Fénykövi Elephant at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in Washington, DC.

The rogue male African bush elephant, Loxodonta africana, that is the centerpiece of the rotunda has long been a symbol of the museum. It was unveiled in 1959, and at that time was the world’s largest land mammal on display in a museum. The hide, weighing two tons, was donated to the Smithsonian by the Hungarian big-game hunter Josef J. Fénykövi. Fénykövi tracked the elephant in the Cuando River region of southeastern Angola in November 1955. He wrote about the hunt for Sports Illustrated.

For years, I have been a fan of the band AC%DC. After my run today on 24M, I am now a fan of DC%AC.

It is the ungodly hour of 5:15 eastern in the Windy City. A pretty hard downpour has now turned into a soft shower, enabling this quick, non tripod, grab shot at Park Manor yard. We have tied onto our first track and wait in the clear for train 26W to depart off of track 3. Once they are clear, we will double to strip track 8 and hang the marker.

My trailing unit today is newer tier Gevo 3669. Of all of the 2 unit consists that I have run, I can say without exception that today's was probably the best yet. The power and dynamic brake capabilities of these locomotives is incredible. Train handling is so much easier with these high adhesion units. I honed my engineering skills on standard cab units, mainly SD40-2s, SD50/60s, and various Dash 7 Series engines. The dynamic on most of these units were decent, but no where near the power of locomotives riding the rails today.

One of my least favorite units to have in the lead were the NS standard cab Dash9s. While the air conditioner on these engines would freeze out a polar bear, they were like working in a cave. My hat goes off to the men and women involved in this rebuild program. The new AC44C6Ms are an absolute joy to operate.

To somewhat quote a great AC%DC tune: "For those about to rebuild, we salute you!"

On May 24, the Brookings Institution convened an expert panel to discuss the trajectory of trans-Atlantic relations; whether the allies can bridge the gaps that divide them; how important Europe, and particularly the European Union, is to the Trump administration; and whether European states can and will fend for themselves.

The discussion featured Brookings’s Robert Bosch Senior Fellows Amanda Sloat and Constanze Stelzenmüller, Célia Belin, visiting fellow in the Center on the United States and Europe at Brookings, and Kenneth R. Weinstein, president and CEO of Hudson Institute. Edward Luce, Washington columnist and commentator for the Financial Times, will moderate the discussion.

This discussion is part of the Brookings – Robert Bosch Foundation Transatlantic Initiative, which aims to build up and expand resilient networks and trans-Atlantic activities to analyze and work on issues concerning trans-Atlantic relations and social cohesion in Europe and the United States.

The Washington Memorial. Can’t go up in now. Last year DC experienced an earthquake. Inspectors, after a full inspection and a subsequent stidy of the analysis, gave the monument a clean structural bill of health. However, the elevator started malfunctioning. They would fix it and it would break again. So now they are doing@what they should have done to start with and are replacing it. They waste money of frivoulus studys but skimp on safety. Figures.

A Fisher-Price vs. Playskool checklist* poster of comic book super heroes and villains! And Fisher-Price is totally winning, as they've put out about twice as many DC characters as Playskool has Marvel characters.

* This isn't a completest poster, since half or more of these characters have multiple variations. Heck, I think there are 20 versions of Batman alone!
