing, plowing, weeding, and sowing millet.

Many of the Tao songs are performed in praise and worship of the sea, as befits a culture so intimately connected with the ocean and fishing. Boat building, which is another important aspect of Tao seagoing life, also has given rise to a number of songs, some of them sung on the eve of the Great Canoe-Launching Ceremony. The canoe-launching tunes are quite solemn and dignified, and the words are in a very archaic style of the ancient Tao language. Incidentally, these particular chants are addressed to the heavens, not the sea, and it is strictly forbidden to sing them at any other times than the evening before the Canoe-Launching Ceremony.

The Tao fishing songs are an integral part of their fishing activities, and are mostly sung by individuals (solo) or as duets. But between March and June, the peak season for catching flying fish in the island’s offshore waters, the crews of the large canoes sing together in unison as they return from a day’s work, the rhythm of their rowing in perfect sync with the beat of the song. According to the Taos’ traditional customs, “men sing and women dance”. In other words, dancing skills are passed on among the female members of the tribe, and they are particularly valued in young, unmarried women or married women who have not had children yet. They are the principal performers of the dances on occasion of important festivals and ritual celebrations, or in a less formal setting when a “dancing party” is held under the sky on a clear night with a bright moon. There is an air of mystery and ethereal beauty to such performances, but the atmosphere becomes more “down-to-earth” if the men join in at some point.

In traditional dance, the men’s moves were mostly restricted to stylized gestures symbolizing the pounding of millet—a performance given during the Bumper Millet Harvest Festival. Otherwise, women completely dominated this area of Tao culture, but after the end of Japanese colonial rule over Taiwan, a number of dances were added to the male repertoire, including the Warrior Dance, the Spiritual Dance and others that are meant to express the men’s valor and prowess at fishing and other activities.

Male dances now involve a number of special steps and moves, including beating parts of the body with the hands to produce a variety of sounds and rhythms and display the beauty of male toughness and hardihood. The most famous of the Tao dances, however, has to be the women’s Hair Dance, also known as the Hair-Flinging Dance. For this, the women get in a line, standing side by side and, elbow to elbow, holding each other tightly by the hands, they do not move their feet at first but let their hair fly wildly. As they start to sing, they bend their bodies forward until their long hair touches the ground, and now they begin to move their feet, gradually advancing in a line as they keep flinging their long hair with increasing force and a forward and backward movement of the head. As they dance, they also bend their knees, which adds extra momentum to their moves and allows them to fling their hair even more powerfully to the rhythm of the music.

for those who love to explore, this is for you and for those who know me, here's another picture posted with emotion......on Friday best mate and I went to London with our bestest of friends to a restaurant called 'Dans le noir' the trip was arranged and masterminded by just one of our group for a very special anniversary and the rest of us were kept in the dark.......here's the rub, this shot was taken by me at St Pancras station whilst having a glass of wine on route, I was just blown away by the setting sun casting shadows on our travelling companions.........40 minutes later we entered 'dans le noir' for our meal, a restaurant that serves your meal in complete darkness, the waiters, or guides are absolutely blind, for a short period we entered into their world, we laughed, we had fun, the waiters touched our lives and we touched theirs.....but I, had a defining moment, for some, life is complete darkness regardless of wether they can see or not, and for others, it is showered in light, either with sight or from their outlook on life on a daily basis, we are all blessed with imagination and through this gift we are all capable of producing a form of image in our minds eye.......how we view our lives is down to us as individuals.

I have had this photo sitting on my computer for a few weeks not really knowing how to process or even envision what the final outcome should look like. The original is very flat looking with no defined edges and the panels all blend in. With this being a place that is often shot, I wanted to bring a different look than what I have seen in the past and define each curve making one panel stand out from the other. Where to start was the true question and then how to accomplish the end product.

Well I decided to spend $99 and buy Joel Tjintjelaar's video on Master Class black and white architecture/seascapes. After watching the video it helped me fine tune my vision in composition and then also how to accomplish that vision with post processing techniques.

Seems I always had an idea of where I wanted the photo's to go after I took them but I could never get them there in post processing with the right lighting, definition, texture and depth. Joel's video helped define those rolls and that vision.

I applied some of those techniques here and hopefully on more photo's to follow. My processing used to take a few hours on this shot my post processing was about 10 hours maybe a little more.

I am happy with the final product here, I feel it was $99 well spent to help expand my learning. If Joel T ever gets to view this I would really like to get his critique.

The Raygun Gothic Rocket, by by Sean Orlando, Nathaniel Taylor, David Shulman, John Manyjohns.

The Raygun Gothic Rocket is an immersive large-scale installation consisting of a 40' tall metal rocketship connected via walkway to a taller gantry launch tower with a well-defined lighted perimeter. Participants can interactively explore the rocket's three interior chambers accessible through the bottom of the rocket and the top of the rocket via the gantry. Aesthetically, the Rocketship explores the rococo retro-futurist future-rustic vernacular. Existing between yesterday's tomorrow and the future that never was... it is a critical kitsch somewhere between The Moons of Mongo and Manga Nouveau.

The local has completed their reverse move through the crossovers at W. Darling and is now pulling up to switch the propane dealer. DS10 was eager to get Main 2 back as he made it clear to the crew that the EB's were stacking up behind them. With 30+ cars in the train today, they will tie it down on Main 1 while they duck into the siding/yard to switch the customer.

The solid white background is the well defined snow line that was moving through the area. With only a good dusting and flurries here, Cosnino had a foot, and Walnut Creek Canyon had 18" already on the ground. All that in the matter of 7 miles.

Another shot from my day on the Grande the summer before last while everyone else was at Promontory.

After shooting three trains at Thompson we zipped west to catch back up with this BNSF train. But a tragic chase mistake was made as our driver stayed on I70 forgetting that you have to diverge on to US Rte 6 just east of Green River to follow the old Grande east.

We drove quite a long way in the wrong direction before finally biting the bullet and making an illegal u turn on the interstate and heading back.

It took us a bit to catch back up to this empty oil train as he flew across the desert but we finally did here where it mattered.

This wide sweeping horseshoe is between Grassy and Cedar sidings near MP 590 on the old Grande Utah Division now known as Union Pacific's Green River Sub. Climbing a low bluff with a bunch of other fans I was afforded this spectacular vista looking south east toward the Book Cliffs that are a defining feature of this spectacular portion of the former D&RGW.

This empty unit train is destined for the Wellington load out near Price. The facility operated by Global One Transport began shipping unit trains of Uintah Basin crude in 2014.

I know I’m not the only one ready to put some of this year behind them. There’s a lot I must do between now and November, but if you’re mindful as I am for the coming attraction of what autumn will bring, we stand together with hearts on fire! For all that needs doing, sorties to western North Carolina are high on the agenda… I just have to figure on how to fit it all in.

My wife and I help to produce the Alpha Marriage Course, and though that occurs at our church, it has a much more far reaching effect to the world… it’s important to us, even while it goes on at such prime photography time in the fall mountains, so I have to figure on workarounds to make it all work. That’s heavy on my mind today, even as I prepare for tonight’s gathering, the second night of the seventh round of eight weeks… grilled pork loin is on the grill to be served with reduced port fig sauce for around 30 people tonight, along with everything to go with it. I can’t help but bring my A-game to these events. Trying to stay focused. Mountains, however, call to another A-game behind the camera.

These mountains have more different species of trees in a concentrated place than anywhere else in the world. Fall becomes not just a kaleidoscope of color, but also of a variation of specific colors… reds are evident as a variation from so many different trees, such as sassafras, maples, oaks, sourwood, sumac. While on hikes to the grand landscapes, I look for more intimate compositions of leaves. Red oaks are defined as such because of the reddish hue of the wood. I believe you could make a case about that concerning the leaves, too. Here, backlit red oak leaves project one of the most brilliant reds of any in these mountains… looks like hearts on fire to me. Who’s ready for that?

Summer at the Mount

The defining feature of the Disney parks is all those little details everywhere you look. Nowhere is this more true than at Disney's Animal Kingdom. These snakes and frogs, for example, are part of the roofing detail on one of the buildings in Animal Kingdom.

Green World is a literary concept defined by critic Northrop Frye in The Anatomy of Criticism (Princeton; Princeton University press, 1957), pp. 182-4. In some comedies by William Shakespeare, the main characters escape the order of a city for a forested and wild setting adjacent to the city. This natural environment is often described as a green world.

It is in this more loosely structured, fantastic environment that issues surrounding social order, romantic relationships, and inter-generational strife, which are a prominent part of the "city world", become resolved, facilitating a return to the normal order. Recent literary critics drawn to eco-criticism have occasionally found the concept valuable to their work as well.

The whiskered tern (Chlidonias hybrida) is a tern in the family Laridae. The genus name is from Ancient Greek khelidonios, "swallow-like", from khelidon, "swallow". The specific hybridus is Latin for hybrid; Pallas thought it might be a hybrid of white-winged black tern and common tern, writing "Sterna fissipes [Chlidonias leucopterus] et Hirundine [Sterna hirundo] natam”.

This bird has a number of geographical races, differing mainly in size and minor plumage details.

C. h. hybrida breeds in warmer parts of Europe and the Palearctic (northwestern Africa and central and southern Europe to southeastern Siberia, eastern China and south to Pakistan and northern India). The smaller-billed and darker C. h. delalandii is found in east and south Africa, and the paler C. h. javanicus from Java to Australia.

The tropical forms are resident, but European and Asian birds winter south to Africa and the Indian Subcontinent. A tagged whiskered tern was spotted at Manakudi Bird Sanctuary, Kanniyakumari District of Tamil Nadu, India in the month of April 2021.

This species breeds in colonies on inland marshes, sometimes amongst black-headed gulls, which provide some protection. The scientific name arises from the fact that this, the largest marsh tern, show similarities in appearance to both the white Sterna terns and to black tern.

The size, black cap, strong bill (29–34 mm in males, 25–27 mm and stubbier in females, with a pronounced gonys) and more positive flight recall common or Arctic tern, but the short, forked-looking tail and dark grey breeding plumage above and below are typically marsh tern characteristics. The summer adult has white cheeks and red legs and bill. The crown is flecked with white in the juvenile, and the hindcrown is more uniformly blackish, though in the winter adult this too is flecked with white. The black ear-coverts are joined to the black of the hindcrown, and the space above is mottled with white, causing the black to appear as a C-shaped band. The sides of the neck are white; this sometimes continues across the nape. The collar is less sharply defined. All through the year the rump is pale grey. In the juvenile, the mantle (279 mm) has a variegated pattern. The feathers of the back and scapulars are dark brown, with prominent broad buff edgings and often subterminal buff bars or centers. There is usually an admixture of new gray feathers, especially on the mantle, quite early in the fall. The mantle is silvery-gray in the adult. The call is a characteristic krekk.

In winter, the forehead becomes white and the body plumage a much paler grey. Juvenile whiskered terns have a ginger scaly back, and otherwise look much like winter adults. The first winter plumage is intermediate between juvenile and adult winter, with patchy ginger on the back.

The whiskered tern eats small fish, amphibians, insects and crustaceans.

For most birds, the word “pecks” describes an action made with its beak in an effort to attain food, create lodging, or defend itself. For this bird, “pecks” refers to its well defined, heavily streaked brown breast, that it frequently fluffs in display. These medium sized sandpipers also have an inflatable throat sack that expand and contract during flight, giving it a unique and unusual call. They are known as Pectoral Sandpipers. In essence, the bird defines the word and the word defines the bird. #PectoralSandpipers
