the purple troll is.
Nex time I post pictures should be from Buenos Aires.
Mañana empiezo el largo viaje a Buenos Aires, las próximas fotos van a ser desde Argentina. Y me llevo al trol violeta (porque es el más chiquito).
It's hard for me to decide if Mossy Grotto Falls or Panther Creek Falls is my favorite waterfall in the northwest. Panther is big and powerful, Mossy Grotto much smaller and subtle. But, there's something about Mossy Grotto that I just love. The two symmetrical ridges form a perfect V where the water cascades down and the rest of the creek meanders around beautiful lush scenery in spring. It's a really special place. I probably had the most fun photographing this one out of all the falls I visited this spring. Pretty straightforward shot, although I did blend in a different exposure for the ferns on the right. I was very close to the ferns so I used an exposure at a different focal length and also bumped my ISO up to ensure I could use a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the ferns.

Deciding whether or not to drag myself out of bed before dawn and drive over to the Marin Headlands, just on the off chance that the weather may be doing something interesting, is always a tough call. I'm glad I did it this morning though - the fog put on a great show.

can't decide between this and the 3rd shot so I thought I'd put them together as an evolving sunrise. they're all the same shot just processed to a different temperature
Couldn't decide which one to include from the numerous shots I took on the far side of th elake so have included two of them.

"The thing about trains... it doesn't matter where they're going. What matters is deciding to get on." So said Tom Hanks character as the train's conductor in the movie "Polar Express". This little girl just decided to get on. After I shot this, she was whisked up into the cab of Pere Marquette 1225 which was leading the real Polar Express, and just like that, rode off into the night for her very own cab ride. I guess the movie was pretty accurate after all.

Imagine that you decide to move west to Wyoming. You pack up all of your belongings into covered wagons that are more than likely powered by oxen. You brave the sweltering heat of summer and try to stay warm on those frigid nights on the plains. Along the way you see the beauty of the American landscape, but with that beauty comes a ruggedness that many will not overcome. Finally you reach your destination with the magnificent Grand Tetons of the Rockies as your backdrop. You think about relaxing, but no, housing has to be built and food and water needs to be found. Somehow, you survive and raise a family in this location.
These are my fictional thoughts of what might have happened as I compose photos of the John Moulton Homestead. I wonder if I would have survived such a trip without a supermarket to buy food from, a car to get around, a computer to find out what is going on, electricity to power all of my modern conveniences, etc (the list goes on and on). Probably not, but standing in front of these remaining houses and barns with the majestic mountains in the background, I think I might have tried. Just think of waking up every morning and seeing what Mother Nature would have in store for me. I guess for me, shooting photos in this wonderful place is a trip through time that leaves me wondering what really happened.

"All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." J.R.R. Tolkien.
I have to admit that I love appreciating the work of other artists to find inspiration. I have always admired painters, singers, writers, sculptors ... and of course other photographers. I have spent many hours looking for images of places that I would like to visit someday. And I have no problem in recognizing that sometimes certain compositions remain in my retina and greatly influence me when I take my own photographs. It is not about copying the work of others, it is about making your own version of certain well-known places.
For example, years ago I found images of a photographer named Alonso Díaz, who showed the forest of La Sauceda, and since then I knew that someday I had to visit it to photograph this small waterfall that he immortalized, as well as many others that are found in this magical place. For the post-processing this time and without leaving my style, I have been inspired slightly in the elven forests of the novels and fantasy movies, because at times, between shot and shot, it seemed that these beings would appear at any time through the forest.

Wow! Such a warm day for February! Had to make the most if it, so tennis it was! Shorts.. T-shirt.. Lovely :D And this is my racket, the Head Microgel Prestige Mid. Took me a while to decide on this, but I do love it :)

Excuse the grain. & yes, ladies & gentlemen, I know I have a massive ass.
For some completely messed up reason I woke up before 7am this morning && I couldn't sleep for ages. When I woke up I read the paper & made lunch while texting Hannah deciding what we were going to do today.
I walked up to town - IN THE RAIN - & met Hannah while she ran some errands for her mum. Then we went back to her house & spent ages looking through cookery books before deciding to make butterfly cakes. After all that we ate butterfly cakes while watching TV with her dad & then we walked back to school while she walked Chester who seemed determined to trip me up.
My Benny had to be taken to the vets today for an x-ray because they thought that he had a piece of grass up his nose (he didn't) so because he had been sedated we were told we weren't allowed to let him out in case he collapsed somewhere. Now, for WEEKS I have been telling my parents that I hate them leaving the doors open all over the house because it makes me freezing, but they keep doing it and BENNY ESCAPED & WE CAN'T FIND HIM ANYWHERE. I love that kitty so much. He is my baby && I'm so worried for him.
So then in the evening I ate dinner with my parents (potato skins) while my brother was out at his running club, & then I watched The Little Mermaid, went outside to take photos.
I originally tried this fairy wings photo because I want to do a series with them, but it was too dark & the flash ruined it & without the flash it was too grainy. My Mom helped me take some of the fairy wing photos but it started raining so she went inside & I stayed out. My wings are now drying by the boiler. As a last resort I went & lay across our freezers.
&& then I came inside & watched TV while trying to fix this photo. Not as grainy as it originally was. The other one I took was worse.
& MY PARENTS JUST TOLD ME BENNY'S BACK.
Okay, he was totally soaked, && I towel dried him & he purred loudly & happily & then I had a long conversation with my parents in the kitchen where we discussed my birthday.
My last three birthdays haven't been great really, so I'm not bothering to celebrate them in anyway, but my Dad said ages ago that I should go out for dinner with my family so tonight my Dad said we could go anywhere I wanted, but THEN my Mom says that actually my brother has an exam the next day so we can't go out. FFS. That's not fair. They told me I could go out for lunch. Sunday lunch. Oh joy. && then they said maybe Saturday night, oh wait, no, they have a function to go to, & there is no damn way I'm going out on Friday night. Seriously. I hate birthdays. They are always so shit. Ugh. I'm feeling down now. & angry. My brother has been getting so much support for his exams from my parents (which I never got) so if we are going to go out as a family he can damn well miss out on one night of revision.
AAARGH.
I guess I'd say the same if I was my brother, but the thing is my brother doesn't even really care about revising.
Anyway, I'M GETTING MY HAIR DONE TOMORROW. YAY!!!
I need sleep. I have Eucharist tomorrow. I sing well in practises, but never as well in public. Which sucks. && then I'm going with Hannah & my Mom to get my hair done & buy presents for teachers for all the extra help they've given me. & then I have a choir concert in the evening.
Buenas Noches. (I wish more of my friends spoke Spanish because it's much easier to text in Spanish than in English.)

Snow Geese deciding to vacate the field, very quickly, around 1:00 p.m.. As happened at 9:30 a.m. when they vacated the water, it was an eagle (see comments for indifferent photo). I was a lot closer to them this time than when they were on the water, and with the sun instead of fog, it's an entirely different scene. I did get a photo of the eagle this time, not a great one but it does provide an image. This is a first year bird from its coloring. Like at 9:30, it did not seem to capture anything on that pass. (That bird was lighter underneath so probably 2nd or 3rd year bird). Of course, in both cases, the eagle might just have wanted to "make them go."

Did you ever have trouble deciding whether you preferred the BW or color version of a photo? So much for a decisive moment...
Preliminary research says it is a Sky King pedal powered 'car'. Have yet to find a specific date for this one, although I have found several that appear silver/chrome. Fascinating find at the County Line Gas and Oil Swap Meet.
Sometimes you decide to make an image of a region of the sky and it just comes out exactly as you had hoped for. This was one of these moments for me. I decided a while back to image the Gamma Cygni Nebula around the star Sadr in the constellation of Cygnus. I knew this was a very interesting region in the sky and I started with gathering H-alpha data for a monochrome 3-panel mosaic as weather in the Netherlands doesn't permit extended imaging projects most of the time. But somehow we had a very good weather period and I was able to image this region during 6 nights in a 9 day period which is quite unique.
When I noticed the weather forecasts I decided that I wanted to go for a color version of the image in a narrowband Hubble palette. So I just imaged one object during these six nights, but I'm so happy I did that :) The combination came out very nicely and really showed me the details that I wanted to get out of the image.
With an apparent visual magnitude of +2.23, Sadr (Gamma Cyg) is among the brighter stars visible in the night sky. Parallax measurements give a distance estimate of 1,800 light years (560 parsecs), with a 15% margin of error. The stellar classification of this star is F8 Iab, indicating that it has reached the supergiant stage of its stellar evolution. Since 1943, the spectrum of this star has served as one of the stable anchor points by which other stars are classified.
Compared to the Sun this is an enormous star, with 12 times the Sun's mass and about 150 times the Sun's radius. It is emitting over 33,000 times as much energy as the Sun, at an effective temperature of 6,100 K in its outer envelope. This temperature is what gives the star the characteristic yellow-white hue of an F-type star. Massive stars such as this consume their nuclear fuel much more rapidly than the Sun, so the estimated age of this star is only about 12 million years old.
The spectrum of this star shows some unusual dynamic features, including variations in radial velocity of up to 2 km/s, occurring on a time scale of 100 days or more. Indeed, on the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram, Gamma Cygni lies close to the instability strip and its spectrum is markedly like that of a Cepheid variable. This star is surrounded by a diffuse nebula called IC1318, or the Gamma Cygni region. [source: wikipedia]
The field of view spans over 3 degrees (six Full Moons) on the sky and includes emission nebula IC 1318 and open star cluster NGC 6910. Right of Gamma Cyg and shaped like two glowing cosmic wings divided by a long dark dust lane, IC 1318's popular name is understandably the Butterfly Nebula. Below and right of Gamma Cyg, are the young, still tightly grouped stars of NGC 6910. Some distance estimates for Gamma Cyg place it at around 1,800 light-years while estimates for IC 1318 and NGC 6910 range from 2,000 to 5,000 light-years. [source: APOD]

H-alpha: 56x900s (14h)

Stefania Iurilli, here during a break while deciding with me the evaluations for the students after an examination. Stefania actually is attending the Ph.D. in our Faculty, for me she has been a student, an assistent, a collegue, a friend. She is capable to work as much as me, maybe even more the only problem is that sometimes people in the Faculty don't understand she is a professor and not a student...
Original shots taken with a Polaroid Vision (Captiva) on an expired filmpack 500 (use before september 2005).
The Faculty at work. A little portraits collection of people trying to give their real contribution to studends, some of them with little precious efforts, other with their whole day, small or big their work may be successful or not, but they will keep on trying, often with no other rewards then their own pride.
This is only the first part of the series, other people portrait next...

I do not want to say what I saw and so leave such images to be found. This is your choice and chance to view and to decide what you see. Surely there is an App for Nephelomancy? If not then we are on own using the symbol structure we have in place and ready for use.
I offered no idea of what I could see when I posted the film version to the internet. I still do not wish to influence what anyone else can see. In no particular order I would like to just leave these here.

Nephomancy and Nephelomancy from the web
Nephelomancy Shirleytwofeathers.com link below
Nephomancy or Nephelomancy is divination by studying clouds. This involves observing and interpreting the color, shape and position of clouds in the sky. The Celtic Druids made extensive use of nephomancy, which they called neladoracht.
Celtic shamans sometimes practiced a form of Nephomancy that was closely related to Hydromancy and Scrying. After finding a hollowed stone or other depression that was filled with rain water, priests would look into it studying the cloud formations reflected on the water’s surface.
To practice Nephomancy today, one should ask specific questions and then observe the shape and disposition of the clouds. This is easy enough to do in most parts of the world and requires only a basic understanding of the forces involved.

The real Santa lived a long time ago in a place called Asia Minor. It is now the country of Turkey. His name was Nicholas.
Nicholas' parents died when he was just a teenager. His parents left him a lot of money which made him a rich young man. He went to live with his uncle who was a priest.
Nicholas heard about a man who had lost all his money. He had three daughters who were old enough to get married. But in those days young women had to have money in order to get married. This money was a "dowry" and it was used to help the new family get started. If you didn't have dowry money, you didn't get married.
This family was so poor they had nothing left to eat. The daughters were going to be sold as slaves because they couldn't live at home any longer. They were very sad. They wouldn't be able to have families of their own. And they would have to be slaves—no longer able to decide where they would live or what they would do.
The night before the oldest daughter was to be sold, she washed her stockings and put them in front of the fire to dry. Then all of them went to sleep—the father and the three daughters.
In the morning the daughter saw a lump in her stocking. Reaching in, she found a small, heavy bag. It had gold inside! Enough to provide food for the family and money for her dowry. Oh, how happy they were!
The next morning, another bag with gold was found. Imagine! Two of the daughters would now be saved. Such joy!
And the next night, the father planned to stay awake to find out who was helping his daughters. He dozed off, but heard a small "clink" as another bag landed in the room. Quickly he jumped up and ran out the door. Who did he catch ducking around the corner?
Nicholas, the young man who lived with his uncle. "Nicholas, it is you! Thank you for helping us—I hardly know what to say!" Nicholas said, "Please, do not thank me—thank God that your prayers have been answered. Do not tell others about me."
Nicholas continued helping people. He always tried to help secretly. He didn't want any attention or thanks. Years passed and he was chosen to be a bishop. Bishops look after their people as shepherds look after their sheep. And that is what Nicholas did. When there wasn't any food, he found wheat; so no one went hungry. He always helped people in trouble. All his life Nicholas showed people how to love God and care for each other.
Everyone loved Nicholas. After he died, they told stories of the good and kind things Nicholas had done. Sailors took these stories about Nicholas everywhere they went. Some of the stories were about his special care for children—helping and protecting them when danger threatened. And so more and more people learned about good, kind Nicholas. They wanted to be like him. He is an example of how we should live. And that is why he became a saint.
This is the story of the real Santa Claus, St. Nicholas. To this day people say that St. Nicholas, or Santa, is the special friend of children.
