The former Bank of Pilot Mountain building is the most architecturally significant commercial structure in Pilot Mountain. Built in 1900, it is also one of the oldest. With its decorative brickwork, round-arched window openings, curved Flemish parapets, and comer domed turret, it forms an unusual commercial example of the Queen Anne style unique in Surry County. With these features, it is one of the most architecturally distinctive buildings in Pilot Mountain that conveys a strong sense of its early nineteenth-century historic and architectural character.

Additionally, the building's long association with the banking industry makes it the most prominent landmark in the commercial history of Pilot Mountain, a small, piedmont North Carolina town originally known as the Toms Creek settlement. With the coming of the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad in 1888, the town of Pilot Mountain (incorporated 1889) rapidly became a manufacturing and trading center for southeastern Surry County. To provide the financial services needed by the developing community, a group of local businessmen established the Pilot Bank and Trust Company as the town's first bank. In 1900, the bank erected an impressive building at the main intersection of town that reflected the bank's importance to the community. Although the Pilot Bank and Trust Company closed after only a decade, it was followed in 1914 by the establishment of the longest-lived bank in town, the Bank of Pilot Mountain, which occupied the building for three quarters of a century. Throughout the years that the building at 100 E. Main Street served primarily as a bank, but in later years it also housed a variety of stores and professional offices.

For its architectural character and link to the commercial banking history of Pilot Mountain, this building was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) on December 1, 1997. All of the information above (and much more) was found on the original documents submitted for listing consideration that can be viewed here:

2024 was one of the hardest years of my life.

I learned so much about myself - strengths and weaknesses.

I broke myself repeatedly to form a more solid me.

I sacrificed true love on an altar of commitment.

I watched generations wither and stepped into the gap.

I gained beautiful flowers in my garden of friends.

I froze in the face of trial and closed within myself.

I created from the depths of my agony.

I screamed in silence for dreams unfulfilled.

I stepped up and made the choice - God over everything else.

I struggled out of the pit of surviving.

I don't know what 2025 holds.

But I know there will be continued pain... continued longing...continued moments of falling and picking myself back up. Moments of showing up for myself in solitude. Moments of nostalgia... and memory... that crush the air from my very chest.

And likely...Grief.

But through it all...

I will continue to persevere as best I can.

I will continue to cry out to God in my confusion and gain clarity.

I will continue to soak up the sun and dance in the rain.

I will continue to find small joys in the birds song.

I will continue to breathe in and out.

I will continue to believe.

I will continue to live.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Jeremiah 29:11

Dandelions are once again sprouting up all over, prompting the city, lawn-care specialists and amateur gardeners alike to again declare war on the broad leaf weed.

A dandelion is really many tiny flowers bunched together.

Each little flower becomes a seed...

We don't like them in our gardens.

AND YET: The dandelion plant is a beneficial weed, with a wide range of uses, and is even a good companion plant for gardening.

Its taproot will bring up nutrients for shallower-rooting plants, and add minerals and nitrogen to soil.

It is also known to attract pollinating insects and release ethylene gas which helps fruit to ripen.

Taraxacum seeds are an important food source for certain birds.

Great in a salad etc...

Enjoy and make the BEST of every day! Thank you, M, (*_*)

After declaring to a number of people that I wasn't going to be shooting pictures of fireworks this year, I went out tonight and took pictures of fireworks.

The 4th of July festivities continued for the Space Coast tonight with fireworks on the beach in Cocoa Beach, Florida. A bunch of people came to watch.

(Picture taken July 5, 2018, with apologies for the delayed post.)

19 “The heavens tell of the glory of God;

And their expanse declares the work of His hands.

2 Day to day pours forth speech,

And night to night reveals knowledge.

3 There is no speech, nor are there words;

Their voice is not heard.

4 Their line has gone out into all the earth,

And their words to the end of the world.

In them He has placed a tent for the sun,

5 Which is like a groom coming out of his chamber;

It rejoices like a strong person to run his course.

6 Its rising is from one end of the heavens,

And its circuit to the other end of them;

And there is nothing hidden from its heat.

7 The Law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul;

The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.

8 The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart;

The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.

9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever;

The judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether.

10 They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much pure gold;

Sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.

11 Moreover, Your servant is warned by them;

In keeping them there is great reward.

12 Who can discern his errors? Acquit me of hidden faults.

13 Also keep Your servant back from presumptuous sins;

Let them not rule over me;

Then I will be innocent,

And I will be blameless of great wrongdoing.

14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart

Be acceptable in Your sight,

Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.”

Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) Male

Habitat : Marshes

Food : Insects

Nesting : Scrub

Behavior : Ground Forager

Conservation : Low Concern

"One of the most abundant birds across North America, and one of the most boldly colored, the Red-winged Blackbird is a familiar sight atop cattails, along soggy roadsides, and on telephone wires. Glossy-black males have scarlet-and-yellow shoulder patches they can puff up or hide depending on how confident they feel. Females are a subdued, streaky brown, almost like a large, dark sparrow. Their early and tumbling song are happy indications of the return of spring... Male Red-winged Blackbirds fiercely defend their territories during the breeding season, spending more than a quarter of daylight hours in territory defense. He chases other males out of the territory and attacks nest predators, sometimes going after much larger animals, including horses and people."

An eerie silence in the Feather River Canyon is broken by the sound of Norfolk Southern 1073 leading a lengthy intermodal train through Pulga, California. The NS 1073 is dedicated to the failed Penn Central Railroad. The Penn Central was created by the merger of the Pennsylvania and New York Central Railroads. The Penn Central Railroad only operated between 1968 and 1976 before declaring bankruptcy. It was then merged into the ConRail Company, which was later merged into the Norfolk Southern and CSX networks.

Recent heavy rains wreaked havoc on the Feather River Canyon. Due to a rock slide and derailment near Belden, Union Pacific’s Canyon Subdivision had been out of service for nearly a week. Highway 70 was also closed due to rock slides. Union Pacific and BNSF were forced to detour all trains via Donner Pass and the Shasta Route. The NS 1073 was one of the first trains to run through the canyon once the derailment was mitigated.

I do hereby declare that the Tropical Kingbird, first found here three years ago, is now a resident and constant pest to the resident Red-shouldered Hawks. Three of my last Red-shouldered Hawk shots were taken as they were buzzed by the Tropical Kingbird.

This is the only shot I've ever used a vignette for. There was just something about a full crop that didn't look right... Besides that, I want my money's worth out of my 2004 software!

For PEACE, always..

The meaning of mandala comes from Sanskrit meaning "circle."

Even though it may be dominated by squares or triangles, a mandala has a concentric structure. Mandalas offer balancing visual elements, symbolising unity and harmony.

The goal of the mandala is to serve as a tool on our spiritual journey as it symbolises cosmic and psychic order.

The Hindus were one of the first people to use a mandala as a spiritual tool, but the mandalas most individuals are familiar with, are ones made by Buddhists.

These duo-toned roses are small and dainty and non-fragrant.

Thank you and have a peaceful day, M, (*_*)

Ciao Guido!

One of the most interesting thing in Flickr is this: you can improve your style simply by observing (and admiring) pictures of your friends. That's why I officially declare that I took inspiration for this picture from grdr.ingegnere! Hi, Guido!

He would declare and could himself believe

That the birds there in all the garden round

From having heard the daylong voice of Eve

Had added to their own an oversound,

Her tone of meaning but without the words.

Admittedly an eloquence so soft

Could only have had an influence on birds

When call or laughter carried it aloft.

Be that as may be, she was in their song.

Moreover her voice upon their voices crossed

Had now persisted in the woods so long

That probably it never would be lost.

Never again would birds' song be the same.

And to do that to birds was why she came.

Not in the mood for a comment? I'm also happy

Located on Maple Street in Lebanon, Tennessee, the Nashville & Eastern Train Depot was originally built by the Tennessee Central Railroad (1893 - 1968). I have no idea when this particular building was built but a decent guess would be sometime prior to 1968 when Tennessee Central went under. I do not know what its use is today but it still appears to be in excellent shape.

Image was taken during my trek to photograph all 95 county courthouses across my home state of Tennessee...now revisiting in order that the courthouses were photographed!
