Twelve Tu-22M3s were converted to the Tu-22M3(R) reconnaissance variant for Soviet Naval Aviation. These aircraft were equipped with Shompol side-looking airborne radar (SLAR) and other electronic, IR, and optical equipment (ELINT). The aircraft first flew in December 1985 and serial production began in 1989 under the designation Tu-22MR. In 1994, part of the Tu-22M2 fleet was rebuilt to the Tu-22MR standard.
On 9 August 2008, a Russian Tu-22MR reconnaissance aircraft was shot down in South Ossetia by a Georgian air defence Buk-M1 surface-to-air-missile system during the five-day Russo-Georgian War. One of the crew was captured, two others were killed, and the crew commander was missing in action as late as November 2011.
BURRAS DOMINATE THE DAY
A GRADE
The opening round of the 2010 Central Highlands Netball League provided Hepburn with the start they wanted in their hunt for a finals berth. Hepburn’s new senior line up took to the court with great confidence after 10 weeks of fitness and skill training. From the first whistle, Hepburn’s new recruit and star defender Ebony Place, intercepted the ball to pass on to sister Lauren at Wing Defence and Hepburn controlled the ball down court to score.
The Burras continuously applied pressure all over the court as they quickly broke down Daylesford’s attacking systems. Tara Ford, 2009 Under 17’s League Best & Fairest made her senior’s debut in fantastic form. Hepburn’s new defensive combination proved too strong for their opposition and combined with the speed of their attacking line up. Hepburn went to the first break 21 to 3.
Hepburn didn’t hesitate to rotate its entire bench throughout the game with each combination seeing the Burras increase their lead. Hepburn’s fitness and accuracy in goals saw them run out winners 86 to 8. Captain Libby Purtell and Defender Kylie Torpey were extremely pleased to have such a strong win for their 200th games with the club.
Goals: Jane Lienhop 36/43 84%, Libby Purtell 31/41 77%, Kristina Closhey 19/25 76%
B GRADE
Hepburn’s new reserves line up was also eager to kick start the year. With the return of deadly accurate goaler Mel Penny, the Burras came out fast and hard early in the first quarter to over run their opponents defence. Led by captain and Wing Attack Janee Brown, Hepburn continuously pushed the ball down court with speed and accuracy to eventually dominate all over the court.
From a 14 to 2 first quarter start, the Burras never looked back. The new centre court line up has been working on skills and fitness to provide both ends with the support they struggled with last year. Hepburn ran out winners 53 to 18. This will now help the reserves with their goal of a top 4 finish and a run in the finals.
Goals: Mel Penny 41/50 82%, Tania Grant 8/15 54%, Courtney Wetzel 3/7 42%
Other Results
Hepburn’s new C grade team also had a solid win 31 to 25. Hepburn’s Under 17’s won 32 to 13 and Under 13’s A 7 to 4.

The defence cuts in 2010 were a cowardly choice. The MoD had the strongest case of ANY department for ring-fencing its budget when the new government started to look for cuts. It had been easy for a succession of spineless ministers to keep ‘salami-slicing’ defence since 1990 so they could spend money on more popular things. Defence spending was therefore already dangerously low when the economic crisis hit. Even in the ‘good times’ Blair and Brown, with a taste for overseas interventions still failed to ensure adequate funding for defence while other departments saw huge increases.

And we're back to the Rehills/Slang section -- between La Vallee and Rivervale.
Where previously this area was an organised structure of vast earth mounds, which ebbed and flowed with the removal of material, saw the import and removal of enormous mounds of stone material, and emerged as a relatively levelled piece of ground -- we saw the arrival of a fleet of 4-axle trucks bearing fresh mounds of stone. This continued for the best part of a week.
And what has been dumped, has to be sorted, and piled, and graded . . . and ultimately moved on to somewhere else!
In fairness to this contractor (Jons Construction) they recognise the need to control the working environment . . . and YES, that involves watering the access route to the disposal zone.
Hold on, are you telling me that it hasn't been raining recently in Ireland/Wicklow/Bray?
Apparently, not enough.
Hence the arrival of our little friend -- the Ruscon 2000 Slurry Tanker, used as a water bowser/sprayer.

Hard to believe - but I've been recording this project now for 5+ years.
Most of the main civil engineering works have ceased along the Slang/Rehills section of the river bank.
The soil-shifters have finished. The main area of land has been seeded and growth is already happening. In selected areas, plants/shrubs have also been planted.
The plan now will be to allow nature to complete the task of reverting this section back to a wild habitat.
The deer, the foxes, the herons, the raptor birds and other associated wildlife can reclaim the banks . . until the planners decide on their next, belated, unnecessary intervention.
============================
Between the M11 motorway, and the Upper Dargle Road / Hazelwood areas, a stream has run for many years. As well as running from the Fassroe region (west above the M11) this also funnels much of the water run-off from the motorway itself.
There is a culvert running under the road and draining directly into the river opposite The Slang/Rehills.
A branch also runs parallel and through the Egan Business Park before exiting under the road and into the Dargle close to what is identified in historic Ordnance Survey maps as 'Rose Cottage - Laundry'.
There are plans to lay a proper pipe system to channel this water directly across to the Dargle. No doubt a welcome relief to householders along this stretch of road, given that their properties have been victim to the flash flooding that is happening more often due to changes in the meteorological systems, compounded by developments on the opposite side of the motorway.
The downside of this work is the removal of many trees here, and the consequent unwelcome exposure to said properties.
However, recently the contractors have 'filled-in' a large swathe of the previously cleared opening.
To develop this new pipeline, they need to channel a branch pipe under the Upper Dargle Road, discharging into the adjacent Dargle River itself.
This is not a simple 'cut and fill' overnight operation. They have to excavate deeply, pile-drive the cuttings for support, and lay the pipe sections. The plan here is to close off one lane of the road, at a time, while the work proceeds.
This is quite a busy road, with traffic especially heavy during morning and evening rush hour.
Control traffic lights allow contra-flow systems.
This is causing yet more inconvenience for local residents.
Unfortunately, based on previous bad experience with mindless hooliganism, the temporary compound now requires 24-hour security to protect the assembled machinery.

Kings Parade Sea Wall New Brighton Wirral
In order to protect New Brighton, several sea defences have been employed. In order to protect against both coastal erosion and flooding, a large sea wall was constructed in the 1930s, known as the King's Parade Sea Wall. The wall is 4m tall and stretches along 2.3km of coastline.

There's a big drop-off in activity on this site now. Some finishing touches to the river bed itself, cosmetic work along the riverbank sides, and a jig-saw pattern of large boulders placed in mid-stream. The main (final) focus will be on completing the profiles to the wall, securing with poured concrete, and then the completion with the pre-fabricated stone capping.
The guys have attached steel frames to the recess of the sheet-steel uprights, and filled with concrete. They very carefully check levels, laser-assisted. There's still a surprising amount of intricate manual work involved -- machines can only do so much!
The next step involves swinging in pre-formed capping slabs, with inset jacking points, and embedded rods to intertwine with the sheet-steel wall. Accuracy satisfied, the welder melds them together.
It's a race against time, schedules - and expected heavy rains and high river levels on the way.
The fume given off by welding and hot cutting processes is a varying mixture of airborne gases and very fine particles which if inhaled can cause ill health.
Gases that may be present in welding and cutting fume are:
nitrous oxide (NOx),
carbon dioxide (CO2),
carbon monoxide (CO),
shielding gas (eg Argon, helium) and ozone (O3)
The visible part of the fume cloud is mainly particles of metal, metal oxide and flux (if used).
The exact level of risk from the fume will depend on 3 factors:
How toxic the fume is;
How concentrated the fume is;
How long you are breathing the fume

The Civil Defence Corps (CDC) was a civilian volunteer organisation established in Great Britain in 1949 to mobilise and take local control of the affected area in the aftermath of a major national emergency, principally envisaged as being a Cold War nuclear attack. By March 1956, the Civil Defence Corps had 330,000 personnel. It was stood down in Great Britain in 1968
A Warden was expected to be conversant with important local infrastructure, guidance and control of the public.
