[ENG] The Cordoba Courtyard Festival, declared World Heritage in 2012, is a Cordoba (Spain) courtyard contest held every year since 1920, usually during the second and third weeks of May (suspended in 2020 by the covid-19 pandemic) in which the residents of the city decorate their patios with the dream of obtaining the prestigious award granted by the City Council and showing them free to numerous visitors. The Cordovan patio has its origin in the Roman occupation in which the houses with their rooms were built around a patio with a central well, with the Arab invasion the “border” was introduced (narrow strip along to the walls to grow ornamental plants), and with the arrival of Fernando III another plant was added to install the bedrooms. Patios are an effective way to combat summer heat. Other pictures in Cordoba Courtyard Festival album.

Man Mo Temple or Man Mo Miu (Chinese: 文武廟), a temple for the worship of the civil or literature god Man Tai (文帝) / Man Cheong (文昌) and the martial god Mo Tai (武帝) / Kwan Tai (關帝). The two gods were popularly patronized by scholars and students seeking progress in their study or ranking in the civil examinations in the Ming and Qing dynasties. There are several Man Mo Temples in Hong Kong, the best known of which is the temple in Sheung Wan.
The largest Man Mo Temple in Hong Kong is located at Nos. 124-126 Hollywood Road, in Sheung Wan. It was built in 1847. It is part of a complex that comprises three adjacent blocks namely Man Mo Temple, Lit Shing Temple (No. 128 Hollywood Road) and Kung So. The Man Mo Temple, the main building of the complex, is dedicated to the civil god Man Cheong and the martial god Kwan Tai. Lit Shing Kung (列聖宫) is for the worship of all heavenly gods. Kung So (公所), to its west, was an assembly hall where community affairs and disputes were settled. In 1908, the Temple was officially entrusted to Tung Wah Board of Directors. The temple has since been managed by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. It was graded as a Grade I historic building in 1993 and it is now a declared monument.

Jaisalmer Fort is one of the largest fortifications in the world. It is situated in the city of Jaisalmer, in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is a World Heritage Site. It was built in 1156 AD by the Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal, from whom it derives its name. (Rawal Jaisal's son was Shalivahan II; Manj and Bhati Rajputs are descended from him.) The fort stands amidst the sandy expanse of the great Thar Desert, on Trikuta Hill, and has been the scene of many battles. Its massive yellow sandstone walls are a tawny lion colour during the day, fading to honey-gold as the sun sets, thereby camouflaging the fort in the yellow desert. For this reason, it is also known as the Sonar Quila or Golden Fort. The fort is located in the very heart of the city, and is one of the most notable monuments in the locality.
In 2013, at the 37th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Jaisalmer Fort, along with 5 other forts of Rajasthan, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the group Hill Forts of Rajasthan.
The fort is 1,500 ft (460 m) long and 750 ft (230 m) wide and is built on a hill that raises above a height of 250 ft (76 m) above the surrounding country side. The basement of the fort has a 15 ft (4.6 m) tall wall forming a double line of defence. The bastions of the fort forms a chain about 30 ft (9.1 m). The fort has four entrances to the townside, one of which used to be guarded by cannon.
The Eise Eisinga Planetarium was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on September 19, 2023.

The Planetarium Eise Eisinga in the town of Franeker in the province of Friesland was built by Eise Eisinga between 1774 and 1781. Powered by a pendulum clock, the astronomical clock has indicated the current position of the planets via the ceiling dial since its completion in 1781, making it the oldest working planetarium in the world.
When a conjunction of the moon and the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter was to occur in 1774, Reverend Eelko Alta from Bozum published a booklet in which he predicted that these celestial bodies would collide on May 8, 1774. This would throw the Earth out of its orbit and burn up in the sun. Discussions arose in Friesland about this prediction.
To show that a collision would not occur, Eisinga decided to build a working scale model of the solar system into the ceiling of the living room of his 1768 home. A gear set in the attic above the box bed and the ceiling regulates the orbital times of the then known planets with a regulator: Mercury, Venus, the Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. The planets hang in the room like spheres, painted gold on the sun side. Earth features a circling moon.
Eisinga thought he could complete the work in six months, but the planetarium was not completed until 1781. Still in the year of completion, the planet Uranus was discovered. But there was no more room for this outer planet in the Eisinga planetarium.

The Yuk Hui Temple, which is also known as Pak Tai Temple, was built by local residents of Wan Chai for the worship of Pak Tai, a deity associated with the stars of the north and the sea. The temple serves as an important historic landmark of the early development of Wan Chai and as a symbol of the local community’s identity.
The main temple building is a two-hall-three-bay Qing vernacular structure with an incense pavilion in the centre and annexes to either side, all of which are constructed of grey bricks, granite and timber. The main building was built in the first year of the Tongzhi reign (1862) during the Qing dynasty, and work was completed in 1863. It is noteworthy that the completion year of the temple was inscribed on a ridge purlin in the entrance hall, which is something rarely seen in traditional Chinese buildings in Hong Kong.
The main building has outstanding architectural features. The characters “Yuk Hui Temple” on the granite lintel over the main entrance were written by Zhang Yutang, the then Commodore of the Dapeng Brigade stationed at Kowloon Walled City. A Ming dynasty bronze statue of Pak Tai, which bears an inscription on its robe hem marking the thirty-first year of the Wanli reign (1603) during the Ming dynasty, is enshrined in the temple’s incense pavilion. Exquisite examples of historic Shiwan ceramic decorations, mostly portraying Chinese folk stories, can be found on the main ridge and gable corner walls of the temple’s entrance hall. The annex attached to the temple on its left was originally a communal hall, which in the 1950s housed the St. James’ Settlement Boys' and Girls' Club. The annex on its right was formerly a school.
Yuk Hui Temple was declared a monument in 2019.
In 1782, the Bald Eagle was declared the US national bird, over the objections of the eminent Benjamin Franklin, who thought that distinction should belong to the turkey. In 2011, approximately 220 million turkeys were eaten in the US, mostly at Thanksgiving, while the protected eagle enjoys an amazing resurgence following environmental threats in the 20th century. Here's to the turkey, the eagle, and Thanksgiving!

If you have time to view our garden, please click "here", or if you would rather just view my images of Dahlias, please click "here" ,
Dahlias are a genus of bushy, tuberous, herbaceous perennial plants native to Mexico. A member of the Asteraceae (or Compositae), dicotyledonous plants, related species include the sunflower, daisy, chrysanthemum, and zinnia. There are 42 species of dahlia, with hybrids commonly grown as garden plants. Flower forms are variable, with one head per stem; these can be as small as 2 in (5.1 cm) diameter or up to 1 ft (30 cm) ("dinner plate"). This great variety results from dahlias being octoploids—that is, they have eight sets of homologous chromosomes, whereas most plants have only two. In addition, dahlias also contain many transposons—genetic pieces that move from place to place upon an allele—which contributes to their manifesting such great diversity. The stems are leafy, ranging in height from as low as 12 in (30 cm) to more than 6–8 ft (1.8–2.4 m). The majority of species do not produce scented flowers or cultivars. Like most plants that do not attract pollinating insects through scent, they are brightly colored, displaying most hues, with the exception of blue. Perennial plants, with mostly tuberous roots. While some have herbaceous stems, others have stems which lignify in the absence of secondary tissue and resprout following winter dormancy, allowing further seasons of growth. As a member of the Asteraceae the flower head is actually a composite (hence the older name Compositae) with both central disc florets and surrounding ray florets. Each floret is a flower in its own right, but is often incorrectly described as a petal, particularly by horticulturalists. The modern name Asteraceae refers to the appearance of a star with surrounding rays. The dahlia was declared the national flower of Mexico in 1963. The tubers were grown as a food crop by the Aztecs, but this use largely died out after the Spanish Conquest. Attempts to introduce the tubers as a food crop in Europe were unsuccessful.

Tower of the town hall - Pienza
UNESCO World Heritage Site (1996)
Pienza, a town and comune in the province of Siena, in the Val d'Orcia in Tuscany (central Italy), between the towns of Montepulciano and Montalcino, is the "touchstone of Renaissance urbanism."
In 1996, UNESCO declared the town a World Heritage Site, and in 2004 the entire valley, the Val d'Orcia, was included on the list of UNESCO's World Cultural Landscapes.
Pienza was rebuilt from a village called Corsignano, which was the birthplace (1405) of Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini (Italian: Enea Silvio Piccolomini), a Renaissance humanist born into an exiled Sienese family, who later became Pope Pius II. Once he became Pope, Piccolomini had the entire village rebuilt as an ideal Renaissance town. Intended as a retreat from Rome, it represents the first application of humanist urban planning concepts, creating an impetus for planning that was adopted in other Italian towns and cities and eventually spread to other European centers.

The King has been declared dead, and the hands of the Areani are to blame, and with that, Rowia is now in a state of war and chaos. Now with the recent peace treaty agreement with Lenfald and Garheim, the weight on the Loreesi men’s shoulders have only gotten heavier. War is upon boys, and we're right in the middle of it. For the Glory of Loreos!

The Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park(Spanish: Parque natural de la Sierra de Grazalema) is a natural park in the northeastern part of the province of Cádiz in southern Spain. The park encompasses, within its 51,695 hectares (127,740 acres), a complex of mountain ranges, known collectively as the Sierra de Grazalema, which, in turn, are part of the Cordillera Subbética. Other ranges within the park, comprising the Sierra de Grazalema, include the Sierra de Zafalgar, the Sierra del Pinar, and the Sierra de Endrinal. Pinar (or Torreón), 1654 metres in elevation, is the tallest peak.
The Sierra de Grazalema, a karstic region, contains a number of large limestone caverns, including the Cueva del Gato, the Cueva de la Pileta and the Garganta Verde. The Sierra de Grazalema is also home to many colonies of vultures, including a few pairs of Egyptian vultures, a species which is seriously threatened. The natural park was declared a biosphere reserve in 1977.

Water supply in Hong Kong before 1860s mainly relied on primitive sources such as wells and streams. Since the mid-nineteenth century, the continual increase in population and the accompanying city expansion had placed a great pressure on permanent provision of fresh water resources which accelerated the construction of reservoirs. The first water supply scheme was mooted during the time Sir Hercules Robinson was the Governor of Hong Kong from 1859 to 1865. Completed in 1863, Pok Fu Lam Reservoir is the first ever-built reservoir in the territory.
6 sites around the reservoir are now Declared Monuments. 4 of them are shown on the pictures.

In the verge of it's official opening, and with the declared coming of the Blockupy movement to it's premisses this evening, I had to take my camera to work today as the building in on my way there. I was too early to witness the arrival of the protesters but in time for the twilight. Whatever your political views I guess all agree that the ECB new building is a nice addition to the already sleek Frankfurt skyline.

I enjoyed a few trips out to Cossack while contracted to work at Karratha for for a while.
Cossack is an historic ghost town located 1,480 km north of Perth in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
It is the birthplace of Western Australia's pearling industry and was the home of the colony's pearling fleet until the 1880s. The town was abandoned after the 1940s. Many of the buildings are listed by the National Trust, after the town was declared a museum town.
Unfortunately, it appears that Cossack has closed down and you can no longer camp or stay in the historic buildings.
The Inverrary Waterfall is one of the most well-known landmarks in Broward County and has become one of the most popular scenic backgrounds for photos in South Florida. Originally built by the Walt Disney Company, it was shipped in sections and reassembled at its present site.
The Inverrary Waterfall was declared a historical landmark by the Lauderhill City Commission and ACT Board under the Lauderhill Historical Designation Program on May 8, 2017.

The uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park is in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa, covering 2,428.13 km2 (938 sq mi) of area. The park includes Royal Natal National Park, a provincial park, and covers part of the Drakensberg, the highest mountain range in Southern Africa.
The park and the adjoining Sehlabathebe National Park in the Kingdom of Lesotho are part of the Maloti-Drakensberg Park, which was first declared a World Heritage Site on 30 November 2000. It is described by UNESCO as having "exceptional natural beauty in its soaring basaltic buttresses, incisive dramatic cutbacks, and golden sandstone ramparts... the site’s diversity of habitats protects a high level of endemic and globally threatened species, especially birds and plants... [and it] also contains many caves and rock-shelters with the largest and most concentrated group of paintings in Africa south of the Sahara".
Plans to boost tourism in the area include a long-awaited cable car project by the KZN Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Department.
The Drakensberg mountain range is characterized by a high level of endemism of both invertebrates and vertebrates.
Most of the higher South African parts of the Drakensberg mountain range have been designated as game reserves or wilderness areas. The uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park is also in the List of Wetlands of International Importance (under the Ramsar Convention). Adjacent to the park is the Cathkin Estates Conservation and Wildlife Sanctuary, which spans 1,044 ha (10 km2) of virgin grassland and represents the largest privately owned game park in the KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg region.

The Royal Natal National Park is in the KwaZulu Natal province of South Africa and forms part of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site. Notwithstanding the name, it is actually not a South African National Park managed by the SANParks, but rather a Provincial Park managed by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. This park is now included into the Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Conservation Area Peace Park.
The main features of the park are the Drakensberg Amphitheatre, a rock wall 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) long by up to 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) high, Mont-Aux-Sources peak where the Orange and Tugela rivers have their source, and the 948-metre (3,110 ft) Tugela Falls, the world's second-highest waterfall.

The Second Continental Congress officially declared the Bald Eagle the National Emblem of the United States in 1782. It was selected by the U.S.A.'s founding fathers because it is a species unique to North America. Ben Franklin wanted the wild turkey to be the national bird, because he thought the eagle was of bad moral character. The Bald Eagle has since become the living symbol of the U.S.A.'s freedoms, spirit and pursuit of excellence. Its image and symbolism have played a significant role in American art, folklore, music and architecture.
The UNESCO declared the medina of Sousse a World Heritage Site in 1988, citing among other things its preservation from modern development.
Sousse's old city has apects that
made it ideal as a film location. Most famous is Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), where Sousse represents Cairo. It is noteworthy that the styles of Sousse, white-washed houses with blue details, bear no resemblance to the actual architecture of Cairo.
June 18th, 1812, President James Madison and the United States Congress declared war on Great Britain. Battles raged throughout the continent for over two years before peace was negotiated. For Americans, the War of 1812 played an important part in our nation's development. In 2012, America will commemorate our Navy's history, honor the men and women who fought for our freedom, who are serving us today, and celebrate with the world our maritime heritage. As 2012 approaches, Lynx "Americas Privateer" is scheduled to participate in the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 and the Star-Spangled Banner. Lynx will also be a part of the culmination of the Bicentennial events at Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor on September 16, 2014.
Through this commemoration of the War of 1812, the important mission of Lynx and the US Navy will be advanced as we celebrate and honor the contributions the Navy has made in the building of our country while educating our communities on the important battles and historic events that took place on our very waterfronts to defend our nation.
The 122-foot top sail schooner privateer Lynx is a unique National Treasure. Launched in 2001 on plans dating from the War of 1812, the Lynx brings American history back from the past and immerses students in lessons about this nation's founding and it's defense of freedom. The original Lynx played a role in the writing of the Star Spangled Banner—our national anthem composed as the British sought to destroy Fort McHenry and the Baltimore shipyards where the Lynx and sister Baltimore clipper schooners were constructed to run the British blockade.
Seize the opportunity join our journey and help support America's Privateer. Thank you for your consideration, support and making a positive difference in today's youth.

WHAT IS A PRIVATEER? A privateer is a private person or ship authorized by a government by letters of marque to attack foreign shipping during wartime. Privateering was a way of mobilizing armed ships and sailors without having to spend public money or commit naval officers. They were of great benefit to a smaller naval power or one facing an enemy dependent on trade: they disrupted commerce and pressured the enemy to deploy warships to protect merchant trade against commerce raiders. They were, essentially, a Renaissance-era equivalent to the corporate and independent "military contractors" of today.
The cost was borne by investors hoping to profit from prize money earned from captured cargo and vessels. The proceeds would be distributed among the privateer's investors, officers and crew. It has been argued that privateering was a less destructive and wasteful form of warfare, because the goal was to capture ships rather than to sink them.[1]
Privateers were part of naval warfare from the 16th to the 19th century. Some privateers have been particularly influential in the annals of history. Sometimes, the vessels would be commissioned into regular service as warships. The crew of a privateer might be treated as prisoners of war by the enemy country if captured.

History
Work began 1848, declared complete August 1873 by Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII); cost £1,285,000. Plans prepared 1845 for the Treasury by James Meadows Rendell, engineer, of Westminster (previously employed on docks at Birkenhead, Great Grimsby and Leith). Works completed by John Hawkshaw, superintending engineer from 1857-73, John Dobson, resident engineer, G F Lyster, assistant engineer; contractors Messrs J & C Rigby, of London. Local quartz rubble from Holyhead mountain (over 7,000,000 tonnes) brought down by purpose-built broad gauge railway; upper parts built in Moelfre limestone. Originally a second breakwater to S was planned (beginning at Salt Island), but instead a major extension towards NE increased harbour area enclosed.
Exterior
Breakwater starts with an extended and consolidated rocky headland of rubble fill with massive squared blocks to outer revetments. Masonry landing stage to harbour side. Narrower pier runs NW from junction at ashlar drum with rope-mould cornice; massive attached parapet. Broad elliptical string course to seaward side with rubble blocks below; raised walkway and protective wall with oversailing cornice. Cyclopean dressings to inset stairways (with stone barriers) flanked by concave refuges to lower deck; alternating masonry blockhouses with central arched openings. Occasional waisted bollards and inset stairways to harbour edge of lower deck (formerly with tramway lines). Towards outer end is a modern masonry exedra facing harbour. Cyclopean steps flanked by screen wall with rope-moulded turret lead up to outermost platform with lighthouse and parapets. Outer ovoid platform was formerly a gun platform.

Yuk Hui Temple (Pak Tai Temple), Wan Chai
Located in Lung On Street, Wan Chai, the Pak Tai Temple was built by local residents in the first year of the Tongzhi (同治) reign (1862) of the Qing dynasty and was completed in 1863. The temple was declared a monument in 2019.The temple serves as "an important historic landmark of the early development of Wan Chai and as a symbol of the local community’s identity."
Pak Tai is the main deity of the Temple. According to legend, Pak Tai also known as Yuen Tin Sheung Tai (Supreme Emperor of the Dark Heaven) He was a prince of Shang Dynasty (商朝) 3,000 years ago and became a learned Taoist at a young age. His name came to the notice of Yuanshi Tianzun (元始天尊), the Taoist Primeval Deity who invited him to join the company of immortals.
During the fall of Shang Dynasty, the Demon King ravaged the world. The Taoist Primeval Deity then ordered the Jade Emperor (玉帝) to appoint Pak Tai as the Commander of twelve heavenly legions to fight the evil. The Demon King summoned a big tortoise and a gigantic serpent to help in the combat but was eventually defeated by Pak Tai. On triumphant return to Heaven, Pak Tai was awarded the title of Supreme Emperor of the Dark Heaven. Since then, he is worshipped for his power, courage and devotion. People also believe that he has the spiritual power to abate disasters. Nowadays, Pak Tai is usually portrayed in a triumphant posture with long hair, bare foot and clad in golden armour. The serpent and the tortoise trodden under his feet symbolize that evil will never win over righteousness.
The temple is the biggest on Hong Kong Island and is exquisitely built. It consists of three halls with the main hall housing the image of Pak Tai. Flanking on both sides are the images of Lung Mo (Dragon Mother), the Three Pristine Ones and the God of Wealth. In front of the image of Pak Tai are the images of the Sei Dai Tin Wong (Soldiers of Pak Tai) which have life like appearances and are poised to strike. There are also side halls of varying sizes. The ridge of the temple roof is decorated with a pair of dragons to symbolize that the temple is being guarded by the dragons. According to legend, dragon represents peace, good fortune and wealth.
The temple houses a three-metre tall copper image of Pak Tai cast in the 31st year of Wang Li (1603) of Ming Dynasty (明朝), the old bells which were cast in 1863. Furthermore, the Chinese words "Yuk Hui Kung" on the plaque at the main entrance was written by Cheung Yuk Tong, a high-ranking military official of Qing Dynasty (清朝) who had stationed at the Kowloon Walled City in 1854 during the Opium War.
Apart from the main deity Pak Tai, the temple also houses Three Pristine Ones, Kwan Tai (God of War), Kwun Yum (Goddess of Mercy), Tin Hau (Goddess of the Sea), Fat Mo, Lei San Sing Mo, Jai Kung (God of Abating Distress), Choi Sun (God of Wealth), Pau Kung (God of Justice) and Lung Mo (Dragon Mother).
People come to seek blessings from Pak Tai during the Pak Tai Festival which falls on the third day of the third lunar month. The prime of the temple was during the pre-Second World War period. At that time, people thronged the streets leading to the temple on Pak Tai Festival. Theatrical performances in honour of Pak Tai were held. Pak Tai is one of the Gods of the Sea. People in southern China worship Pak Tai (literally the Northern Emperor) because water that people rely on for cultivation and fishing is brought by rivers that run from the north. If the rivers are calm and well-regulated, farmers and fishermen will have good harvests.

Belém Tower is a fortified tower and a famous landmark located
in the Belém district of Lisbon, Portugal. I travelled there in 2007.

_______________________________________________
Belém Tower was built in the early 16th century in the Portuguese late Gothic style, the Manueline, to commemorate Vasco da Gama's expedition. This defensive, yet elegant construction has become one of the symbols of the city, a memorial to the Portuguese power during the Age of the Great Discoveries. In 1983 it was classified, together with the nearby Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Belém Tower was built both as a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon and as part of a defense system of the entrance of the Tagus river and the Jerónimos Monastery, which was necessary to protect Lisbon. The system was initiated by King John II (1455-1495), who built the Fortress of Cascais and the Fortress of São Sebastião of Caparica. The banks of Belém were protected by a ship, the Grande Nau, replaced by the Tower of Belém during the last five years of the reign of King Manuel I.
The Tower was constructed between 1515 and 1521 by military architect Francisco de Arruda, who had already built several fortresses in Portuguese possessions in Morocco. The influence of the Moorish decorative art is manifest in delicate decorations of the arched windows and balconies and in the ribbed cupolas of the watch towers. Diogo de Boitaca, first architect of the nearby Monastery of the Jerónimos, probably also participated in decorating the building. The machicolation and the battlements are decorated with the rich sculptural ornamentations of the Manueline style.
Originally, the Tower stood on a little island on the right side of the Tagus, surrounded by water. Opposite the beach at Restelo, with the progressive southward creeping of the shore over the years, it is now practically moored to the bank itself. It was dedicated to the patron saint of Lisbon, St Vincent.
In 1580, when Lisbon was invaded by Spanish troops in the course of a struggle for the Portuguese throne, the Tower fought and surrendered to the Duke of Alba. In the following centuries the Tower was mainly used as a prison (with the underground cellars regularly flooding) and as a custom house. Indeed, given its height and lack of dissimulation in the landscape, some historians believe the Tower was mostly intended to serve as a customs outpost.
In the 1840s, under the impulse of romantic writer Almeida Garrett, the Tower of Belém was restored by King Ferdinand II. At this point many neo-manueline decorative elements were added to the building. It was declared a National Monument in 1910.
Giant’s Causeway
The Giant’s Causeway is a geological wonder with over 40,000 interlocking basalt columns perfectly shaped into hexagons because of intense volcanic activity some 50 to 60 million years ago. In 1986, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Giant’s Causeway is steeped in myth and legend. Carved from the coastline, the giant Finn McCool left behind an ancient Celtic folklore.
Legend of Finn McCool
One of the legends is that the giant Finn McCool, who was a mythical hunter warrior, used the basalt columns forming the causeway as stepping-stones to travel from Ireland to Scotland to visit his love, a Scottish giantess, in an attempt to bring her back to Ireland. Many of the most popular versions of the tale include a link to Scotland because the same pattern of hexagonal columns can be seen from the Antrim Causeway across the sea in Staffa, a Scottish isle.
The most popular tale, however, revolves around a rivalry between the giant Finn McCool and a Scottish giant named Benandonner, known as the Red Man. Finn challenged his long-standing rival to a fight while they shouted and threatened each other from across the water.
When you walk the Causeway coastal trail, bread the fresh air from the Irish sea and use our imagination, it doesn’t take long until you feel the magic of the Celtic mythology and folklore.
21 February was declared to be the International Mother Language Day by UNESCO in 1999. It has been observed throughout the world since 21 February 2000. The declaration came up in tribute to the Language Movement done by the Bangladeshis (then the East Pakistanis).
When Pakistan was created in 1947, it had two geographically separate parts: East Pakistan (currently known as Bangladesh) and West Pakistan (currently known as Pakistan). The two parts were very different from each other in the sense of culture and language. The two parts were also separated by India in between.
In 1948, the Government of Pakistan declared Urdu to be the sole national language of Pakistan, even though Bengali or Bangla was spoken by the majority of people combining East Pakistan and West Pakistan. The East Pakistan people protested, since the majority of the population was from East Pakistan and their mother language was Bangla. They demanded Bangla to be at least one of the national languages, in addition to Urdu. The demand was raised first by Dhirendranath Datta from East Pakistan on 23 February 1948, in the constituent Assembly of Pakistan.
To demolish the protest, the government of Pakistan outlawed public meeting and rallies. The students of the University of Dhaka, with the support of the general public, arranged massive rallies and meetings. On 21 February 1952, police opened fire on rallies. Abdus Salam, Abul Barkat, Rafiq Uddin Ahmed, Abdul Jabbar and Shafiur Rahman died, with hundreds of others injured. This was a rare incident in history, where people sacrificed their lives for their mother tongue.
Since then, Bangladeshis celebrate the International Mother Language Day as one of their tragic days. They visit the Shaheed Minar, a monument built in memory of the martyrs and its replicas to express their deep sorrow, respect and gratitude to them.

The Pala group (also known as Pale di San Martino) is the largest massif of the Dolomites, with about 240 km² of surface, located between eastern Trentino and Veneto (province of Belluno), in the area between Primiero (valleys of Cismon, Canali, Travignolo), Valle del Biois (Falcade, Canale d'Agordo) and Agordino.
In the central sector of the group, discovered by the Marquis Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu in 1788, consisting of dolomite, a sedimentary rock formed by double calcium carbonate and magnesium, extends the plateau, on an area of about 50 km², forming a huge empty space, rocky and almost lunar that fluctuates between 2500 and 2800 m above sea level.
The part of the group extended in Trentino is entirely included in the Paneveggio — Pale di San Martino Nature Park. According to some sources, the group inspired the Belluno writer Dino Buzzati (a great lover of the chain) in the setting of his novel "The Tartar Steppe". Due to the exceptional universal value of this natural beauty, the geological system of the Pale is included in the site "The Dolomites", declared in 2009 a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Charakteristik

On the day I was declared a survivor by the Cross Cancer Institute I went for a car ride out to the Camrose area and was rewarded by this large flock of Snow Geese. Something spooked them, when 10k-20k geese get spooked they sure make a racket.

Joshua Tree National Park is located in southeastern California. Declared a U.S. National Park in 1994 when the U.S. Congress passed the California Desert Protection Act (Public Law 103-433), it had previously been a U.S. National Monument since 1936. It is named for the Joshua trees (Yucca brevifolia) native to the park. It covers a land area of 790,636 acres (1,235.37 sq mi; 3,199.59 km2) —an area slightly larger than the state of Rhode Island. A large part of the park, some 429,690 acres (173,890 ha), is a designated wilderness area. Straddling the San Bernardino County/Riverside County border, the park includes parts of two deserts, each an ecosystem whose characteristics are determined primarily by elevation: the higher Mojave Desert and lower Colorado Desert. The Little San Bernardino Mountains run through the southwest edge of the park.
The rock formations of Joshua Tree National Park were formed more than 100 million years ago from the cooling of magma beneath the surface into monzogranite, with roughly rectangular joints. Groundwater then filtered through the joints to erode away the corners and edges to create rounded stones, and flash floods washed away covering ground to create piles of boulders. These prominent outcrops are known as inselbergs.

15 September 2021: "Alberta has declared a State of Public Health Emergency to protect the health care system. New public health restrictions will be in place starting 12:01 AM Sept 16."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I believe this was my first drive out to Kananaskis this year. Late last September 2020 and late November were my last visits. Normally, I would have gone earlier in the summer, but we had smoke from the wildfires, which blocked out the mountains. There are certain mountain peaks that I love to see each time I go, so I waited.
On 13 September 2021, my drive was so enjoyable, with all sorts of things to see and appreciate. I had hoped to leave home much earlier than I did, but I still had time to get to the places I really wanted to see. The sun was shining, the sky was blue.
One of my destinations was to check on any little Pikas that might happen to be around. I think I heard three different ones, but only got a few photos of one of them. As long as I see one, I am happy. They are so hard to see, especially with aging eyes.
The Larch trees hadn't really started turning yellow yet. I had the feeling that it might still be too early, but I wanted to make sure that I got at least one trip out there before the snow arrives. Last September, we had a snowstorm on 28 or 29 September!
At one place I stopped, I decided to park in a rough parking area instead of just turning my car around and stopping right by the road. Walking a few steps and avoiding the many small rocks that were scattered, I suddenly stopped in my tracks, completely in awe. There, in front of me, was a wonderful display of Shaggy Mane mushrooms, all at different stages! After photographing pretty well every single one, I walked maybe 20 feet further and there was another patch of them. I so rarely see these beautiful fungi and when I do, there is either just one, maybe two. Yesterday, there must have been around 50 in total.
This was not a birding trip, but I did see about eight hawks, one Common Raven and a Magpie or two. When I do this drive, it is to see the spectacular scenery that we are so lucky to have, and to spend just a little time with the Pikas.
Flamenco (Spanish pronunciation: [flaˈmeŋko]), in its strictest sense, is a professionalized art-form based on the various folkloric music traditions of Southern Spain in autonomous community of Andalusia, Extremadura and Murcia. In a wider sense, it refers to these musical traditions and more modern musical styles which have themselves been deeply influenced by and become blurred with the development of flamenco over the past two centuries. It includes cante (singing), toque (guitar playing), baile (dance), jaleo (vocalizations), palmas (handclapping) and pitos (finger snapping).
The oldest record of flamenco dates to 1774 in the book Las Cartas Marruecas by José Cadalso. The genre originated in the music and dance styles of Andalusia, of much older origin. Flamenco has been influenced by and become associated with the Romani people in Spain, however, unlike Romani music in Eastern Europe, its origin and style is uniquely Andalusian.
In recent years, flamenco has become popular all over the world and is taught in many non-Hispanic countries, especially the United States and Japan. In Japan, there are more flamenco academies than there are in Spain.
On November 16, 2010, UNESCO declared flamenco one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
[ENG] The Igreja de São Domingos of Lisbon (Portugal) is declared a national monument by the Institute of Gestão do Património Arquitetónico e Arqueológico. It was built in the 13th century by order of King Sancho II, being the largest of the time and in which royal weddings and funerals were held. It was added to a convent by Alfonso III and expanded by Manuel I, losing its medieval characteristics. In this temple the beginning of the «Lisbon Massacre of 1506» is located, in which a mob persecuted and killed thousands of Jews accused of being the cause of the drought, famine and pestilence that devastated the country, only the intervention of the King Manuel I of Portugal put an end to the mutiny by sending his royal troops and punishing the guilty with harsh penalties. It has suffered very important catastrophes in which valuable riches have been lost and that have made it necessary to rebuild it: the earthquake of 1531, the tsunami of 1755 and the great fire of 1994 of which its traces can be seen today. España - Ciudad Real - Almadén - Plaza de toros hexagonal
ENGLISH:
Building declared UNESCO World Heritage Site on june, 30th, 2012, unique in the world with its hexagonal shape and possibly the oldest bullring in Spain.
The construction of the Plaza de Toros of Almadén is closely linked to the San Rafael Royal Mining Hospital.
In early August 1752, the superintendent of the mines, which at the time was Mr. Francisco Javier de Villegas, given the frequent epidemics and high mortality among the population and forced laborers in the mines, proposed the foundation of the San Rafael Royal Mining Hospital.
These epidemics were motivated, among other reasons, by the housing shortage to accommodate the seasonal workers of the mines. This resulted in the construction of 24 houses shaping a hexagonal plaza with a dual purpose, to avoid overcrowding in the neighborhood - 4 or 5 families per house - which increased the risk of epidemics, and to contribute, with its rental, with money to build the Mining Hospital.
These 24 houses, in turn, formed a ring for the celebration of bullfighting festivals and was a meeting place for the general population, with a capacity of 4,000 people, investing likewise the income obtained in such celebrations in the construction of the San Rafael Royal Mining Hospital.
Another reason for the construction of the bullring was the spread of the mining works to the plaza where, up to then, the bullfighting celebrations had been taking place (currently Plaza de la Constitución). In fact, there is a winch (mineshaft) located in what today are the stairs to the Church of San Juan. For this reason, the arc located under Almadén Town Hall is known as “el toril", since it is the place where the bulls were enclosed. At the same time, and for the same reason, Antonio Blazquez Street is locally known under the name of "street of the bulls," as this is the street by where the bulls were brought to the pen to be enclosed.
Once the "Plaza Nueva" was built, the project of at least six annual bullfight festivals, with five or six bulls each, was established with the aim of raising revenue for the construction of the hospital.
The Villegas superintendent did not wait for the approval of his superiors to start working on the plaza. In an official statement on August 16, 1752 he reported the commencement of the construction, while requesting permission to hold the first bullfights celebration in order to get the first money to meet the loans granted for its construction by the town residents, mainly mine journeymen and members of the Charity Congregation.
These requests are approved by Royal Order of August 28, 1752. On April 4, 1753 all interior and exterior walls up to the first floor had been built in order to celebrate the first festivals. The rental of the houses, mainly intended for seasonal workers accommodation, began in late 1753 with only 8 inhabited houses and in 1755 more than half of them were inhabited and the number of occupants exceeded 200.
Between 1755 and 1757 the works were forced unemployment of the mine workers due to the fire that affected the mines, and which lasted for two and a half years. During this period, both the square and the hospital itself-which began its construction in November 1755- benefited from the use of a greater number of workers in an attempt to avoid a massive emigration.
The old houses are placed on two floors surrounding the arena, which is formed in turn by two galleries in height, being the lower built in whitewashed arcade and the upper by wooden columns and wooden structure holding elements. After their rehabilitation in 2003, still today important bullfighting festivals take place and it also houses the Bullfighting Museum, exhibition hall, Tourist Office, restaurant and hotel.

"Solomon, I have outdone thee," declared Byzantine Emperor Justinian I upon first entering his newly completed basilica, Hagia Sophia, in 537 CE.
Hagia Sophia (pronounced "eye-uh so-fee-uh"), Greek for Holy Wisdom, was originally built as a Greek Orthodox Church in the Byzantine capital Constantinople. After the Ottomans conquered the city in 1453, Hagia Sophia was converted to an Imperial Mosque, and was used as such until 1931 after which it was secularized and reopened as a museum in 1935. Since then, it has once again been converted to a mosque.
Hagia Sophia is unquestionably unique for its cultural significance at a confluence of faiths (Christianity and Islam) as well as continents (Europe and Asia). But perhaps even more significant than these attributes is the architectural turning point marked by its construction, over a relatively short five-year period. Its watershed innovations, pioneered by geometers Anthemius of Tralles and Isidore of Miletus, are numerous and will be discussed further throughout the images of this model.
Ever since I first studied this structure in my second year of architecture school back in 2013, I have wanted to one day make a LEGO model at my signature 1:650 scale. The main obstacles I had to overcome when designing this model were not only comprehending the complex, asymmetrical massing of the footprint, but more so the earth-tone color palette and the considerably limited parts selection therein. The completed model is likely my most abundantly colored to-date, with a palette of primarily medium dark flesh, tan, sand blue, sand red, dark orange, pearl gold, white, light bluish-gray and dark bluish-gray. I'm grateful to my friends Markus Rollbühler and Paul Hetherington for their suggestions on the color palette, and especially Markus for all the invaluable creative input at numerous points throughout the design process! The model made its debut at Brickworld Chicago 2018.
The Croatian War of Independence was fought from 1991 to 1995 between Croat forces loyal to the Government of Croatia—which had declared independence from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY)—and the Serb-controlled Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) and local Serb forces, with the JNA ending its combat operations in Croatia by 1992.
The majority of Croats wanted Croatia to leave Yugoslavia and become a sovereign country, while many ethnic Serbs living in Croatia, supported by Serbia, opposed the secession and wanted Serb-claimed lands to be in a common state with Serbia. Most Serbs sought a new Serb state within a Yugoslav federation, including areas of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina with ethnic Serb majorities or significant minorities, and attempted to conquer as much of Croatia as possible. Croatia declared independence on 25 June 1991, but agreed to postpone it with the Brioni Agreement and cut all remaining ties with Yugoslavia on 8 October 1991.
The JNA initially tried to keep Croatia within Yugoslavia by occupying all of Croatia. After this failed, Serb forces established the self-proclaimed proto-state Republic of Serbian Krajina (RSK) within Croatia which began with log revolution. After the ceasefire of January 1992 and international recognition of the Republic of Croatia as a sovereign state, the front lines were entrenched, the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) was deployed, and combat became largely intermittent in the following three years. During that time, the RSK encompassed 13,913 square kilometers (5,372 sq mi), more than a quarter of Croatia. In 1995, Croatia launched two major offensives known as Operation Flash and Operation Storm; these offensives effectively ended the war in its favour. The remaining United Nations Transitional Authority for Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium (UNTAES) zone was peacefully reintegrated into Croatia by 1998.
The war ended with Croatian victory, as it achieved the goals it had declared at the beginning of the war: independence and preservation of its borders. Approximately 21–25% of Croatia's economy was ruined, with an estimated US$37 billion in damaged infrastructure, lost output, and refugee-related costs. Over 20,000 people were killed in the war, and refugees were displaced on both sides.

Thoughts on April 10th
youtu.be/3y-kGHO4GPo?si=V3UDiIkdXsuR5j_f
1. Trump's mutual tariff warhead explodes 😅
Everyone chose it, right? There's nothing we can do about it 😅
2. Elon Musk and Steve Jobs are completely different 😃
Self-driving is just around the corner! It's been a few years since he declared that. Tesla, which is still not yet achieved, and Jobs, who announced it after completely perfecting the iPhone, are completely different.
3. Toyota's new Crown is the crystallization of an artist's spirit that is not afraid of change.
The mindset seen in an SUV that has changed dramatically from the conventional sedan.
4. The collapse of capitalism and the equality brought about by the Internet.
The pursuit of rare earths and the destruction of music and movies by subscription services are bringing changes to capitalism itself.
(We're in the middle of this, so we're arguing a lot 😅)
5. How to raise children and thoughts about children who have grown up
Never nag them. Don't make them shrink. Do everything voluntarily.
Be aware of how to manage your money yourself.
6. Just like the change from Biden to Trump, personnel decisions are not related to ability. 😅
However, I will receive something in return for the effort I put into myself, and contribute that to the future. 😃
It's the same as previous photographers in Japan. I'm just giving up my seat to acquaintances. 😃
7. I don't mind dying when my child graduates from college. 😅 Of course, I'll quit my job right away. 😃 I want to go to New York for a bit. 😃
That's all I said while driving.
If you have a lot of free time, please feel free to read it. 😃

### Will Apple Listen to Mark Zuckerberg’s Criticism?
I Don’t Think So—At Least Not for Someone Enchanted by the Apple Vision Pro.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently appeared on a well-known podcast, where he criticized Apple for failing to release an innovative product since the iPhone and for experiencing a decline in sales.
Appearing on a podcast originating from Apple and then proceeding to criticize the company might seem like a lighthearted joke, but I believe he was serious.
Why? Because he now wields a weapon—the AR glasses.
With the support of various institutions and a team of highly skilled professionals, he has likely achieved some notable milestones. Yet, as someone who has been a devoted Apple user since the PowerBook 540c, I still do not sense any real craftsmanship or identity in what he creates.
This sentiment extends to other IT giants that currently dominate the world—Meta, Amazon, Tesla, Microsoft, and Google.
Just by listing their names, readers of this text are likely already picturing their respective CEOs.
In the past, I wrote that Steve Jobs was not an artist.
What he excelled at was weaving together scattered ideas from across the world, expanding upon them, and linking them to the future.
The true creator was Jonathan Ive.
A minority of people may share this perspective with me.
However, when I see these IT moguls quickly shifting their corporate stances the moment the possibility of Trump returning to power emerges, I feel compelled to speak my mind.
The AR glasses, the cars—everything they create lacks a fundamental concept.
Call it ideology or, in lighter terms, identity.
It is true that Tim Cook and Apple’s current team have become more prone to letting slip details about upcoming products before their official release.
I have always loved music.
Artists shut themselves in a studio, cutting off the outside world, pouring their anger, hatred, joy, and sorrow into each note with intense focus.
It’s as if they are entrusting something to their music.
And when they finally release their album, they explain the emotions and thoughts behind its creation.
(Prince, whom I admire, rarely spoke about his work, so understanding his art required engaging with the final product itself.)
Until an album is complete and released, artists say nothing.
It was those artists who moved me to my core.
The faint glow of Apple’s innovation still remains within me.
Not even last year’s widely criticized "failure"—the Apple Vision Pro—could extinguish it.
In fact, it shines even brighter than the iPhone.
Because beyond its cutting-edge electronic components, I can sense a concept, an ideology.
Unfortunately, I will never feel the same from Meta’s AR glasses or Tesla’s cars.
I have written at length, but here is the key article:
**Tim Cook Donates Over $1.5 Million to Trump’s Inauguration Ceremony**
🔗 [Gigazine Article](gigazine.net/news/20250104-apple-ceo-tim-cook-donates-1-m...)
At first glance, this might make it seem like Tim Cook, like other tech CEOs, has sold his soul. But that is not the case.
While Cook personally donated to Trump, Apple itself did not follow the same path as other companies.
Apple refused to bow to Trump.
If asked what Apple’s ideology truly is, I would answer this:
**Apple is a group of individuals who believe in themselves.**
Steve Jobs, watching from heaven, is probably chuckling at this overly serious text I wrote.
A company that does not pander to Trump—
That is Apple. :)
### January 15
After reading a heartwarming article.

8mm film of our honeymoon resurrected after decades.
youtu.be/zH-dG7bMeL4?si=yLF5_f1m-LhAVdPp
We found the 8mm film of our honeymoon for the first time in decades, and burned it onto a DVD.
On June 6, 1993, we got married, and headed straight to Nassau, Bahamas, via New York.
Our destination was the pink sand beach where the late Princess Diana went on her honeymoon.
If you're heading to the Bahamas, this might be a good reference.
The hotel we stayed at was the Ramada Hotel, which no longer exists.
My wife is showing us the hotel room.
But now you can see the beautiful scenery in real time.
When I played the DVD that arrived, it showed footage of our arrival in the Bahamas.
Please take a look if you'd like.
This time, we asked Fujifilm to make the DVD.
I'll post the link below.

Notice regarding "Lot No.402_”.
From now on I will host "Lot No.402_".
The work of Leonardo da Vinci who was sleeping.
That is the number when it was put up for auction.
No sign was written on the work.
So this work couldn't conclude that it was his work.
However # as a result of various appraisals # it was exposed to the sun.
A work that no one notices. A work that speaks quietly without a title.
I will continue to strive to provide it to many people in various ways.

### **Interview and Novel: My Work**
I published a book in the past.
At that time, I uploaded my interview as a PDF online, both in Japanese and English.
Now, I am making it available for free.
More details can be found on Amazon.
**Writing a Novel.**
**Photography Techniques.**
**The Sense of Distance Between the Creator and the Work.**
These all share a common theme.
I put into words the things I felt and left them behind as a record.
I hope my text reaches many readers.
Thank you.

### **Synopsis**
Kei Kitami, a student preparing for university entrance exams, meets Kaori Kamimura, an event companion six years his senior, through social media.
Kaori has come to Tokyo with a dream—to befriend famous artists.
To achieve this, she needs the influence of Ryo Osawa, a well-known radio producer.
During a live radio broadcast, Osawa speaks directly to Kaori:
*"I have a wife and child. But still, I want to see you."*
Meanwhile, Rika Sanjo, Kei’s classmate who secretly harbors feelings for him, is closely watching Kaori’s every move...

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

www.flickr.com/photos/stealaway/54271473379/in/dateposted...
gigazine.net/news/20250104-apple-ceo-tim-cook-donates-1-m...

youtu.be/zH-dG7bMeL4?si=yLF5_f1m-LhAVdPp
