Deception Point @ The Anchor - Fullerton, CA 02/04/12

Deception Creek crashes over a third right-angle drop and this time of year it has a huge volume, speed and force. The five kayakers I described in the previous image decide to bypass this rapids too.

WA Hwy 20 over the pass in Deception Pass State Park.

A group of sailors led by Joseph Whidbey, part of the Vancouver Expedition, found and mapped Deception Pass on June 7, 1792. George Vancouver gave it the name "Deception" because it had misled him into thinking Whidbey Island was a peninsula. The "deception" was heightened due to Whidbey's failure to find the strait at first.

Deception Pass is a strait separating Whidbey Island from Fidalgo Island, in the northwest part of the U.S. state of Washington. It connects Skagit Bay, part of Puget Sound, with the Strait of Juan de Fuca. A pair of bridges known collectively as Deception Pass Bridge cross Deception Pass, and the bridges are on the National Register of Historic Places. 2010

On Deception Island, an active volcano with a large flooded crater that ships can sail into.

As seen from our favorite ride and with our favorite captains on the Island Whaler @DeceptionPassWA.

Another one of those unintended pull offs along HWY 2 in Washington. Glad we stopped. It was a really pretty area. The cascades at the bottom of the falls were actually more interesting than the falls themselves. I believe this is still part of the Skykomish River.

Weekend at Deception Pass

Neptunes Bellows de toegang tot de krater. IJs, lava, stenen markeren de doorgang.

I would usually photograph these falls with a slow shutter speed, however, I decided to capture the mighty spring runoff with a faster shutter to freeze the action. I certainly would not want to fall in!!

Christopher Reich signing "Rules of Deception" at Warwick's - July 15, 2008

What an amazing place! Much of Puget Sound's tidal movement exchanges with the Strait of Juan de Fuca through this 100m notch four times daily. Thousands of cubic meters of water say hello and goodbye to this scenic gem with every passing moment. Just something to give you perspective, no swimming!

Deception Pass bridge from Ben Ure Island

Named by Captain George Vancouver 10 June 1792. Feeling that he had been "DECEIVED" as to the nature of the inner waterway, PORT GARDNER (Now Saratoga Passage). He wrote on his chart "DECEPTION PASS." He honored master Joseph Whidbey, who found the passage while commanding a small boat crew of explorers by naming the island "WHIDBEY."
