Diagram shows the process by which one computer synthesizes fake images and another tries to tell whether those are real or fake. Millions of cycles of back and forth can lead to more realistic images.

A generative adversarial network (GAN) learns to generate images by pitting two neural networks against each other. The generator network tries to create an image that looks real, while a discriminator network tries to see through the deception — and both try to learn from their mistakes. After enough cycles, the results can look startlingly realistic.

Synthetic media: The real trouble with deepfakes

Keeping on top of manipulated videos and images is no easy feat. Scientists trace the roots of their proliferation, dig up new techniques to counter digital forgeries and warn of the growing dangers ahead.

Manipulated photos have the potential to pose a problem in the news, courts, national security and other arenas. The human eye is surprisingly limited in its ability to detect such fakes, but new computational techniques may help authenticate images.

Digital assistants predict Pete's every move - is he a Deepfake, does he exist? An A.I. buddy comedy exploring how human experience is being transformed by technology.

From being fired by your phone, using health data in dating, or A.I. assistants listening and advising on our sex lives. Are we too predictable and who are we to escape it? A mix of sketch, standup and deepfake multimedia performance.

Pete is standup. His sketches have been nominated for short festivals, and currently hosts Just Another Panel Show.

Does it matter if what you desire is real or not? Filters, Photoshop, animation, VR, sex robots, deepfakes, the representation of the eroticized body is moving further and further away from reality. Increasingly, the object of desire is not only obscure, but distorted and hidden by more and more layers of artifice: the disembodiment of the erotic seems immanent. Conversely, the constant barrage of societal and medial incentives and influences might render the impetus for desire itself questionable. Was this really what I wanted?
