This picture is, again, spontaneous. My niece, Jada, was hitting my cousin Manna and I told her to look at the camera so she would stop hitting her aunt. I just love this picture.

Impressionism and the South

Nov 8, 2017 — Sep 23, 2018

"On April 15, 1874, in an act of defiance against the official French government-sanctioned Salon exhibitions, thirty self-proclaimed Independent artists opened an exhibition at photographer Nadar’s vacated Paris studio. Shortly after, a satirical review that mocked Claude Monet’s Impression, Sunrise gave the movement its name. Impressionism was the first bombshell launched against academic tradition. The movement defined light as color, becoming the first modern language of paint.

Sun-drenched and spontaneous, this selection of American Impressionist paintings from the GCMA permanent collection invites viewers to consider the ideas and techniques that opened the door to modern visual expression"

"The Greenville County Museum of Art invites visitors to sample the best in American art through its impressive permanent collection, as well as through traveling exhibitions. Located at 420 College Street on Heritage Green in downtown Greenville, South Carolina, the GCMA is perhaps best known for its Andrew Wyeth collection. Including an example from every major period of Wyeth’s career, the GCMA’s collection is the largest of any public institution in the world. The GCMA’s respected Southern Collection surveys American art from colonial times to the present, ranging from 1726 pastel portraits and Civil War vistas to American Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, American Scene, and contemporary works. The GCMA boasts a particularly strong collection of works by South Carolina artist Jasper Johns."

"Considered the premier American art museum in the South, the GCMA is home to the world’s largest public collection of watercolors by iconic American artist Andrew Wyeth. The GCMA also has an impressive collection of paintings and prints by contemporary artist Jasper Johns, the largest institutional collection of pottery by enslaved artisan David Drake, and the largest collection outside the Smithsonian of works by South Carolina-born artist William H. Johnson. Ranging from Federal portraits to contemporary abstractions, the GCMA’s acclaimed Southern Collection invites viewers to survey American art history through works with ties to the South. "

"Organized visual art activity in Greenville did not begin in earnest until 1935 when three area artists and collectors met to form the Greenville Fine Arts League. The art association acquired its first permanent home with the purchase of the Gassaway Mansion in 1958. Five years later the South Carolina General Assembly established the Greenville County Museum Commission as the governing body of the Greenville County Museum of Art. By virtue of a tax millage, GCMA operations are supported by Greenville County taxpayers, while program support and art purchases are funded by private sources. The GCMA is the only museum in the Upstate to be accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.

Recognizing the need for a modern and secure building to properly store, exhibit, and safeguard artwork, the GCMA formed a public-private partnership that raised funds for a new facility, which opened in March 1974. Sited on downtown’s Heritage Green, this facility provides almost 70,000 square feet of exhibition, education, and storage space. In 1985, the Museum refined its collections policy to focus on creating a comprehensive survey of American art using southern related examples. In 1995 the GCMA published a book, The Southern Collection, which includes 126 essays about 146 different works in the collection. In addition to this core strength, the GCMA owns the world’s largest public collection of watercolors by Andrew Wyeth and a significant collection of contemporary art, including an impressive collection of works by South Carolina artist Jasper Johns. The American Alliance of Museums awarded accreditation to the Museum first in 1973 and subsequently renewed accreditation in 1986, 1998, and 2009."

How would you define yourself? Would you define yourself as a genius? An artist? I chose this photo because I love the black and white colors brining more of an image compared to color. Black and white photos sometimes define the image more, when I see this image of me. I love how my lower body looks bigger than my lower body. I chose this image because it expresses me better, how my outfit looks, and that my shoes look so black. It’s not an ordinary pose or picture you see girls post the internet. I took this in my room behind a white sheet on the wall, Residence on 10th.
