In 1967, Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve was declared a protected marine life conservation area and underwater park. Formed within a volcanic cone, today Hanauma Bay offers a pristine marine ecosystem after the City and County of Honolulu laid out a plan in 1990 to restore the bay, after years of use from the millions of visitors who visit and love to snorkel Hanauma Bay. Voted Best Beach in the United States in 2016, volunteers have a booth located on the beach level to help visitors learn about conservation of the reef and the types of fish that live there.

In 2002 a marine education center was opened for visitors and part of the conservation plan requires first-time visitors to watch a 9 minute video before entering the park so they can learn about the marine life, preservation and safety rules for the park.

The monastery of San Juan de la Peña is a religious complex in the town of Santa Cruz de la Serós, at the south-west of Jaca, in the province of Huesca, Spain. It was one of the most important monasteries in Aragon in the Middle Ages. Its two-level church is partially carved in the stone of the great cliff that overhangs the foundation. San Juan de la Peña means "Saint John of the Cliff".

The lower church includes some mozarabic architectural surviving elements, although most of the parts of the monastery (including the impressive cloister, under the great rock) are Romanesque. After the fire of 1675, a new monastery was built. The old monastery (built in 920) was declared a National Monument on 13 July 1889, and the new monastery in 1923. In the 11th century the monastery became part of the Benedictine Order and was the first monastery in Spain to use the Latin Mass.

The cloister, built ca. 1190, contains a series of capitals with Biblical scenes that originally were arranged in chronological sequence, a design found elsewhere in the region.[1]

The monastery is built beneath a huge rock sometimes associated with the legendary "Monte Pano". The second floor contains a royal pantheon of kings of Aragon and Navarre. The present room, with its marbles and stucco medallions recalling historic battles, is mainly a design built during the administration of Charles III of Spain in 1770. It contains the resting places of the following kings of Aragón: Ramiro I, Sancho Ramírez, and Peter I of Aragon and Navarre

Legend said that the chalice of the Last Supper (Holy Grail) was sent to the monastery for protection and prevention from being captured by the Muslim invaders of the Iberian Peninsula. It is alleged to be the same cup that was presented in 1438 by Alfonso V of Aragon to the Valencia Cathedral. See Santo cáliz for further details.

The monastery is the namesake of the Chronicle of San Juan de la Peña, which was partially researched and composed there.

The town was declared a national cultural-historical site in 1985. Its main attraction is the Cathedral, begun in Romanesque style around 1230. It reflects an unusual mixture of styles: Gothic in the nave and the aisles, and Baroque in the its 18th-century towers. The polychrome statue in the high altar, called Nuestra Señora la Inglesa (the English Madonna) was rescued from St Paul's Cathedral in London during the Protestant Reformation of Henry VIII of England.

Dahlia is a genus of bushy, tuberous, herbaceous perennial plants native to Mexico. The stems are leafy, ranging in height from as low as 30 cm to more than 1.8–2.4 m. The majority of species do not produce scented flowers. Like most plants that do not attract pollinating insects through scent, they are brightly colored, displaying most hues, with the exception of blue. The dahlia was declared the national flower of Mexico in 1963. Dahlias are perennial plants with tuberous roots, though they are grown as annuals in some regions with cold winters. While some have herbaceous stems, others have stems which lignify in the absence of secondary tissue and resprout following winter dormancy, allowing further seasons of growth. As a member of the Asteraceae, the dahlia has a flower head that is actually a composite (hence the older name Compositae) with both central disc florets and surrounding ray florets. 33566

The Cathedral of Palermo is one of the most characteristic monuments of the city: visiting it is like leafing through a history book of Sicily.

It is the main place of worship in the city of Palermo and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Its highly original mix of styles, with elements of Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman, Catalan and Gothic art, is a direct consequence of the presence of multiple populations that, over the centuries, have alternated on Sicilian soil.

The style of the twelfth century prevails over all, the Norman one, although the appearance of the church as we see it today is due to modifications and additions from the eighteenth century.

A highly suggestive experience is the visit of the roofs of the Cathedral, thanks to which it is possible to discover the artistic and architectural elements of the external walls of the monument and admire Palermo from above.

The beach of Basilicata Maratea, the only commune on the Tyrrhenian coast and is one of the few places in the region for a beach vacation, with a population of just under 5500 its ranks swell considerably when the warm weather moves people to a costal cool down. Pictured here is the view of sunset from the road leading to the statue of Jesus on top of the mountain just like the one in Rio de Janeiro Brazil except on a little less grand scale and quite conveniently located near our wonderful accommodations La Locanda Delle Donne Monache.

People have always loved the wonderful setting of Maratea with its rocky coastal views, back stop of mountains, hillside forests and over 20 beaches in the commune it has much to offer so has been inhabited since the 15th century BC. The Romans took over in the 2nd century BC and then the Byzantines after the fall until the 7th century when this area and the sea came under Saracen control, apparently they were not great neighbors so the coastal population moved into the hills establishing a fortified town that became modern Maratea soon after their takeover.

The Normans conquered southern Italy in the 11th century and Maratea was buffeted by the winds of change throughout the millennia from factions vying for control of the south until the 18th century dawned and with it the golden years for the town coinciding also with the golden period for construction when most of the 44 churches were built. Maratea’s fortunes were soon to turn though when Napoleon declared himself King of the South and the town refused French rule putting it on the hitlist for the French to pacify.

DSC04950.

Declared a National Monument of Historic and Artistic Interest in1924, the Castle is the result of a long series of enlargements, refurbishments and additions ranging from the first one carried out near the square ground plan in the early 12th century, up to the last areas built in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. As soon as Ponferrada became dependent on the Order of the Temple in 1178, by gift of the Kings of León, the Templar knights found a small fortress that originally acted as a Celtic settlement. The knights reinforced and rebuilt the walled enclosure in order to protect and guard the Way of St. Jame’s pilgrims ad defend the entrance to the Northwest area of the peninsula. The rehabilitates palace suites host now the permanent exhibition “Templum Libri” on books and facsimiles, graphic cart and authors collections. This is one of the world’s best collections of its kind.

Happiness is a walk in the park with both of your humans. We walked at the local riparian preserve on Saturday morning. Jasper loves it there. So many things to sniff. After a nice long walk, as we neared the parking lot, Jasper none-too-subtly steered us another direction. "We're staying longer!", declared Jasper. OK. A little bit longer, Jasper. Hard to say no, when it clearly makes him so happy. 52 weeks for dogs, emotion or expression challenge

DON JUAN DE NARBONA 1732

It was declared a National Historic monument.

It was a property of Juan Narbona who exploited it like limekiln.

In the year 1738 there was constructed an oratory and a chapel that were the only ones between Montevideo and Villa Soriano

The Estancia de Narbona, (Narbona’s Farm), built by Don Juan de Narbona in 1732, is an archeological relic. Its Chapel and Oratory were the only ones that existed at those times between Montevideo and Villa Soriano. They were related to the Camacho family, and they are near the Camacho Bridge, surrounded by a beautiful park.

Walking under the Jugfraujoch , the Mönch Mountain ,the Jungfrau mountain and the Glacier of the Eiger.Canton of Bern, Switzerland. No. 1385.

"The Jungfrau (German: "maiden/virgin"; 4,158 metres (13,642 ft)) is one of the main summits of the Bernese Alps, located between the southern canton of Bern and the northern canton of Valais, halfway between Interlaken and Fiesch. Together with the Eiger and Mönch, the Jungfrau forms a massive wall overlooking the Bernese Oberland and the Swiss Plateau, one of the most distinctive sights of the Swiss Alps.

The summit was first reached on August 3, 1811 by the Meyer brothers of Aarau and two chamois hunters from Valais. The ascent followed a long expedition over the glaciers and high passes of the Bernese Alps. It was not until 1865 that a more direct route on the northern side was opened.

The construction of the Jungfrau railway in the early 20th century, which connects Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch, the saddle between the Mönch and the Jungfrau, made the area one of the most-visited places in the Alps. Along with the Aletsch Glacier to the south, the Jungfrau is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch area, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 2001.

Mapungubwe National Park, previously known as Vhembe-Dongola, was declared a World Heritage Site in July 2003. Mapungubwe protects a corridor of mopane veld adjacent to the Limpopo River bordering Botswana and Zimbabwe. With its outstanding botanical, ecological, geological and geomorphological merit, it is envisaged that the park will eventually form part of the proposed Limpopo/Shashe Transfrontier Conservation Area, which will incorporate the Tuli Circle in Zimbabwe and the Mashatu Reserve in Botswana.

The terrain south of the Limpopo River is flat with sandstone and conglomerate ridges and koppies. Closer to the Limpopo River, the flat landscape changes into rugged mountainous terrain.

The Enchanted City is a Spanish natural area of calcareous or limestone rock formations formed over thousands of years. It is located near Valdecabras, in the municipality of Cuenca (Spain), in a wide area of pine forests in the southern part of the Cuenca mountains and at an altitude of 1,500 meters.

It was declared a Natural Site of National Interest on June 11, 1929. The action of water, wind and ice has made this karstic phenomenon possible. The heterogeneity of the rocks in terms of their morphology, chemical composition and degree of hardness is what has allowed their uneven wear by atmospheric elements, resulting in a surprising sample of picturesque art from nature itself. To the whimsical and spectacular existing formations we must add lapiaces, torques and sinkholes.

It shares these characteristics especially with "Los Callejones", a place located in the municipality of Las Majadas. Both places are part of the Serranía de Cuenca Natural Park, created by the Law of the Autonomous Community of Castilla-La Mancha 5/2007.

Indonesia declared its independence from the Netherlands on August 17, 1945 in one of the first acts of post-war decolonization. The colorful independence celebrations draw upon the many traditions of Indonesian culture, including bizarre tests of agility and strength. One of the most bizarre parts of the Indonesian independence celebrations is the Panjat Pinang competition where men clamber up greased poles to claim prizes. In some parts of the country they still hang the actual prizes, bikes, appliances etc at the top, here in Jakarta they hang only pieces of paper with the name of the prizes printed on it. Because the poles are covered in grease or oil, one man is usually unable to climb up by themselves as they are unable to grip and climb at the same time – In turn, the men form teams and split the prizes. To get a sense of scale - in this shot the man in the jeans is actually standing on top of another man. A lot better Panjat Pinang photos out there on the internet but thought this was so interesting it was worth posting.

I have already declared my love for Tanfield Railway but I'm going to again. Inside the "oldest engine shed in the world" the volunteers use authentic tools and techniques to work on the engines. Walking around this place is like stepping back in time.

A lot better Panjat Pinang photos out there on the internet but thought this was so interesting it was worth posting.

The Hu yuve yuve yu

It has been so long eating and drinking being merry How strange, How strange

Taking our Great Mongol ancestors names in vain How strange, how strange

Yet, would not honor our oath and destiny How strange, how strange

Why the valuable ethics of ancestors become worthless? How strange, how strange

Hey you traitor! Kneel down!

Hey, Prophecies be declared!...

My photographic art to not only celebrate Chile's independence day but also represent the turmoil caused by inequality that still exists in Chile.

Mi arte fotográfico no sólo para celebrar el día de la independencia de Chile, sino también para representar la agitación causada por la desigualdad que aún existe en Chile.

A Hong Kong landmark and the only remnant of the original site of the former Kowloon Station on the Kowloon-Canton Railway. The Tower has been listed as a declared monument in Hong Kong since 1990.

Government has declared an end to most of the anti-Covid-19 guidelines during the next couple of weeks. Apparently there's less coughing...

Tussilago down through the millennia has served as an antidote to coughing as indeed its name suggests. But it does apparently wreak havoc on the liver. So it must be used with caution.

I've posted an earlier picture of our Sunny plant from Groningen (www.flickr.com/photos/87453322@N00/8650629309/in/photolis...). This one though was taken yesterday in Shaffy's Tuin here in Amsterdam.

Antigua, Guatemala with El Fuego volcano in the background.

As we walked around the city it was this scary active volcano we could see in the distance, but local people seem to go about their business as usual...

El Fuego is well known as being constantly active at low level, as it was also when we visited the city in February this year - 2016.

Antigua (meaning 'ancient' in Spanish), was declared UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
