Colourful creatures buzz around under the cloak of prettiness and then they inch closer towards you, before you know it they are eating your face.

A Pacific Madrone and the Deception Pass bridge (under construction). I don't think it is until my third or fourth visit somewhere that I usually hit my groove. A recent trip up to this far corner of the U.S. gave me further opportunity to explore this area in more depth. I fully intend to get images of this bridge at night at some point in order to add it to my Bridgetown collection but for now I have been content to explore around Deception Pass during the day and continue to get a feel for all of it. This past trip took us out onto a small point of land with this pleasant view across the bay at the Deception Pass bridge, but I think it was all the nearby Madrone trees that most fully caught my imagination. They are truly crazy looking trees and I spent many minutes standing there pondering them.

One of the many new towers in London. It makes me think how impressive the original Tower of London must have been for anyone making their way into London up the Thames to see the castle dominate the view.

Looking up at the Deception Pass Bridge from the Juan de Fuca side, on the water.

"Deception Pass is a strait separating Whidbey Island from Fidalgo Island, in the northwest part of the U.S. state of Washington. It connects Skagit Bay, part of Puget Sound, with the Strait of Juan de Fuca. A pair of bridges known collectively as Deception Pass Bridge cross Deception Pass, and the bridges are on the National Register of Historic Places….Deception Pass is a dramatic seascape where the tidal flow and whirlpools beneath the twin bridges connecting Fidalgo Island to Whidbey Island move quickly. During ebb and flood tide current speed reaches about 8 knots (9.2 mph), flowing in opposite directions between ebb and flood. This swift current can lead to standing waves, large whirlpools, and roiling eddies. This swift current phenomenon can be viewed from the twin bridges' pedestrian walkways or from the trail leading below the larger south bridge from the parking lot on the Whidbey Island side. Boats can be seen waiting on either side of the pass for the current to stop or change direction before going through. Thrill-seeking kayakers go there during large tide changes to surf the standing waves and brave the class 2 and 3 rapid conditions." (Wikipedia)

A great location is this waterfalls in Washington known as Deception falls. Several short trails lead down river to some photographic opportunities.

Deception Pass Bridge in the distance, joining Fildago and Whidbey Islands.

I got away for an long weekend on Whidbey Island last week in order to teach a class in Coupeville. I was born in Seattle and have lived my whole life in the Pacific Northwest yet I had never been any farther south on Whidbey Island than Deception Pass. I enjoyed the island quite a bit and was left with the distinct impression of how much was still left to see despite how much we managed to see.

This stop at Deception Pass though was one of our first stops and one of the places I wanted to see again the most. I still have the bridge on my list of bridges to visit at night and photograph, but that did not happen this time around. On this day the beaches of Deception Pass were fairly full of fishermen and women as the salmon spawn was in effect. So I made a few images, both with pinhole and Flexbody of the stretch of beach with their clumps of fisherfolk.

Deception Island is an island in South Shetland off the Antarctic Peninsula, which has one of the safest harbours in Antarctica. The island is the caldera of an active volcano, which caused serious damage to the local scientific stations in 1967 and 1969. The island previously held a whaling station; it is now a tourist destination and scientific outpost, with research bases being run by Argentina and Spain. Various countries have previously asserted sovereignty, but it is now administered under the Antarctic Treaty System.

This was probably my favorite angle I got of the bridge at Deception Pass.. This is a composition of 3 images. The first image I posted of this bridge is here.
