River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme.
These images were taken during the third full week of July, 2016.
We took a trip down to the Harbour area, just to acquaint ourselves with the works here. This is a section of the flood protection scheme that I have pretty much ignored -- it's inconvenient for me to access, and others cover it much better.
Moving upriver slightly, to a newly constructed walkway, close to Seapoint Court. Nice work done by the guys from Wills Bros Ltd.
However the cynic in me wonders how long it will be before the local druggies shift locations. Although, perhaps it's a wee bit too exposed for them?
In the foreground is the Railway bridge, and in the distance we can see some construction works taking place on the Ravenswell Road, temporarily closed due to on-going works.
That is the site of the old Bray Golf Club -- hotly contested as a (potentially) poorly considered site for a shopping centre development complex, and still an area of ground that has to act as a flood plain in the event of tidal surges.
Temporary 'boom' across the river (not to repel marauding Viking longships, but to drain/filter excess water from the opposite bank.
====================
"The main work items on the project consisted of the construction of a reinforced earth embankment with 11m long "cut-off Sheet pile wall" within this embankment and a 90m long Sheet Piled Retaining wall (15m long sheet piles) which were anchored for stability using 16.0m long anchors inclined at a various angles. This Sheet Piled Retaining wall was then clad with Granite Randon Rubble stone and resulted in an impressive 5.0m high stone wall along the river. A reinforced concrete flood defence wall complete with stone cladding was also constructed as well as erosion protection measures including underpinning and rock armour installation within the river during low tides. The scheme was completed with the construction of a footpath complete with railings and street lighting along the entire length."

The training took place in the Glen Immal Co Wicklow. The personnel of the unit have a mix of experience, from first trip soldiers and officers, to highly experienced Senior NCO's and Commanders.
The 44 Infantry Group wil deploy to Syria in March, taking over from the 43 Infantry Group who have been serving with UNDOF since September 2013.
The Mission Readiness exercise put commanders and soldiers through a demanding series of scenarios based on the potential threats they may be encountered in the volatile mission area. The Troops face a series of scenarios involving simulated explosive strikes, air mobile helicopter drills,anti-ambush tactics, detailed operational planning and medical evacuation exercises.
Taken at Shoeburyness. This "ex pier" turns out to be a defence boom - constructed during WWII. Apparently it runs nearly 2 miles out to sea. A second boom was built on the Isle of Sheppey, opposite Shoeburyness to create a submarine trap for U-Boats. The boom was reinforced with concrete during the Cold War.

Israeli Soldiers from the Caracal Battalion during their basic training – 2012
The Caracal Battalion is an infantry combat battalion of the Israel Defense Forces, composed of both male and female soldiers, of both Jewish and Arab descent.[It is named after the Caracal, a small cat whose sexes appear the same. As of 2009, approximately 70% of the battalion was female.It is part of the 512th "Sagi" Brigade of Israel's Southern territorial command.
Prior to Caracal's formation in 2000, women had been prevented from serving in direct combat positions with the IDF. The unit has since been tasked with patrolling the Israeli-Egyptian border. It took part in Israel's unilateral withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in the summer of 2005.
The unit badge, adopted in 2009, incorporates the Sagi Brigade badge, with the addition of the Caracal cat.
New recruits in the Caracal Battalion, are issued the Israeli-made Tavor assault rifle. Battalion members partake in a four-month basic training period that includes physical training at the Givati Brigade training base.
Soldiers specialize in various weapons including machine guns, advanced weaponry, grenades, and mortars.
All female soldiers who join the battalion are required to sign up for a third year of military service, the same as their male counterparts. The men are drawn from Nahal garinim, or have volunteered.

The Godwin Battery
Shortly after the outbreak of the First World War, the Godwin Battery was established at Kilnsea. This was added to during the Second World War. It had gun emplacements, search light, barracks, officers’ mess, a hospital, and was the terminus for a military railway running down to further fortifications at Spurn Point. The principal material used in the construction of the installation was concrete, applied on an attack-proof scale.
Today, the fort is falling into the sea. Losses of villages and farms, churches and houses in the past may only be imagined from descriptions in contemporary accounts. At Kilnsea, the destructive forces of coastal erosion can be observed ‘live’.
The Estonian Ministry of Defence has purchased new service rifles from LMT Defense, formerly known as the Lewis Machine & Tool Company, and will supply the Country's Defence Force with two new service weapons.
The LMT MARS platform of AR-15 and AR-10 pattern rifles, as well as a 40 mm grenade launcher compatible with these Rifles.
Both Rifles will be replacing the current issue Rifles, the Israeli-built Galil-AR and the Swedish-made Ak4 (a licensed copy of the H&K G3A3).
The grenade launchers included in the contract are LMT’s M203 rail-mounted 40 mm GLs.

Damaged beach defence observed at Climping Beach in West Sussex.
[From the UK Beaches guide:]
Climping beach is also known as Atherington Beach, as with many along the south coast, has wooden groynes and is pebbles at high tide. But at low tide, a huge expanse of dark, fine, hard-packed sand is exposed, making it an ideal spot for families and shallow swimming. Very popular with kitesurfers and windsurfers with grass areas for setting up.
Climping Beach is a quieter area of coastline than its neighbors of Littlehampton and Bognor Regis. Much of the area is now designated of scientific interest, and parts are a nature reserve, although many sections of the sand dunes are now fenced off to protect against erosion and help local species to thrive.
The actual beach is exposed and struggles with coastal erosion and can change it's appearance between visits.
Israeli soldiers of the Golani brigade take part in an exercise near the border with Syria on May 6, 2013 at the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights. Syria has accused Israel of launching a series of airstrikes on targets near the Lebanon/Syria border, including an arms shipment and the Jamraya research centre, that was thought to produce chemical weapons.

The members of 106 Recruit Platoon have completed their toughest week of training thus far following an intensive exercise in the Glen of Imaal. The platoon exercised in conventional military operations involving long range patrols, patrol harbours, fighting patrols and a platoon in defence scenario. This was a physically and mentally demanding week for the recruits and is another step towards the successful completion of the their basic military training.

Constant traffic nowadays with hard material being trucked in and dumped in storage areas along The Slang/Rehills section of the river bank.
Further work is now being undertaken to upgrade the protection of the riverbank edge with the laying down of extra stone material.
With the recent convoys of trucks bringing in vast quantities of stone, we now see that;
(a) some of the larger boulders are intended to be used as reinforcements along the base of certain bank edges (which have to be excavated again), and;
(b) some of the medium size stones look like they will be used to create secondary shelves along the riverside.
At the same time, the guys are working (or playing?) on changing the profile of the stepped terrace along the face of the Slang/Rehills section.
Seems like every time they do this, and we believe it is a 'finished' piece of work, they confound us later by ripping it up all over again.
I know there is value in maintaining this area as a smooth accessible strip. But the degree of attention they apply to this is then wasted by the randomness with which they undo all the previous work.
