Deception Island has a history of human occupation dating from 1911 when a whaling station was established in Whalers Bay by "Hvalfangerselskabet Hector A/S" of Norway. It closed in 1931 because of a slump in whale oil prices.
On 3rd February 1944, a British base (Base B) was established on Deception Island by the Royal Navy during "Operation Tabarin" using three of the abandoned whaling station buildings. In 1945, "Operation Tabarin" terminated and the base was handed over to the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), the forerunner of the British Antarctic Survey, and became a scientific research station. In 1946 the main accommodation building used by FIDS burnt down.
The main activities carried out at Base B were meteorology and the operation of an air facility to support survey work and the other British bases in the Antarctic Peninsula region. An aircraft hanger was built in 1961 and a new accommodation and laboratory block in 1965.
The base was occupied continuously from 1944 to December 1967 when it was evacuated because of a volcanic eruption. It reopened in December 1968, but finally had to be closed on 23rd February 1969 following another eruption. This resulted in a mud-flow destroying most of the buildings. This mud-flow dramatically changed the topography and coastline of Whalers Bay, and also engulfed the whaler's graveyard, in which A. H. Farrant, who died on 17th November 1953 whilst serving with FIDS was buried.
Much of the abandoned British research base and the Norwegian whaling station remains today. The main group of buidings stretch over 350 m in the centre of Whalers Bay; the British hanger is sited a further 300 metres to the west. Around the east side of the bay are various relics of the whaling operations, including water boats, timber barrels and large quantities of whalebone.
During the 1990-91 and the 1991-92 seasons clean-up operations were undertaken at Base B by the British Antarctic Survey. All remaining fuel, batteries, and hazardous wastes, as well as large quantity of general debris were removed. Further clean-up of the area is planned.
It is not intended that the abandoned buidings at Deception Island will be removed. This is for two reasons. First, the mudflow is now regarded as being of international geological importance, and the remains of the buildings a demonstration of the power of volcanic eruptions. Second, in 1995 the whaling station was designated as Historic Site and Monument No. 71 under the Antarctic Treaty.

I love living in the NW and having access to all these lovely waterfalls. I have always been curious about this waterfall because I have driven passed it many times to and from the western Washington. It's worth seeing as it is just a short distance from the parking lot.
The day after Halloween we went up to the mountains. Tried to stroll the Deception Falls Nature Trail, but..it was closed! I don't understand why they need to gate it off with big CLOSED and NO PARKING signs. Sure, lock the bathrooms for the winter. It'll all be under a bunch of snow sooner or later. Why the big gates? So anyway, instead we strolled the Deception Creek trail up to the log bridge.

The Deception Pass Bridge is a two-lane bridge on Washington State Route 20 connecting Whidbey Island to Fidalgo Island in the U.S. state of Washington. It was a Washington State Highways project, and included project elements built by young workers from the Civilian Conservation Corps. Completion of the bridge was a factor in the decision to build Naval Air Station Whidbey Island and helped Oak Harbor, Washington flourish. The bridge is a commonly-photographed landmark of the Puget Sound region.

Deception Bay is a suburb north of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Its Local Government Area is the Moreton Bay Region and is located approximately 32 km north of Brisbane in the south-eastern corner of the bay of the same name which separates the Redcliffe peninsula and Bribie Island.
Deception Bay was named in 1823 by Lt John Oxley, who thought the bay was a river and because of his mistake and the shallowness, named it Pumice Stone River; he later changed the name to Deception Bay.
How bad of shape is America in? Our grandfathers and fathers fought against fascism, socialism and communism. How many have died in these battles? One can only imagine the number of men and women who have died and the many millions of victims slaughtered by these regimes. We have become so removed from the truth, brainwashed by progressivism, that we have shamed our fathers by forgetting what has transpired in the last century. It has culminated with a cabinet of czars; socialists, communists and terrorists who have come to power. People who held their thoughts were our common enemies! We have been bombarded with so many lies that we have forgone our values and settled for a veiled attempt of the truth. Our values are skewed, our history revised and our children left with no hope. Dissolutioned youth, retirees and people angry with the Republican Party, acted together to accept a pact with the devil himself. He projected hope and change. And, as satan himself, came as an angel of light. He seduced the masses, promising things that no one man could produce. He entangled us with a yoke of bondage that will enslave our grandchildren and future generations to come. He has preached class envy, racism and told outright lies! How could the Chamber of Commerce be demonized by a president? Mr. Obama has stooped to all time lows with the villianization of concerned people like members of the Tea Party. News releases and video clips clearly show the difference between the peaceful gathering of the conservative masses and the rabble rousing trash recruited by organizers like our President. You have a choice in the upcoming election to help curb the onslaught of progressives, socialists, communists and liberals by electing conservative people with conservative values. We need people who are not against the small businessmen and women of America. We need people who won't raise taxes but promote business. If rich people don't invest in our country, where will they invest? Since when is it a crime to be rich? For those who have made their riches illegally, may they be held accountable.
Look at the picture above and have a good laugh, I did. He is not a cartoon character. He is real. He is a threat to our country! He is a threat to our civilization as we know it. He and the men who support him will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. Only knowledge and the truth will stop them. Register to vote and choose between a welfare society and a working society where all men and women are equal.

This bridge connects the mainland to Whidbey Island. As I was driving to Oak Harbor (Scott says it's pronounced Oh-Carbor) today to visit a client, I stopped off to snap a few shots.

The bridge, one of the scenic wonders of the Pacific Northwest, is actually two spans, one over Canoe Pass to the north, and another over Deception Pass to the south. Construction began in August 1934, and the completed bridge was dedicated at noon on July 31, 1935. The Wallace Bridge and Structural Co. of Seattle, Washington provided 460 tons of steel for the 511-foot Canoe Pass arch and 1130 tons for the 976-foot Deception Pass span. The cost of the New Deal-era construction was $482,000, made possible through the Public Works Administration and county funds.
In 1982, the bridge was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
It cost more to paint the spans in 1983 than to build them in 1935. They were painted again in 1997.
Deception Island was a whaling station until 1931. The structures remain decaying on the actively volcanic island.
