La gazza ladra, The Thieving Magpie, is a melodramma or opera semiseria in two acts by the Italian composer Gioachino Rossini, with a libretto by Giovanni Gherardini based on La pie voleuse by Théodore Baudouin d'Aubigny and Louis-Charles Caigniez.
According to legend, before the first performance of the opera, the producer assured the composition of the overture by locking Rossini in a room, from the window of which the composer threw out the sheets of music to the copyists who then wrote the orchestral parts, to complete the composition of the opera.
As such, The Gazza Ladra is best known for the ouverture, which is musically notable for the use of snare drums. Stanley Kubrick has taken the overture to achieve bizarre and dramatic effects in "'A Clockwork Orange". This memorable section in Rossini's overture evokes the image of the opera's main subject: a devilishly clever, thieving magpie.

Shrewsbury Abbey, which is dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul, was founded as a Benedictine Monastery by Roger de Montgomery in 1083 as a place of Christian witness and worship on the site of an existing Saxon church. Today, this building is a place of great of historic significance. It has been visited on pilgrimages by Kings, held the first Parliament, and is currently the venue for the High Sheriff of Shropshire’s Legal Service. It has held a monastery, a garrison, a prison, a Saint, and is still in use as a Parish church today. It holds the effigies of nobles dating back to the Conqueror, and includes such notables as Richard Onslow, Speaker of the House of Commons under Elizabeth I. Its windows and walls still bear the marks of musket-shot from Cromwell’s troops, as many statues bear the marks of his Reformation destruction. It is one of the few churches in England to have a surviving Royal Crest from the time of Charles I. The abbey was split in half by Thomas Telford in 1836 to enable Irish M.P.s to travel to London more quickly, and its buildings are still split across that road today. In the 20th century, it became the home of the fictional Brother Cadfael, and now receives thousands of visitors a year who want to connect with the stories they have read of the Benedictines who lived in the Abbey. Its art, architecture and historical records make it a true English treasure, and an amazing resource for students of the past.
Scrobbesbyrig to the Saxons, the county town of Shropshire is first mentioned in a charter of 901. Shrewsbury is stunning historic town with over 660 listed buildings and some very strange street names - Dogpole and Mardol, Gullet Passage and Grope Lane.
According to the Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman, "It takes a little exploration on foot to reveal the delights of this medieval town."
Dedicated to the fox, this shrine is the head of over 30000 Inari shrines across Japan. A pathway wanders 4 km up the mountain lined with hundreds of vermilion torii gates.

For some curious reasons, this temple dedicated for Lord Siva was built many meters below the ground level. For this reason, almost all the time the sanctum and the core parts of the temple are under water, restricting entry to the inner areas.
A water channel system too is visible around the main temple. But this canal is dry and one can walk down to a point from where it’s impossible to go further.
There is a small temple for Siva’s consort too near the mail shrine. The Kalyanamantapa (ceremonial marriage hall) is great a structure. It has been believed that this is one of the oldest temples in Hampi.
View of the main hall infront of the shrine. The main tower too can be seen The entry to the temple passes through the main tower in front of the temple campus. It looks like this tower was an addition done later on and was never completed. A series of wide large steps along the axis of the tower and the sanctum leads one to the inner part of the temple. The main hall in front of the shrine is huge with massive cubical pillars supporting the roof. The lamppost actually protrudes through the roof. Depending upon the water level one may be able to proceed to the sanctum area.
The temple has a Garbhagriha, aligned with an antarala, and aradhamantapa and a mahamantapa. The mahamantapa has pillared corridors fuse with the pillared Mukhamantapa making a larger pillared frontal mantapa which also encloses a dhwajastambha. The pillars of the temple are plain. The temple is stylically datable to 14th century. An inscription referring to this temple states that Krishnadevaraya donated Nagalapura and other villages for worship and offering to the god for the merit of his parents Narsa Nayaka and Nagajidevi.

Sunset out my back window. ~~~ I did not personally know Brooke Carol Wilberger, but she was kidnapped, raped and murdered in Benton County, Oregon, where I live, and tromp around all over taking pictures. It took almost 5 years for her admitted killer to say where he had left her remains. He did so just this past week. Brooke Wilberger became known and loved in our community. Such a tragedy, but she and her family are of very strong faith, and I feel sure will be a beacon for others. The police in Corvallis, Oregon asked, when this happened 5 years ago , that all concerned citizens report anything at all suspicious or seemingly out of place. Hundreds of us did just that.
I send condolences to her family, and Brooke, may you finally rest in peace.
A series of shots dedicated to the Dannee and Sam\Sanguine first so called “Night to Remember” something that Dannee indeed always to remember the first and only evening when that mysterious Sam challenged her into contest and his brew her so drunk that her memory of whole night was like erased… until recently when with some unexpected “help” she remembered everything…
Everything about their romantic rendezvous was perfect - the jokes, their travel to misty Grove, where Dannee in attempt to refresh jumped into waterfall and how Sam carried her back, gave her a new dress, then the dancing and the romantic atmosphere, when it was just two of them, two people enjoying themselves, free from responsibilities, doubts and fears at least for a while.
However those joking words of Sam about Dannee losing her dress to an uneven battle with the dirt, that kind compliment about her looking like a golden dragoness in her new scaled dress turned darker as his sympathy and tenderness vanished to savage desire, those moments he never spoke with her about of finally revealed… As his darker lustful side emerged with her immense fear what it might lead too… Dannee managed to soothe his fierce desire in other way then being defiled but for her it has been humiliation, then came the fear and almost despair when she realized she wasn't in Skyrim, but in Oblivion, at the mercy of the Daedric Prince, realizing that she truly didn't know who that mysterious Sam was and trusted him so easily but before she could further torment herself he found her.
He didn’t know what to say, she looked so lost and sad, such a contrast to him. It has been so long he felt himself so happy… she gave him such intense satisfaction he didn’t feel for years, like tidal wave, drowning out anything else in the world. It felt so raw and intimate and personal, even more intimate than if he had taken her. He should have been touching her too, take her to his home, to his bed, he thought guiltily, he should be offering her pleasure in return and giving her the comfort and touch she so desperately needs. But he was drunk and everything was happening all at once, the sensations so overwhelming and new that they destroyed any possibility of coherent thought at that time… But it wasn’t only physical satisfaction, she made him happy even by her company. He felt something coiled lazily deep inside him, something that’s just waiting to be given a chance, and here he is, giving it a chance. He’s letting someone in. But apparently Dannee had different opinion… He tried to comfort her until he realized it would no good, he still could make it up for her, make her smile again, make her really happy but first thing was to erase this whole evening from her mind, because it seems no matter what he will say will help her now, nothing but something like spell, that would not be strong enough to erase her entire memory of the night, but it would suffice in blurring it enough to make her second guess its truth, perhaps labeling it as just another unbidden fantasy without anything that may hurt her feelings…
One magic trick and Dannee found that she was at some new magical looking place with her friend, Sam who looked at her with something like affection, like he craves so much more than her touch and company, like he craves her more than anything else in the entire world…
“Why do you look at me like this, Sam?” The last thing she remembered how he brought her here to breathe a fresh air…
“It is just… you made me so happy, and you are so beautiful, dearie, body and soul.”
Brahmeswara Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva located in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, erected at the end of the 9th century CE, is richly carved inside and out. This Hindu temple can be dated with fair accuracy by the use of inscriptions that were originally on the temple. They are now lost, but records of them preserve the information of around 1058 CE. The temple is built in the 18th regnal year of the Somavamsi king Udyotakesari by his mother Kolavati Devi, which corresponds to 1058 CE.
HISTORY
Historians place the temple to belong to the late 11th century as ascertained from an inscription carried to Calcutta from Bhubaneswar. The inscription indicates that the temple was built by Kolavatidevi, the mother of Somavamsi king Udyota Kesari. It was built with four Natyasalas at a place known as Siddhatirtha in Ekamra (modern day Bhubaneswar). The inscription was recorded during the 18th renal year of Udyotha Kesari, corresponding to 1060 CE. Since the inscription is not in its original place, historians indicate the possibility of the reference to another temple, but based on the location and other features specified, it is ascertained that the inscription belongs to the temple. Also, another issue raised by Panigrahi is that the four cardinal temples are Angasalas (associate temples) and not Natyasalas (dance halls) as indicated in the inscription.
ARCHITECTURE
The temple is classified as a panchatanaya temple where apart from the main shrine, there are four subsidiary shrines in the four corners around the temple. The temple on account of its later origin, has perfectly developed structure compared to its predecessors. The vimana of the temple is 18.96 m tall. The temple is built with traditional architectural methods of wood carving, but applied on stone building. The buildings were built in a shape of full volume pyramid, and then they would be carved inside and outside. The basic structure of the Orissan temple has two connecting buildings. The smaller is the Jagmohana, or assembly hall. Behind it is the Shikhara, the towering sanctuary. Later temples have two additional halls in front - one for dancing, and the other for banquets.
The Brahmeswara shows quite a bit of affinity with the much earlier Mukteswar Temple, including the carved interior of the Jagmohana, and in the sculptural iconography such as the lion head motif, which appeared for the first time in the Mukteswara, and is here evident in profusion. There are quite a number of innovations, however, including the introduction of a great number of musicians and dancers, some holding lutes, on the exterior walls. For the first time in temple architectural history iron beams find their first use.
On sandstone walls there are symbolic decorations and the notion of godlike figures that helps the believer in his meditation. The carvings over the door frame contain beautiful flower designs as well as flying figures. Like the Rajarani, there are images of the eight directional Guardian Deities. There are also quite a number of tantric-related images, and even Chamunda appears on the western facade, holding a trident and a human head, standing on a corpse. Shiva and other deities are also depicted in their horrific aspects.
One of the lost inscriptions stated that a Queen Kolavati presented 'many beautiful women' to the temple, and it has been suggested that this is an evidence of the 'Devadasi' tradition, which assumed such importance in later Orissan temple architecture and temple life.
WIKIPEDIA
This is dedicated to anna_bee, who recently taught me my first word of Finnish -- "kuu," which means "moon." (Actually, now that I think of it, this is my second word, the first being "Jumala," which means "God.") I told her this was a great start for me, and that all I had to do now was learn about 20,000 new words and master the rather complex grammar of her language, and then I could add Finnish to my repertoire of foreign languages, which at present is limited to Spanish and Italian. She responded by saying something like "Good luck in your studies," in which I detected just a bit of tongue-in-cheek.
I took this picture at dawn this morning, when I was out in our backyard preparing for the day's bike ride and saw this opportunity. So I went into the house, emerged a minute or so later with camera in hand, and snapped perhaps a half-dozen pictures. I did some editing to this one, not quite knowing what I was doing, of course; but while I don't claim this picture to be anything great, I decided it was worth posting. Besides, it is intended as a friendly gesture to another Flickrite, and nothing more than that; so if anyone besides her appreciates it, that's just icing on the cake as far as I am concerned.
(Update: anna_bee has given me my second Finnish lesson, which is reflected in the new title for this image. It means "Moon behind tree." I asked her how to write that, as well as "Moon over Chandler," and I agreed with her that this choice was the more poetic of the two, in both languages.)

dedicated to Vishnu, this is the earliest and one of the best preserved of the Kajuraho temples. Note the subsidiary shrines to left and right (there are 4 for this temple, one at each corner of the raised platform terrace). Note also how the roof spires rise in succession from front to back; the tallest spire, or sikhara, is the exterior compliment to the interior's holy shrine or sanctum
