The pillbox has bee built in the grounds of the old castle. I should have thought that the castle would have provided just as much protection for the defenders and was immediately available.
A friend, who had served in the army, once said to me when we were visiting this castle, "I'd have had that tree cut down as it restricts the field of fire." And he's absolutely right.
Unlike most of the Krushevka's and modern apartment blocks elsewhere in Ukraine, the older buildings only have very tiny basements - So lots are sandbagged-up for cover during the air raids.
