As Saturday afternoon unfolded the weather and conditions looked to be perfect. I decided to attempt to capture some great blue hour light of our beautiful skyline. Good news was the light was there. The bad news was the wind totally crapped out. There had been a nice light breeze all day long but just as I got into position the flags went still and the smoke from MG&E's chimneys rose straight up. The wind just stopped and it was all I could do to keep a kite up much less lift a camera. So I came back off the frozen lake in the dark with only a couple ground shots and no aerials to show for my effort but having enjoyed a very beautiful calm and peaceful blue hour.

KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS

The Knights of Pythias, also known as the Union Bankers Building, is Deep Ellum’s most significant historic building. Designed in 1916 by William Sidney Pittman, Dallas’ first African-American architect, the Knights of Pythias was an important social and commercial center for the African-American community in Dallas. The building is a City of Dallas historic landmark, which affords it protection from demolition as well as potential historic preservation tax incentives. Still, the Knights of Pythias sits vacant and unused. While the owners have recently taken steps to better secure the building, this cultural landmark should be put back into use. We urge the owners to either sell the building or take steps to sensitively restore this exceptionally significant landmark.
Deep Space Music combines sound, image, music and computer animation, transforming the Deep Space 8K into a unique sound and visualization space.

Had to take some deep breaths before I could go into work but I'm really glad I did. It really helped me put things into perspective and made me feel more calm.

KINETIC AUDIOVISUAL INSTALLATION AND PERFORMANCE

Deep Web is a monumental immersive audiovisual installation and live performance created by light artist Christopher Bauder and composer and musician Robert Henke. Presented in enormous pitch dark indoor spaces, Deep Web plunges the audience into a ballet of iridescent kinetic light and surround sound. The work was presented as a preview at CTM 2016 Festival Berlin and will be followed by its original presentation at the Festival of Lights Lyon in December 2016.
The generative, luminous architectural structure weaves 175 motorized spheres and 12 high power laser systems into a 25 meter wide and 10 meter high super-structure, bringing to life a luminous analogy to the nodes and connections of digital networks. Moving up and down, and choreographed and synchronized to an original multi-channel musical score by Robert Henke, the spheres are illuminated by blasts of colourful laser beams resulting in three-dimensional sculptural light drawings and arrangements in cavernous darkness.
The installation brings together decades of separate research and experimentation by two artists with unique visions and passions for sound and light, and by innovative companies working in these fields. High-end laser system manufacturer LaserAnimation Sollinger provided the technical expertise and development for this very specific spatial laser setup. The high precision motor winch systems with real time feedback and the main control software are provided by Design Studio WHITEvoid in collaboration with Kinetic Lights. This novel combination of computer controlled kinetic elements and laser systems allows for setting animated end points to normally infinite laser beams. DEEP WEB uses light as a tangible material to construct threedimensional vector drawings in thin air.
The work was originally commissioned by the Festival of Lights Lyon 2015, and developed in cooperation with local producer Tetro. Due to the festival’s cancellation after the tragic events in Paris, Berliners had the unique chance to attend an exclusive preview before the project will be presented in December 2016 in Lyon for the Festival of Lights 2016.
The Artists:
An artist and designer working in the fields of light and installation art, media design and scenography, Christopher Bauder focuses on the translation of bits and bytes into objects and environments, and vice versa. Space, object, sound, light and interaction are key elements of his work. In 2004 he founded the multidisciplinary art and design studio WHITEvoid, which specializes in interactivity, media, interior architecture, and electronic engineering.
Bauder has brought his installations and performances to art events and spaces around the world, including Centre Pompidou Paris, MUTEK Montreal, Festival of Lights Lyon, Luminale Frankfurt, The Jewish Museum Berlin and The National Museum of Fine Arts in Taiwan. He is best known for his city-wide light art installation “Lichtgrenze”, created in 2014 together with his brother Marc, for the 25th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall and his large scale kinetic live shows ATOM and GRID. Both in cooperation with Robert Henke.
Alongside his numerous releases as Monolake, Robert Henke is also well known for the music, audiovisual installations and performances he has been creating under his own name since the early 90s. Due to his background in engineering and fascination with the beauty of technical objects, the development of his own instruments and algorithms has always been an integral part of his creative process. Henke also co-developed the omnipresent Ableton Live music software, which since its invention in 1999 has become the standard tool for electronic music production and completely redefined live performance practice.
His installations and performances have been presented at Tate Modern London, the Centre Pompidou Paris, PS-1 New York, MUDAM Luxembourg, MAK Vienna, the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Australia, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin, and at countless festivals.

The Vast expanse of the Bay of Bengal....clicked this on a boat ride into the ocean from Mahabaliburam
This is my best example of deep depth of field, and I chose this as my best photo for this album. I set my aperture at f/10, which meant I had to slow my shutter down to 1/60 and raise my iso a lot higher to compensate for a good exposure. I had to photograph around sunset and the sun was already down by the time I took this, so there wasn't much light to work with. I had a small lantern with me and used it to help light my shoe. I like this photo a lot because the higher aperture made the details in the tree stand out. I think the texture looks cool next to my shoe. It also captured the light from the house in the background really sharp, and I love how it photographed next to my shoe. In lightroom I had to slide the exposure up. I added clarity to make it even more crisp and brought down the highlights a bit. Then I cropped in pretty tight because I wanted to focus on the shoe, and placed the burst of light right on the left 1/3 of the crop.

You should really watch this Large On Black since that brings out more details. My pictures aren't balanced for a white background and a lot of the finer details are lost in this small format.

Never mind all of that.
Anyway. We were out on Cap'n Dan McSweeney's boat, and we were seeing so many whales, it was almost getting stupid. By the end, you'd see another whale blow his briny load in the air and, sure, you'd muster some excitement, but it wasn't like the first whale, y'know? I'd lift the camera. I'd get the shots. But really -- c'mon, humpbacks. Do something big. Get my attention. Jump over the ship and break someone's neck with your prodigious taie. Spit krill in some chick's mouth. Sink the boat! Sing a song of sixpence! Something.
So, when we finally saw something different -- two manta rays gliding lazily about -- it was like a brand new day.
Manta rays are huge.
They fly like birds under the ocean, seriously. Big wing-like bodies flapping silently. At first, they look like sharks, because those wing tips emerge from the ocean in a way that calls to mind the typical Jaws dorsal fin (cue orchestral music).
But, then you find out -- hey! It's happy manta rays! Giant ones! Swimming around and under the boat! The water out there is clear enough that you can see a 100 feet or so down, and so I caught a capture of a manta that you can kinda maybe sorta almost see. So, here it is.

And it doesn't get any deeper than this! Hampstead Station, in all its grandeur, is the deepest London Underground at an impressive 58.5m below ground. A refurbished 95 stock is seen speeding out of the platform. To the north of Hampstead is the uncompleted Bull & Bush station which was excavated but never constructed.
