Taking a look back at the "Un_Real Desires" group exhibition at SomoS, October 23-27. These photos are from the opening night on Tuesday October 22.

Does it matter if what you desire is real or not? Filters, Photoshop, animation, VR, sex robots, deepfakes, the representation of the eroticized body is moving further and further away from reality. Increasingly, the object of desire is not only obscure, but distorted and hidden by more and more layers of artifice: the disembodiment of the erotic seems immanent. Conversely, the constant barrage of societal and medial incentives and influences might render the impetus for desire itself questionable. Was this really what I wanted?

One of the most well-known attacks to face recognition (FR) systems is using "Silicone Masks" as a Presentation Attack (PA). Therefore, a secure FR system should be able to detect such PAs. Recently, DeepFake, which is a new threat to FR systems, has also become a hot topic. The Biometrics Security and Privacy group at Idiap Research Institute focuses on developing novel biometric recognition systems and studies different aspects of security and privacy of biometrics to anticipate the new threats to come.

The picture shows 13 Silicon Masks and the result of a FR system in detecting fake faces which are shown in red bounding boxes. Moreover, facial landmarks of the first silicon mask are shown with blue points that are connected to form the Delaunay triangulation. These blue points and the triangulation are used in classical FR models, and are depicted in the picture to inspire a FR system. The black background also conveys the scary feeling of the threat of the misuse of Silicon Masks.

Mona Lisa 'brought to life' with deepfake AI.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The subject of Leonardo da Vinci's famous Mona Lisa painting has been brought to life by AI researchers.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The video, achieved from a single photo, shows the model in the portrait moving her head, eyes and mouth. The latest iteration of so-called deepfake technology came out of Samsung's AI research laboratory in Moscow. Some are concerned that the rise of convincing deepfake technology has huge potential for misuse.

Samsung's algorithms were trained on a public database of 7,000 images of celebrities gathered from YouTube. The AI system mapped facial features and movements on to a photo to bring it to life. Google “BBC deepfake” to find the original and full article)·

"Meet in real, in web, in world" is the title of the Ars Electronica Garden in Milan hosted by MEET Digital Culture Center (IT).

The focus of the Milan Garden will be on VR and immersive storytelling. The Garden will be organized during the MEET’s Fest *in real, in web, in world*, as a journey for the exploration of immersive realities and hybrid scenarios through VR exhibitions, installations and laboratories. MEET will present the variegated and multifaceted ecosystem of immersive realities with a critical and international profile. The MEET Garden at Ars Electronica includes:

*Synthetic Corpo-Reality*, a virtual exhibition curated by Julie Walsh – Finissage.

It includes 12 digital artworks at the Mozilla Hubs MEET space. The works by international artists focus on the body as a vehicle to discuss a variety of themes: gender politics, personal data collection, and the search for identity. The Finissage will be the occasion to visit artworks including site-specific immersive installations, photography and video, sculptures, a GIF, and deepfake AI technology.

*Meeting in VR* is a hybrid VR installation that allows interaction between people from different locations through virtual spaces and devices.

*Moving in VR! with Ariella Vidach* is a workshop and a virtual participatory choreography and *Dance the Distance* performance led by choreographer Ariella Vidach. Participants are guided through the discovery of movement in VR from a remote location. The finale is a VR participatory choreography and the *Dance the Distance* performance.
