The most notable feature of the building is the cloister of masonry; but also they highlight the plateresque, in which the figure of St. Peter with the keys of the church, chapels and altarpieces inside appears. The cloister was declared of cultural interest in 1929.

Even though the name suggests a dark beach, you won’t see much in the way of blackness. Black Rock Sands is an open, wide beach with fine sands. The name comes from the area to the west of the beach dominated by a large, multi-coloured headland rock, low-tide caves and rock pools, an area rich in marine life. Natural history is also a feature of the local sand dunes, which have been declared a ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’. Unusually, you can drive onto the beach here – so it’s a popular spot not just for picnickers and sandcastle builders, but also for motor boats and water bikes which have a special zone designated for their use. There are also dog restrictions on the beach.

In 1980 US Fish and Wildlife declared that these wolves were officially extinct in the wild due to being trapped and hunted. According to US Fish and Wildlife captive breeding programs have increased their numbers in captivity to 241. A small group of wolves were released back into the wild in North Carolina and a breeding pair onto St. Vincent Island in Florida. As a result there are approximately 15-17 red wolves now living in the wild. Such a small number of these beautiful animals remaining.

Matera (Italian pronunciation: [maˈteːra] or locally [maˈtɛːra] ( listen)) is a city and a province in the region of Basilicata, in southern Italy. It is the capital of the province of Matera and the capital of Basilicata from 1663 to 1806. The town lies in a small canyon carved out by the Gravina.

Known as "la Città Sotterranea" (the Subterranean City), Matera is well known for its historical center called "Sassi", considered World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1993, along with the Park of the Rupestrian Churches.

On October 17, 2014, Matera was declared Italian host of European Capital of Culture for 2019.

Government has declared an end to most of the anti-Covid-19 guidelines during the next couple of weeks. Apparently there's less coughing...

Tussilago down through the millennia has served as an antidote to coughing as indeed its name suggests. But it does apparently wreak havoc on the liver. So it must be used with caution.

I've posted an earlier picture of our Sunny plant from Groningen (www.flickr.com/photos/87453322@N00/8650629309/in/photolis...). This one though was taken yesterday in Shaffy's Tuin here in Amsterdam.

Tabarca is the only inhabited island in the Region of Valencia and is located opposite the city of Alicante, 11 nautical miles offshore and near the Santa Pola headland. In fact, it’s more than just an island: it’s a small archipelago that comprises the islets of La Cantera, La Galera and La Nao as well as the Isla de Tabarca itself. It is approximately 1,800 metres long and measures some 400 metres across at its widest point.

In the past, its shores were a refuge for Berber pirates and, in the 18th century, King Carlos III ordered the island to be fortified and a town built, in which to house several families of Genoese fishermen who were being held prisoner in the Tunisian city of Tabarka. The walls surrounding the town have been officially declared a Historical and Artistic Site and an Asset of Cultural Interest.

A UNESCO declared World Heritage Site, it is located in Red Square. The vivid colours, decorated brickwork and early Russian architecture make it one of the major tourist hotspots in the country.

The River Don as it flows into the outskirts of Rotherham.

Images from walks along the River Don.

Yorkshire's River Don is a river that has suffered over 200 years of industrial abuse, only to be declared biologically dead in the 1960's. Nowadays with the loss of heavy industries i.e. coal mines, power stations, steel works ,mills , factories and concerted efforts by environmental groups the River Don is now a river of fish and wild life.

Sanctuary of Meritxell

On September 8th, the national holiday of Andorra, commemorates the feast of Our Lady of Meritxell, patroness of Andorra from October 24, 1873, year in which the General Council officially declared it as "patron and special protector of the Principality ». During the Day there is an assembly attended by numerous people attracted by their great devotion for this Virgin.

The current sanctuary consecrated to the Virgin of Meritxell, as everyone knows, is not the original. The old one, a 16th century building of Romanesque origin, was burned, along with the Romanesque stature of the Virgin, this one from the twelfth century, from the night of the 8th to the 9th of September 1972. The image that venerates It is currently a replica of the original.

OSTUNI - The Cathedral of Ostuni, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is a beautiful church located on the highest hill of the city, right in the middle of the old town, in Piazza Beato Giovanni Paolo II. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built in the 15th century, was declared a national monument in 1902

The High Fens (French: Hautes Fagnes; German: Hohes Venn; Dutch: Hoge Venen), which were declared a nature reserve in 1957, are an upland area, a plateau region in the province of Liège, in the east of Belgium and adjoining parts of Germany, between the Ardennes and the Eifel highlands. The High Fens are the largest nature reserve or park in Belgium, with an area of 4,501.2 hectares (11,123 acres); it lies within the German-Belgian natural park Hohes Venn-Eifel (700 square kilometres (270 sq mi)), in the Ardennes. Its highest point, at 694 metres (2,277 ft) above sea level, is the Signal de Botrange near Eupen, and also the highest point in Belgium. A tower 6 metres (20 ft) high was built here that reaches 700 metres (2,297 ft) above sea level.[1][2] The reserve is a rich ecological endowment of Belgium covered with alpine sphagnum raised bogs (not "fens" as the name would imply) both on the plateau and in the valley basin; the bogs, which are over 10,000 years old, with their unique subalpine flora, fauna and microclimate, are key to the conservation work of the park.

In 1966, the European Council awarded the "Diploma of Conservation" to the High Fens, for their ecological value.

TUNNEL TO FREEDOM (BELOW THE WOODEN LID) ... ESTANCIA Y CAPILLA NARBONA ... DON JUAN DE NARBONA 1732 ...

It was declared a National Historic monument.

It was a property of Juan Narbona who exploited both limestone and slaves.

In the year 1738 there was constructed an oratory and a chapel that were the only ones between Montevideo and Villa Soriano. The wooden lid at the floor led to a tunnel which conducted to the river to escape from indian attacks

The Estancia de Narbona, (Narbona’s Farm), built by Don Juan de Narbona in 1732, is an archeological relic. Its Chapel and Oratory were the only ones that existed at those times between Montevideo and Villa Soriano. They were related to the Camacho family, and they are near the Camacho Bridge, surrounded by a beautiful park.

The Plitvice lakes were entered in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.

Wadi Run desert, Jordania

Wadi Rum is a protected area covering 720 square kilometers of dramatic desert wilderness in the south of Jordan. Huge mountains of sandstone and granite emerge, sheer-sided, from wide sandy valleys to reach heights of 1700 meters and more. Narrow canyons and fissures cut deep into the mountains and many conceal ancient rock drawings etched by the peoples of the desert over millennia. Bedouin tribes still live among the mountains of Rum and their large goat-hair tents are a special feature of the landscape

To safeguard its unique desert landscape, Wadi Rum was declared a protected area in1998 and an intensive conservation programme is now underway.

New Zealand's Government just declared a Climate Emergency. Many moons ago I wondered when the greenies might notice that Train 920 carries a long string of coal containers on the back each day from Invercargill up to the milk drying plant near Temuka.

Well, today they did, and as the train came past Dunedin Station, protesters forced it to stop, and chained themselves to the tracks. After 8 hours, their point was made and the train continued, giving us a rare late afternoon northbound to follow in some wild weather. After a long day with little to show for it, the sun poked through the clouds just south of Timaru just before sunset.

“Lest we forget” – three very simple, yet also very powerful words. First used in an 1897 poem written by Rudyard Kipling called “Recessional”, to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, they caution us to be careful not to forget.

As we take a moment this Armistice Day to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our peace, prosperity and stability, and those who fight today to protect us still, let us also hope that conflicts around the world will come to a swift conclusion, not least of all in Ukraine and in Gaza

Armistice Day or Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth member states since the end of the First World War to honour armed forces members who have died in the line of duty. It falls on the 11th of November every year. Remembrance Day is marked at eleven o’clock (the time that the armistice was declared) with a minute’s silence to honour the fallen. Following a tradition inaugurated by King George V in 1919, the day is also marked by war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries.

The Sand Dunes area of Maspalomas was declared a protected landscape by UNESCO and protected as a nature reserve since 1987.

Hotel Paris in Prague, built in 1904 by architect Jan Vejrych, is a prime example of Art Nouveau with neo-Gothic elements. Its richly decorated interiors, designed by Antonín Pfeifer and featuring ceramic mosaics by Josef Köhler, reflect the elegance of the Belle Époque. The hotel has remained in the Brandejs family since its inception and was declared a historical monument in 1984. After being returned to the family in 1991 following the Velvet Revolution, it was carefully restored to preserve its original character. Located near the Powder Tower and Municipal House, it continues to offer a luxurious and timeless experience in the heart of Prague.

Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln

The Cloisters

Lincoln Cathedral sits on high ground overlooking the city, building work on the cathedral commenced in 1088 and continued in several phases throughout the medieval period, originally the three towers had slate spires, the spire on the central tower reputedly made the cathedral the tallest building in the world for 238 years between 1311 and 1549 when the spire was blow off in a storm, it was never placed.

The eminent Victorian writer John Ruskin declared: "I have always held... that the cathedral of Lincoln is out and out the most precious piece of architecture in the British Isles and roughly speaking worth any two other cathedrals we have.

Klein famously declared the blue sky to be his first artwork and from there continued finding radical new ways to represent the infinite and immaterial in his works. One such strategy was monochrome abstraction—the use of one color over an entire canvas. Klein saw monochrome painting as an “open window to freedom, as the possibility of being immersed in the immeasurable existence of color.” Although he used a range of colors, his most iconic works often featured International Klein Blue, a shade of pure ultramarine that Klein claimed to have invented and trademarked. He used materials like water, fire, and air to construct his works and staged a “leap into the void” for a self-published newspaper.

The Enchanted City is a Spanish natural area of calcareous or limestone rock formations formed over thousands of years. It is located near Valdecabras, in the municipality of Cuenca (Spain), in a wide area of pine forests in the southern part of the Cuenca mountains and at an altitude of 1,500 meters.

It was declared a Natural Site of National Interest on June 11, 1929. The action of water, wind and ice has made this karstic phenomenon possible. The heterogeneity of the rocks in terms of their morphology, chemical composition and degree of hardness is what has allowed their uneven wear by atmospheric elements, resulting in a surprising sample of picturesque art from nature itself. To the whimsical and spectacular existing formations we must add lapiaces, torques and sinkholes.

It shares these characteristics especially with "Los Callejones", a place located in the municipality of Las Majadas. Both places are part of the Serranía de Cuenca Natural Park, created by the Law of the Autonomous Community of Castilla-La Mancha 5/2007.

The Giant's Causeway (Irish: Clochán an Aifir) is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. It is located in County Antrim on the north coast of Northern Ireland, about three miles (4.8 km) northeast of the town of Bushmills.

It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 and a national nature reserve by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland in 1987. In a 2005 poll of Radio Times readers, the Giant's Causeway was named the fourth-greatest natural wonder in the United Kingdom.

The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. Most of the columns are hexagonal, although some have four, five, seven, or eight sides. The tallest are about 12 metres (39 ft) high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 28 metres (92 ft) thick in places.

Much of the Giant's Causeway and Causeway Coast World Heritage Site is owned and managed by the National Trust. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Northern Ireland, receiving over 998,000 visitors in 2019. Access to the Giant's Causeway is free of charge: it is not necessary to go via the visitor centre, which charges a fee. The remainder of the site is owned by the Crown Estate and several private landowners. Wikipedia

Crested Butte declared itself as Colorado's Wildflower Capital, and each summer they host a Wildflower Festival. I always head that way in summer, for it is grand. Here, columbines (Aquilegia canadensis) stand nearly 5 feet tall in a lush forest.

Small chapel in Dolomite Mountains near Passo Falzarego, from where we will take the cable car to the top of Monte Lagazuoi :)

The Dolomite Mountains (the Dolomites) are a mountain range in northeastern Italy, part of the Southern Limestone Alps. They are in the regions of Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The Dolomites are mostly made up of exposed rocks – limestones and dolomites and partly – rhyolites. These mountains are characterized by very picturesque terrain caused by their erosion and they are considered one of the most attractive mountain landscapes in the world. A large number of jagged ridges, peaks and rock towers, very steep slopes, cliffs and large vertical rock walls of several hundred meters, deep valleys and karst phenomena create a spectacular landscape. On 26 June 2009, the Dolomites were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The UNESCO declared the medina of Sousse a World Heritage Site in 1988, citing among other things its preservation from modern development.

Sousse's old city has apects that

made it ideal as a film location. Most famous is Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), where Sousse represents Cairo. It is noteworthy that the styles of Sousse, white-washed houses with blue details, bear no resemblance to the actual architecture of Cairo.

Paraje "Siete Puentes"

Paraje "Siete Puentes"

This place is located in the limits of the parties of Coronel Dorrego and Rosales, for sure, between the Falcon and Paso Mayor stations, the branch was closed more than thirty years ago and is known as Paraje Siete Puentes, and belonged to the Railroad Rosario - Puerto Belgrano. It is an open board structure, consisting of 7 sections, 6 of them of the same length, formed by lateral beams reticulated with parallel cords, and a section of shorter length, adding the whole 266 meters. The sections support brick pillars. This branch was operated by French capitals. The Council of Deliberation of Coronel Rosales declared it historical heritage, it is expected at the moment that the National Congress does the same, since it is a structure that in ancient times was the guiding axis of communication between the port of Bahía Blanca and the rest from the country.

The USFW declared war on this bird in the Columbia River and was wiping out nesting colonies, having decided they were destroying too many salmon fingerlings. Truth is, the salmon is endangered by warmer waters, dams, overfishing, and the fact that fishery-raised salmon are just too visible! I don't know if they are still doing this, as of 2020 they were. And they are also killing sea lions because they have the audacity to eat salmon. I decided in 2015 that I would never, ever, eat salmon again. Because I'd rather see a beautiful, live, cormorant (or sea lion), than have a tasty meal.

(Now I will step off my soap box.)

After Sunny declared the pink and orange polka dotted Levitation dress for herself, I thought Poppy deserved a dress of her very own from Nina's lovely "Bright" collection. I think now both girls are pleased. :)

Utah's First National Monument.

Declared a National Monument in 1908, this bridge is one of three in Natural Bridges Monument, named "Kachina," "Owachomo" and "Sipapu" in honor of the ancestral Puebloans who once made this place their home.

People repeatedly occupied and abandoned Natural Bridges during prehistoric times. They first began using this area during the Archaic period, from the year 7000 BCE (Before Common Era) to 500 CE (Common Era). Only the rock art and stone tools left by hunter-gatherer groups reveal that humans lived here then. Around 700 CE, ancestors of modern Puebloan people moved onto the mesa tops to dry farm and later left as the natural environment changed.

Since Beachy declared today as "Flare Friday", we turn the way back machine to 40 years ago to post a shot of the ultimate flared locomotive, the Union Pacific DDA40X Centennial. Here are three EMD "flares" rounding the curve at Lakepoint, Utah with two Frisco SD45's trailing the DDA40X. You can see the Great Salt Lake above the train. The train is the "SPRV" (Supervan) from North Platte to Los Angeles, one of the hottest trains on the railroad. At this time only 8 of the 47 Centennials were still in service and I spent my two week vacation getting as many photos of them as I could.
