In slow motion the drops appear,

coldly beating upon this worn facade.

Wearing away the last of all I am,

numbing me for all eternity.

A deepened muffled sound,

resonates inside my aching head.

Each minuscule chilling drop falling,

at a tempo to drive one mad.

I watch as each watery bomb,

explodes upon this damaged body.

Then slithers down till it has done all it can,

to awaken my soul from this emotional sleep.

Without passion I realise with blank stare,

a combination of water and unfamiliar tears.

Falling together, melding as one,

until it impossible to recognise

their individuality.

A quick trip to a local preserve just before sunset yesterday. Not a lot of fall color left, but what there was glowed in the late sunlight. The polarizer also helped deepen the colors.

"It's the kind of human junk that deepens the landscape, makes it sadder and lonelier and places a vague sad subjective regret at the edge of your response - not regret so much as a sense of time's own esthetic, how strange and still and beautiful a chunk of concrete can be, lived in fleetingly and abandoned, the soul of wilderness signed by men and women passing through."

— Don DeLillo

Alpenglows are magnificent but the short period after alpenglow is beautiful in a different, softer way. As the sun slips down, past the horizon, and the night shadows creep slowly up the mountainside, the peaks of Mount Fisher lose their apricot hues and return to an icy blue-white. If there are no clouds, the sky behind the peaks blushes a rosy pink and then, as the sun continues its journey west, the deep blues of evening begin to appear just above the mountain snows and the pinks deepen and move higher into the sky. It's a magical transformation that holds me in awe time and time again.

Falls Of Feugh near Banchory, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The stunning waterfalls called the Falls of Feugh are located near Banchory in Aberdeenshire. The Falls of Feugh are a short walk from Banchory centre. There is a stonebuilt Bridge of Feugh footbridge spanning the river which is popular with visitors who watch salmon climb the natural leap as they make their way up the Falls during spawning season. The best months for spotting salmon leap are September to November and February to March. In the vicinity there is a free car park and the Falls of Feugh Tearooms is just a short walk across the bridge. www.visitscotland.com/info/towns-villages/falls-of-feugh-... ps unfortunately the council has spoiled the bridge with a poorly designed pedestrian bridges and all the banks around the falls are blocked off leaving very limited photo opportunities. One hopes somebody in the council will wake up to this own goal soon.

2022-09-01, Day 6

The deep shade of evening fills the valley and reaches inexorably for the summits of the surrounding peaks south of Colonel Pass, Jasper National Park, Alberta.

A mile or so south of Colonel Pass the towering slopes of Mount Machray rose into view and we sought a place to pitch the tent for the evening in a copse of fir and spruce. The nearby meadow was filled with late-season yellow composites that gleamed brightly in the growing shadows. It was fortuitous to find a campsite with plenty of time to spare before it got dark, with splendid views, and with a few clouds building on the horizon to the southwest. With any luck there might be a sunset to inspire the mind with wonder.

We prepared an evening repast of mushroom risotto with parmigiano, chicken, and peas, and as the pot warmed to its task, I wandered amongst the flowers with an eye to the last light on the peaks. Because sunset so often intersects with the evening mealtime, I find I am rarely outside for the most beautiful light when I am at home. Here, on the other hand, one can wander about the 'kitchen' with the camera in hand so long as half an eye can be spared to prevent the food from burning. As the intoxicating combination of porcini and parmigiano wafted my direction, I could not help but feel elated with where we found ourselves.

Izu Islands have been a popular summer destination for Japanese youths. Although reduced significantly by the outbreak this year, Izu Islands have provided the Japanese youth with a place to create memories. They tend to travel to have a good time with friends to deepen the relationship, or to encounter new friends. It is necessary and invaluable for their life.

However, their focus is on the human tie, not on the ecological and geological treasures of the islands.

Izu Islands have a good potential for "geotourism" that is being promoted by organizations like UNESCO and National Geographic Magazine. I have an impression that the real potential of the islands has been neglected due to the nature of the tourism market.

A walk in the park last weekend meant the camera had to come along and sure enough, I became distracted by the crimson reds in this maple. Everything was still wet from a rain shower and I was kicking myself that the one thing I did not have with me was a polarizer. Turning down the exposure deepened the color to this glorious crimson and the reflective surfaces looked almost purple.

After some heavy rain, this couple of Rainbow Lorikeets came to deepen a hollow in the Silky Oak overlooking our garden, as the wood inside the existing hole must have been softened by the rainwater. Wild birds are always looking for good, deep enough hollows to make their nest. /

Two hours. Just two hours separated me from the awe-inspiring French Glacier at the heart of Torres del Paine National Park. The air crackled with anticipation – not just from the crisp Patagonian wind, but from the booming echoes that reverberated through the French Valley.

Ahead, a plume of snow dust danced in the distance, a silent testament to the power the glaciers wielded. It was a scene both exhilarating and humbling – a constant reminder of the raw, untamed beauty surrounding me.

Towering over it all stood the majestic Cerro Paine Grande. Its icy crown, at a staggering 2,884 meters (9,462 feet) high, pierced the azure sky. Lush beech forests carpeted the valley floor, their vibrant greens a stark contrast to the glacial whites and blues beyond.

The French Valley, however, held a secret. The weather here was notoriously fickle. A thick mist could descend in mere moments, transforming the breathtaking vista into a whiteout, the path ahead disappearing like a dream.

As I pressed on, the mystery of the valley's name deepened.

The First Settlers with a Gallic Flair:

The late 1800s saw a gold rush of a different sort in the Ultima Esperanza province. Not for minerals, mind you, but for wide-open spaces and a fresh start. Europeans like Germans, English, and Spaniards flooded in, staking their claims near the inviting (name-wise, at least) Last Hope Fjord.

But by the time the later settlers showed up, those prime fjord-front lots were about as available as a happy ending in a zombie movie. Left with the scenic leftovers - the big lakes and rugged valleys by the Paine Mountains - they weren't exactly rolling in clover. Among these scrappy souls was a French fellow named Adrian Bader.

Bader wasn't one to be discouraged by a lack of fjord views. He set up camp on the north shore of Nordenskjold Lake, right at the foot of the majestic Cuernos del Paine and the head of a surprisingly lush valley. It wasn't long before everyone around started calling him "The French Man." And guess what? The valley he settled in? Yep, you guessed it - French Valley, Glacier and River! Seemed even settling for leftovers could have a certain je ne sais quoi.

Another from the hour long performance that was sunset the other night offered many chances to capture the change of colour and texture in the sky - this 20min after official sunset time

"The hush comes with the deepening of Autumn; but it comes gradually. Our ears are attuned to it, day by quieter day. But even now, if one awakens in the deep darkness of the small hours, one can hear it, a foretaste of Winter silence. It’s a little painful now, and a little lonely because it is so strange."

Happy week ahead ;-))

“Suddenly she was seeing the buds on the cherry trees around her;

she could feel the energy packed within them,

a bouquet of fireworks whose fuse had already been lit.

She could smell them, too,

a subtle essence of pink and lollipops,

the sweetness deepened by the scent

of the slowly warming earth below them.”

In the hush of solitude, a quiet resonance lingers, the soft echo of ones own being. Within this stillness, the heart finds clarity, and the soul remembers its song.

As the sun dips below the horizon, the resonance of solitude deepens where silence speaks, and the soul truly listens.

Some years ago I saw this scene in b&w. A few days ago I thought I'd experiment with b&w conversion which I haven't done before. But I liked the bits of color and decided to instead just deepen the contrast. I'm happy (for now) with the way it turned out...

We walked past homes and farms "abandoned during successive waves of immigration that robbed Ireland of its people and deepened its melancholy. Few famine houses remain; people in the Burren were often so poor their dwellings were made of mud and have become part of the earth again. This area was amongst the most severely affected by the Great Hunger, the Irish Potato Famine of 1845 - 1849, that saw a million people die of starvation and disease and a million more emigrate. Ireland's population plummeted from over 8 million people to just 6 million, a loss from which it has never recovered." - excerpted from an article titled "Walking the Burren Way, Ireland" - our-wanderlust.com > 2019/06 accessed 06/06/2023.

Merton had come to believe—that is, to experience and trust—that at the base of all reality is the wisdom of Love, Sophia, a wisdom which deepens whenever we truly love another person. By our love we can unite ourselves to one another, even the stranger and enemy, in the very life of God. While utterly free, gratuitous, and unexpected—“As if from her hand had come a new life”—Wisdom’s embrace is also felt as a remembering, an awakening from sleep, a kind of homecoming or rediscovery of one’s true self held in the loving mercy of God. Once Merton woke up, that is, once he surrendered to this merciful love for himself, he could no longer regard any encounter with the world as “just an episode.” At home in her presence, the world had become for him an epiphany of God.

The best way to see Iceland is to travel with people that live there. Over fifty years ago, I became friends with a young woman who was an exchange student at our high school. Our friendship has deepened through visits and subsequent travels together. These two sculptures have stayed in my memory long after our travels to that marvelous island. If you are fortunate enough to visit Iceland some day, do go to the lovely fishing village of Siglufjordur, Iceland.

It's an awful truth that suffering can deepen us, give a greater lustre to our colours, a richer resonance to our words

The Fossdyke Roman Canal in Lincoln, Lincolnshire.

The Fossdyke Canal is generally considered to have been constructed during the Roman period, but there is a case for an early medieval date. It connects Lincoln and the Witham to the Trent. Its cutting would have involved the straightening and rerouting of the River Till. A 2005 borehole suggested that the River Till may have become redundant before the 12th century, but no firm date.

The first documented work on the Fossdyke was when it was deepened in 1121. It was Crown property until James II presented it to the city of Lincoln by an act of 1671. There were frequent problems of flooding and silting but its use increased after improvements were made by Richard Ellison to whom it was leased in 1741, and son Richard after 1743.

It was deepened in the early 19th century and in 1840. The Fossdyke was used at this time for the transport to Lincoln of coal, lime, cotton, linen and woollen goods, timber and pottery etc. and for the moving to the towns of Lancashire and Yorkshire of cattle, wool, wheat, barley and flour. Craft were sailing barges, horse-drawn and steam packets. The GNR took over the lease in 1846.

Commercial water transport gradually declined with increasing competition from railways but survived longer on the Fossdyke than on Witham. Barkers and Lee Smith were last Lincoln users of river barges, and the last water transport company was Furleys of Gainsborough in 1972.

Lake District, England, UK

Wast Water or Wastwater is a lake located in Wasdale, a valley in the western part of the Lake District National Park, England. The lake is almost three miles long and more than one-third mile wide. It is a glacial lake, formed in a glacially 'over-deepened' valley. It is the deepest lake in England at 258 feet.

Once you leave the eastern side of the Cascades you start your travel through central Oregon. It is a completely different eco system. The land is more arid and the long stretches of prairie aren't broken up by much. Even with all that, mother nature still finds a way to keep your interest. We found patches of lupine blooming everywhere. I just liked the contrast of the old barbed wire and fresh flowers. I toyed with idea of deepening those colors and adding more contrast, but this is what the area actually looked like, so I went with the natural look.
