Doing some decluttering due to a bathroom remodel. Came across these looking back at me in a bowl of dusty potporri!
The story is gonna be a long one. Please bear with me.
As almost every thursday, for the past few months, I've participated in the Utata.org "Thursday Walk" project. This thursday I decided to pay the birth village of my late father and consequently, my grandparents, a visit. After roaming around on the few streets of this small village (which lies in the province of Antwerp, Belgium, and is called "Hingene") and having taken some shots, it started to rain.I went for a coffee in a brown pub and waited for the rain to end or at least diminish slightly. It got dryer again and I packed up my camerabag and decided to hit the streets again.I didn't have much hope of shooting anything decent any more and was in fact heading back to my mountainbike. Now the village has some quaint little (uninhabited, or so I thought ) houses that date back maybe 150 years and on one of these little houses the door was open and I saw two people, an elderly man and woman, doing things inside this house. The man noticed me from inside and I said hello and asked him what they where doing.I asked the man if he was from this village or was born here and mentioned that my late father was also from this village and the man had known my late father well.In fact, they had gone out (partying) together when they where both young men (somewhere in the mid-fifties I presume) So the man came to know that I was in fact the son of my father and we started talking. The man's younger brother, age 55, had just passed away and he and his girlfriend where busy clearing out the little house where the departed brother had lived all his life.He (the departed brother of 55) had, I found out, had once lived there with a woman ( she to had previously, a couple of years before, been found dead in the house) that was well known in our community for her weirdness and awkwardness ; the woman's name was "Zotte Betty" (translated as "Crazy Betty" ) and one of her sons. The son of Betty, the crazy woman, had lived with the brother till the day they found him dead.
At that point I had to just ask if I could take some photos of the inside. This had to be a one time opportunity.A once in a lifetime chance.I appologized several times if I was being impolite or intruding ( after all, this man's younger brother had just died ! ) but the man and his girlfriend saw no objections. So I stepped through the little door and was immediatly struck by the ackwardnes of the place. How in earth people could have lived in such circomstances was beyond me.It most resembled the home of some horder who never in his live decluttered !
I will save you a detailed description of the state the place was in ; look at the photos and let your mind do the work.
On the other hand, the house was full of memories of a man who must have lived the live of a recluse and now his things, his memories where about to be thrown away, to dissapear.
The more I photographed the interior, the wallpaper with this frail golden color, the odd trinkets and old objects, the more the man and his girlfriend became at their ease and they let me share their thoughts and insights in the life of their brother( in law). The woman even let me take a couple of shots where she was on inspite of her being very wary in the beginning.
I am deeply indebted to these people who have let me in in their personal lives whilst in the midst of a beriefment.
I express my gratitude.
These photos where taken with love.Be so kind as to threat them that way.

As I've said before, neatness and organization is key no matter what you're storing! In this case, I think I better find another home for these soon or they might topple over!
90% of this is going to the recycling bin and a pet shelter or somewhere else to be re-used. Much to my husband's discontent, 10% will remain for crafts and future mess maintenance (I guarantee he'll appreciate that, he just doesn't realize it yet!!!).

One of the things that tends to hold people back when they think about getting organized is that they look around, see a bunch of clutter and think they need to put aside a whole weekend in order to do the whole project.

Taken on 6 June 2013. Big thank you to Jerry Jones for the use of one of his fabulous textures. Image tonemapped and decluttered of street furniture, signs etc. perspective corrected, processed to mono. The building is Art Deco, opened in 1939.

No sunshine today, but still nice enough to make it worth heading up to the common for the daily dog walk, a chance for us all to stretch our legs after a morning of zoom cheder (the children) and decluttering a corner of the living room (me and Nick). Around the back of the big lake was a little patch of these almost Disney-esque toadstools, so round and bright and red. And probably highly hallucinogenic.
Months after putting up this Expedit bookcase, I finally have it somewhat the way I want. I wish the five drawers on the bottom two shelves weren't clear because the fiber, fabric, and yarn in those drawers looks pretty messy. But otherwise, I'm much happier with it than I have been.
See notes for full details. Most of my yarn lives elsewhere, as do most of my sewing books and about half of my knitting books. I also have fabric stored in the basement. Yeah, I might have a problem.
Some favourite books, a bottle of sweet smelling lotion, a box of mints for some night time craving, one of my fav animals - Stripey, a small jar of flowers....what else does one need? There is a small radio too, to listen to my fav night time show - City CIty Bang Bang on Radio City 91.1 FM, but its on the other side right now!
Best viewed as a set. I took photos to mark my progress cleaning up my den and desk. For the most part my house is pretty tidy but the desk can get out of hand as you can see in this "before" shot.
Many of us live in a space, and life, that is cluttered and needs immediate attention. With more and more demands every day, the goal of an organized home gets neglected. We want to organize everything around us but feel like we don't have the ideas or motivation to do it. Here, we will show you how to streamline your life the modern way.
Saving the date
Birthdays, anniversaries, vacations and holidays - there are so many dates of so many loved ones that you want to remember. Why not write them down on a notebook? This process should take less than a few minutes. Your family and friends will be glad of your thoughtful wishes. Saving the date is the way to begin organizing your house just the way you wanted.
Filing or not filing tax returns
Do you wish you had a storage room full of tax returns and related documents that you could access from time to time? No one wants to imagine this. So why not toss those returns after about 6 years of gathering dust? The best way to solve this issue is to convert all those old piles of papers into digital form and either shred or dispose the hard copies, that way you can make room for other things.
Classic clothing is the latest trend
Never underestimate the power of those pencil skirt, sleek neutral slacks, tailored button-down tops and classic denim jeans. You never know when you may need it, so store them carefully. Besides, reusing old clothes is a great way to help environment and save money as well.
Family photos are real treasure
Get a huge frame and create a collage from those family photos. In the event of a get-together, you can always cherish old memories, openly. Design of frames abound when it comes to storing pictures.
Home improvement record keeping
You don't want to be in the middle of a home project and discover that it has been done previously. Take a minute to record every change that you have made at your home. When you sell the house, you are ready to explain everything to your prospective buyers. Likewise, when you have no record of your home improvement, you are wasting money and time. So, the next time you are moved to make an improvement, record it.
Plastic containers for storage
Those old, unused plastic containers can be put to good use in many ways. If you have plenty of them lying around, why not use them to store small items. Not only that they come handy for leftovers from previous days' dinners, they can be used to store things like pins, buttons, pens, markers, tools and much else.
Donating to a good cause
What will you be doing with those clothes that you have never worn in the past 8 years? Electronics that were out of date? And what about kids toys that your kids outgrew? Donate! You can drop off these items at your local Salvation Army or Goodwill or just hold a garage sale at your house. Take an hour from a year to view and collect which items can be donated. Stash them in cardboard boxes as soon as you find a new item that you no longer use. This way your house will be clean and clutter-free.
Today's Daily Challenge is bedside table. I kept mine simple and decluttered a bit. 60 micro on tripod, F11 no flash. SilverEfex conversion. Oh, the book is great - The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. In Explore.
Taken at Beaulieu Motor Museum within the Bond in Motion exhibition. This is the 1974 AMC Hornet X Hatchback that performed that incredible corkscrew jump over the broken bridge in the Bond movie The Man With The Golden Gun starring Roger Moore.
I turned this exposure into 4 exposures, then used HDR software to combine them into one picture. When I was happy with the result I "decluttered" the picture by getting rid of a lot of the vehicles in the background (there was actually a boat which looked as though it was protruding from the roof of the car, and the tail of another car encroaching into the left of the shot).
Finally I used layer masking to get rid of some of the noisy areas of the image, using a less noisy exposure. I'm no expert, but it's amazing what you can do in photoshop with a bit of time and effort!

He was a life long resident of Baltimore and ran a small produce import fleet of boats. One boat was named after his sister Flora - I have a lovely piece of porcelain that she painted. More about the clan as I travel through time sorting photos...
Happy new year, folks!
Now that Bao's cute little face has caught your attention:
As is my wont at this time of year, I've been doing some deep thinking, decluttering, planning and organising, both creatively and mentally. (But not so much domestically!)
I asked my Patreon patrons for feedback over the past year about what they want to see and like to receive for supporting my creative endeavours.
Based on the responses I received and my own observations, I've tweaked my tiers for the first time since I launched.
Apart from making the wording clearer for the Peeping Tom and The Perfect 10 tiers, these remain effectively the same.
Patrons at those levels will continue to enjoy early access to a selection of long-running and limited duration projects. e.g. 'love letters to london', 'postcards from another's life' and 'lost in her own world', as well as early access to the best of my new images within weekly themes and curated series. This includes photos from my new 'wallflowers' series as I create, edit and share them.
However, I've made extensive changes to the higher tiers - including the tier names - and I'm offering some new rewards I hope folk will like.
These primarily include:
- Early access to 1-3 works a month created exclusively for Patreon for those at V.I.P. level and above. These may include photographs, digital collages, physical collages, longer-form writing, short videos, music/audio tracks, drawings, paintings, etc.
and
- Early access to a quarterly themed 12-24 page A5 digital chapbook of words and pictures for those at The Librarian level and above.
Patrons at the retitled Collector tier will still receive a loyalty reward on top of the two new items.
You can check out the new tier information now.
So, if you've been contemplating becoming a patron, now is as good a time as any!
I'm looking forward to sharing new work with my patrons this year, and I'd love you to be one of them!
31/365 Thursday 31 January 2013 - In light of recent news it seems that our long overdue decluttering needs to start in earnest. We have no loft or much storage in general so we're being ruthless where we can. I'll be selling some stuff on ebay. Chief agreed to take my stamp collection off my hands to sort and sell. I started as a child and when other people found out I inherited at least 3 peoples collections. Which equates to a big box and lots of assorted albums. I was never good at the organising and sorting as I was not a passionate child collector. In fact I've probably not looked at these since my teens.

A wargaming friend of mine is decluttering at the moment, and as part of the exercise is getting rid of some of his collection of figures. He brought along a boxful to our club night last week and told people to take what they wanted. So I did. I've had a desire to do a medieval Swiss army for a while, and there were plenty of figures in the pile I could use. So I took them, and spent this weekend repairing, repainting and rebasing them to produce the army I wanted.
And here it is.

I spent the day spring cleaning.....it felt so good to raise the windows and clean out the clutter of winter! I always feel so strong and accomplished after a good house cleaning. The air even smells cleaner tonight. I hope winter is out of here..........sweet 65 degrees tomorrow, come on in!
The time has come and I'm getting rid of my CDs (though I'm not quite sure if I wasn't to part with my Dylan collection just yet). They haven't been used in years and they're just taking up space. Not sure what I'm going to do with them, though; charity shops will end up with most but I'm also going to try and flog some too if I can. Some of the jazz discs in particular might be worth a few bob, but maybe no. I'm trying not to focus on how much I've spent on CDs in the past, but I've had a lot of enjoyment from them and I've still got the music in electronic files. It feels right to let them go now but hopefully others will end up getting the same please I got from them.
Because Mister Sable posted a pic of his Garage of Doom.
Hey, I've been working on it, okay? I mean, the floor is actually visible... in spots. There's even sort of an almost pathway from the front to the back.
Yeah, it's... uhhh... ten oil lanterns hanging from the rafters. I finally hung those up last week, after years of stepping over, and on, them. That hummingbird feeder should have gone in the trash, but it was quicker to put up another hook and hang it out of the way rather than walk it over to the rubbish can. It works okay as a feeder, but it's too big and heavy to easily refill. I'd rather use multiple smaller feeders.
But, y'see, the hummingbird feeder is symptomatic of my problem. I accumulate random stuff, and there ends up being a convoluted thought process behind all the stuff, and that old But It's Still Good mindset kicks in, and everything ends up being kept.
Like, how much of the stuff in this shed am I likely to use in the next five or ten years? Indeed, considering the stress level I feel whenever I try to get something I need out of the storage shed, which I know (because I purchased a blood pressure monitor last month... because I need more stuff, right?) sends my blood pressure skyrocketing just thinking about, how likely is it that I'll even be alive in five years, let alone ten? Nobody else is gonna look twice at the stuff piled up in here. It will all go straight in to a dumpster... except maybe the bicycles. I bought a bike a couple of seasons back thinking I would use it to try to drop some weight.
Anyway, there's a glimpse in to my storage shed of horror, which probably serves as an accurate allegory for the chaotic state of my mind.
Oh, and... most of the actual stuff isn't even directly visible in this pic. It's in boxes at screen right just off camera, and in stacks of open storage containers at screen left.
I'm gonna get through most of it, though, this summer. That's the plan, anyway. Unless the blood pressure thing gets me.
As I’ve been cleaning and decluttering over the past while, there are some things that I just don’t want to take to charity until I’ve offered them to other collectors (even though we all have our own piles). I’m burned out of listing and selling on eBay right now. And truthfully, these aren’t worth listing. But... they might be of value to someone for the price of shipping (which would be minimal and I’d cover).
The top row of heads are hard with glue and gluey hair. The bottom row are hard but hair isn’t gluey yet.
(Taken) The living Barbie body needs cleaned and her hand reattached. Hand is in the bag.
The head on the tall fashionista body is hard and hair is a little gluey.
The festival doll has her upper arms on backwards. So they aren’t properly articulated. But she can lift them slightly.
The camera is missing it’s back. It’s the one that goes with several vintage Barbie and skipper outfits.
(Taken) The Kiddle is in mint condition. She’s not been played with, but the plastic bubble packaging has been removed from the card about halfway (I did it, I admit).
Anyone want anything??
Wooden balancing wine bottle holders made from a combination of quartersawn Red Oak and Walnut. The hole and bottom are cut at a clever angle to support and levitate a 750ml bottle of wine level with the table.
I've been making these for many years and they're currently available in my online shop. Please refer to my profile for purchase information. Thank you!
