Antarctic Havn is in the Arctic and on the East Coast of Greenland. This was a late evening landing but the lighting was amazing with the colours deepening as we approached midnight.

One of my favorite memories from Sweden. Stockholm at night, a glow with quiet magic. The city lights dancing on the water, the hush of history in every cobbled street, and the sky deepening to blue as I walked, it’s a moment I’ll always treasure.

I have no idea what this plant is but tucked into the bushes, the reddish leaves caught my attention. In this HSS edit, I've emphasized the shadowy branches I was shooting through and boosted a few sliders in LR to deepen the colors! Hope everyone has a Happy Sliders Sunday!

"Canalized" for part of its length as the Oswego Canal, the Oswego River also serves as an integral part of the New York State Canal System, providing a route from the Erie Canal to Lake Ontario. This section of the canal was completed in 1827, two years after completion of the Erie Canal. In 1917, as part of a general overhaul of the canal system, the Oswego Canal was deepened and refurbished.

After driving through the night from Plymouth, waking up in the van to this view was an absolute pleasure. Sunrise didn’t produce a lot of colour but what a view!! So peaceful, I seemed to have the whole lake to myself. Wastwater is a lake located in Wasdale, a valley in the western part of the Lake District National Park. The lake is almost 3 miles long and more than one-third mile wide. It is the deepest lake in England at 258 feet (79 m), and is owned by the National Trust. It is one of the finest examples of a glacially 'over-deepened' valley. The surface of the lake is about 200 feet above sea level, while its bottom is over 50 feet below sea level. The head of the Wasdale Valley is surrounded by some of the highest mountains in England, including Scafell Pike, Great Gable and Lingmell. The steep slopes on the southeastern side of the lake, leading up to the summits of Whin Rigg and Illgill Head. Thanks for looking.

The latest deepening of the Scheldt in 2010 the biggest container vessels in the world can get to Antwerp easily and safely. A constant depth of 13.1 metres is possible and taking into account the tides, vessels with a draught of 15.5 metres are able to get to the Port of Antwerp.

During high tide, the results of the filling of the Rijnhaven get somewhat camouflaged. In this part of Rotterdam, the difference between high and low tide is some 1,5 m. On the left (bottom) are the New Luxor theatre's characteristic protruding parking deck and InHolland (top). On the right is Bayhouse.

As I wrote earlier, Rijnhaven is being redeveloped. This harbour was created in 1895 to offer shelter for Rhine vessels ('rijnaken'), which could not operate during the winter due to the freezing of the rivers.

After the creation of the harbour, the transit freight traffic to Rotterdam continued to increase, and the new Rijnhaven was made suitable for large sea-going vessels by deepening it. As planned, the Rijnhaven became an essential port for the transhipment of bulk goods 'on stream' - the sea-going vessels were moored on buoys, separate from the quay, and their cargo was directly moved to rhine ships. In de 70/80s of the last century, the Rijnhaven lost its transhipment function and was brought back to its old function. In 2015, the rhine ship berths were moved to, among others, the Maashaven. Enabling the redevelopment of the old harbour.

It will be partly (30%) filled up (pure terraforming) to enable the realization of, amongst others, an office/apartment building strip with up to 200m high edifices, called the 'Skyline Posthumalaan' with an adjacent park and city beach. And there will be the floating Rijnhavenpark, too.

This is number 10 of Rijnhaven - the redevelopment, 348 of Rotterdam harbour and industry and 43 of De Rotterdam.

One of the sports that I like the most is the basketball, which allows us to have a good time with friends and can be played on street courts, not only in sports center. There are encounters about this sport such as Kuroko no Basket, which has been very successful and deepens the relationships between players, the vision of the plays or personal improvement.

Mistaya Canyon in Banff National Park is a scenic gem on the Icefields Parkway. Sculpted by the rushing water of the Mistaya River, which originates from Peyto Lake to the southeast, this deep slot canyon features curvy limestone walls and eroded pothole depressions. One of my many stops along the Icefields Parkway that connects Banff to Jasper NP in Alberta, Canada. Many signs about telling people that there are sheer drop-offs and certain death is imminent. I took quite a few from different angles. It's hard to explain how curvy the gorge is below these falls as it deepens substantially below the frame here. I shot this early in the morning with just a few lingering about. I did manage to capture one gentleman getting out fairly far onto the rocks. 19-July-2020: however the sun has already acted on the layered fog, which I will deepen with the next shots to post, combining it in more dynamic banks of fog, ready to rise and dissipate in the summer sultry-misty air.

The time to photograph these phenomena, in the height of summer, is few minutes after sunrise (I did some shots at dawn, before sunrise, with the tripod, to take a few more minutes), which warms from the first ray and we are talking about 5 CEST in the morning during the longest days of early summer, with the very first lights already at 3.40 in the morning/late night.

The result of a night's work is dissipated in 10-15 minutes.

In autumn and winter the phenomenon lasts longer and occurs at much more "common times" (between 7 and 8 in the morning), but is less frequent due to a greater meteorological dynamism and the frequent influx of the Bora wind (here mostly "in utero") that mixes the air preventing the local inversion and the formation of the hydrometeoric phenomena associated with it.

In summer, as mentioned, the greater atmospheric stability and the scarce presence of mixing winds favors the phenomena of (night) thermal inversion.

The Fred Hartman Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge in the U.S. state of Texas spanning the Houston Ship Channel. The bridge carries 2.6 miles (4.2 km) of State Highway 146 (SH 146), between the cities of Baytown and La Porte (east of Houston). The bridge is also expected to carry State Highway 99 (SH 99) (Grand Parkway) when it is completed around Houston.

The bridge, named for Fred Hartman (1908–1991), the editor and publisher of the Baytown Sun from 1950 to 1974, is the longest cable-stayed bridge in Texas, and one of only four such bridges in the state, the others being Veterans Memorial Bridge in Orange County, Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge in Dallas and Bluff Dale Suspension Bridge in Erath County. It is the 77th largest bridge in the world. The construction cost of the bridge was $91.25 million.

The bridge replaced the Baytown Tunnel (of depth clearance 40 feet or 12.2 m). The tunnel had to be removed when the Houston Ship Channel was deepened to 45 feet (13.7 m), with a minimum 530 feet (161.5 m) bottom width, to accommodate larger ships. The last section of the Baytown Tunnel was removed from the Houston Ship Channel on September 14, 1999, with removal of the tunnel being the responsibility of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

The kea is a large New Zealand

parrot with mainly olive-green feathers, deepening to a teal blue on the wingtips. On the underside of the wings and the base of the tail the features are a reddish-orange. Female kea are slightly smaller than males and have shorter beaks.

Many other native birds in New Zealand are flightless, including the kea’s relative the kakapo. Unlike them, kea can fly very well.

I made some changes enhancing those smooth peachy sunset colours and deepening the blues in the water reflection. The OCD in me told me that the image was not 100% horizontal so after using a grid I decided to rotate it by 0.1 of a degree to make it even and added abit of cloud blur to futher enhance that feeling of serenity and calmness I get from viewing this photo.

The canyon and adjacent rim are contained within Grand Canyon National Park, the Kaibab National Forest, Grand Canyon–Parashant National Monument, the Hualapai Indian Reservation, the Havasupai Indian Reservation and the Navajo Nation. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of the preservation of the Grand Canyon area and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery.

Nearly two billion years of Earth's geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted. While some aspects about the history of incision of the canyon are debated by geologists, several recent studies support the hypothesis that the Colorado River established its course through the area about 5 to 6 million years ago. Since that time, the Colorado River has driven the down-cutting of the tributaries and retreat of the cliffs, simultaneously deepening and widening the canyon.

For thousands of years, the area has been continuously inhabited by Native Americans, who built settlements within the canyon and its many caves. The Pueblo people considered the Grand Canyon a holy site, and made pilgrimages to it. The first European known to have viewed the Grand Canyon was García López de Cárdenas from Spain, who arrived in 1540.

This northern cardinal and all the other birds in the area are likely singing "Snowflakes Keep Falling on My Head" as one big storm after another adds to the deepening snowpack here at Lake Meyer Park.

Three Black-eyed Susans line up nicely for a vertical capture. I love it when the shadowed green leaves in the background are often rendered blue. I've deepened the blue a bit here for a nice contrast to the gold flowers.

Groynes, breakwaters and artificial reefs

A groyne is a shore protection structure built perpendicular to the shoreline of the coast (or river), over the beach and into the shoreface (the area between the nearshore region and the inner continental shelf), to reduce longshore drift and trap sediments. A groyne field or system is a series of groynes acting together to protect a beach. Rock is often used as construction material, but wooden groynes, steel groynes, rubble-mound and sand-filled bag groynes, or groynes made of concrete elements can also be found.

Groynes trap sediments from longshore drift so that the coast behind the sand layer is protected from erosion. Their effectiveness depends on their extension into the river or sea. As any other systems acting on the long-shore drift, they can negatively affect the transportation and sedimentation pattern of underflow areas, causing downdrift erosion. Other adverse effects (especially for rivers) can be an increase in current velocity in the constricted flow area, with increasing bed erosion and a deepening of the bed level. Groynes can also be used in estuaries to decrease tidal flow velocities at the shoreline. Rock groynes can be more effective in this case, as wooden groynes tend to reflect energy rather that absorb it. This depends on the type of wooden structures; in general screens are less effective.

To build groynes, breakwaters and reefs, rock size, face slopes, crest elevation and crest width and toe protections and aprons should be designed according to the natural characteristics of the sites as these factors have an important impact on the shoreline. Sand may build up behind breakwaters and artificial reefs to form salients. Sand can accumulate enough to connect with the breakwater and form a tombolo (a stretch of sand developed by wave refraction, diffraction and longshore drift forming a ‘neck’ connecting the structure to the shore). Considering the significant impact these structures have on the coastal environment, they should only be considered as part of a global adaptive management policy, taking into account the characteristics of the specific site and the potential effects on the whole coast. The construction of groynes and breakwaters could also be linked to a beach nourishment programme, and groynes and breakwaters can be used in a protected beach nourishment approach.

As a final stop on an incredibly long day, I could have done worse. The clouds were sparse, but available. The breeze swayed the canola, at nearly peak yellow. The sky deepened to dark blue. The sun was sinking and I had hours to drive.

I should have captured this in color. I did with the Mamiya, but that's not this.
